The Four Tracks thread got me thinking...

Would you play a record you hate if someone requested you for it?

I would love to own a copy of the Four Tracks... cos I think 'Voo Doo Man' is a cracker of a record.

I can't stand 'Like My Love For You'... but seeings as you can't have one without the other.. it's in your play box.

Would you stick it on if you were asked... even though you hate it?

I haven't got a clue what I'd do... so maybe I'm gonna pass on getting one... just so's I don't have to decide!

If you dont play what the punters want at an event, isnt that playing records for yourself ? Bit of a "I WILL ONLY PLAY WHAT I LIKE" scenario.

Does'nt that defeat the object of Djing?

........Suprised if promoters let you do this........ where do you play where no one comes and asks you for a record in your spot ?

Bit of a double edged sword this one, as promoters do we not ask dj`s to guest to play there own style of music, of course i understand the view of dj`s are paid to entertain, but for me i allways reply when asked by guests what shall i play? just play your spot thats what i personally want from a guest dj, and leave it up to them to make there own decisions on what to play

I,ve had a re-think on your question Kirsty.......and it should,nt matter what it is they,ve chosen to play in their set!! It is a request after all and if they told you they.ll play it then they should!! If i was requested the snake it certainly would,nt flow into my set i hate it with a passion  but i would play it  I would play a request so much so that i actually bought a record for someone cos she said she never hears it played out. I had a very similar scenario once when DJing for Neil and Jayne at Bury I had in my box the Deletts - "Look At Me" which I love but had a request for the flip "What's the Use" which I like. As the requestee was a regular I obliged to find he was almost the only one that danced. Mind you it did get a better reaction than Dee Dee Barnes which I played in the same spot

Well put Harry and my thoughts too

I was always of the understanding a promotor books a guest to deliver something a little different.

Its up to the promotor to do the research and book guests who will compliment there venue, but add something a bit different from the norm.

For example why pay for someone to travel half way across the country to play records that most local dj's have in their playbox??

When the guy's at the CUMBY ARMS booked guest dj's they always brought in special dj's that they knew would add the wow factor to the night, but most importantly played records that suited their own ideal's .

Like Kirsty said ,what if that record does'nt fit or blend with what the guest dj is playing on the night.

Surely it's also the responsibility of the resident dj's to fulfill requests ,after all it is they who know who comes into the venue, and what they are accustomed to??

I still think its out of order for dj's to be abrupt with people, and should be polite enough to say they havent got it,don't have it etc, etc.

I also remember reading Harry's post on "events lookback" YORKSOULTRAIN.

Harry and Di take it in turns to play the "rare set" or the "Regular set" ,which shows they have an understanding to try and please everyone at some point throughout the night!

Thinking of running a Rnb night ,has anyone got SOULSAMS phone number please

Sorry if i've gone off on a tangent with this, but don't think i'm the only one

I only asked as I usually request floor-clearers

As a Dj shouldn't your job be keeping the floor and the majority of the punters happy (unless I'm there and then the job is to keep me happy  ). If in an hours spot you got asked for 15 really diverse requests, what would you do? Play them and end up with a probably mediocre spot - or ignore the majority and play a set that flows in which you can include the records that you are known for playing?

Personally I'm glad I have no desire to Dj. I'm pretty adept at saying NO though...

And good on you for having the bottle to play it too!... I'd rather see a DJ 'be brave' with just a few on the floor dancing to that track, than not having the bottle to play it because it was't a certainty to fill the floor. (If you know what i mean)..

We need Dj's who'll do that or it'd be impossible to put on a balanced night. I love the idea of having Dj's on who aren't scared to play something different... and the idea of offering a balanced night musically too.

I think you should come and do it again infact. (will pm ya!).

Ok if asked for so many requests  and saying i had them to play.... i would obviously wanna see the dancefloor busy!! Cos as a dancer myself thats what i would want too. So i would play the requests that would do just that........but apologise at the end of my set........by just saying sorry if i did not get to play your request. To me an apology is better than nought at all.

On the topic - the scenario that Joan describes is the only way I'd own a record that I hate. And no I wouldn't play it, I'd politely say that I wasn't too keen on it (well, polite as long as they were ).. but I think there's a difference between record collectors who also DJ, where their set tends to be an expression of their personal style, and purely DJs who want to please the crowd. Both have their place but in my eyes - or should that be ears - the art of a good DJ is one who does both. Personally, I rarely ask for requests and would only do so if it was something that I knew the DJ did play during their sets - have heard some people ask for things which are completely incongruous to that DJs style... and I've heard some awful disjointed sets where the DJ was trying to please everyone who asked for something - they'd have been just as well with a jukebox!

Joan - you could always say that side's badly scratched...

Hi JB

Why ,if you hate "the snake" with a passion do you still have it in your playbox??

We do not know each other but im guessing you are also a promotor ,not just a dj??

This would explain your way of thinking because you have to bend over backwards,so to speak,to keep your punters happy in order to protect your venue.

I personally hate to see a "big name dj" turn up ,who i know has great records ,that i may never ever have ,only to play regular choons that ,like i said ,every local Tom ,Dick &Harry plays every week.

Sorry but that's why i go to see these guy's!

Ok theres more to it than just putting records on ,you might say??

Good with a microphone....gets the crowd going etc.,well why not just ask him to turn up without his records and play from the residents box allnight!

By the way i also happen to like LMLFY but would love for Joan to give the Voodoo Man a chance ,because if i was a promotor i would have faith in Joan to deliver, never seen/heard her play a bad set yet ,and that is really what it's about .Having faith in someone's ability to produce something a bit differnent ,who knows ,maybe even something special .

That's what makes for memorable soul nights imho

because you like one side of it, but hate the other - maybe the one that's better known, as described in the original post.

This would apply to me with Troy Dodds. I play 'the real thing' but wouldn't play 'try my love' under any circumstances, I know it's well liked sorry, just not by me. Same with Tobi Lark 'sweep it out' and Little Nicky soul 'i wanted top tell you'...I would never play the sides that first got these records attention.

I tend to only ask for requests when I'm pretty sure that dj usually plays it or has done before when I've heard one of his/her sets. I often find that badgering a dj will make them play a record in the end...either that or asking all your friends to go up and ask for the same record. Did that very successfully to Keith Money at prestatyn a few years ago....he definitely wasn't playing a particular record....four or five requests in five minutes later and Clydene Jackson's dulcit tones sent the main room oldie worshippers back to their seats for a breather and a change of vest  Result :lol:

Although maybe it wouldn't have happened if I'd asked for Dobie Gray

Suppose its up to promotors to do there homework and book the dj`s that they think is right for there venue, also knowing there crowd and knowing what they want, in my experience most of the people who want to hear different music are the sit down and listen type anyway, and at local venues giving everybody what they want has allways been the best way for me, nowadays at local soul nights there is a warming up period anyway before they venture onto the dancefloor wich gives the dj`s to play something different, or maybe its dutch courage :lol::lol:

A couple of years ago at The Orwell in Wigan when the guy's had the Northern room going upstairs and I'm sure Kirsty will remember this although in jest I'm sure she shouted to me as I went upstairs something along the lines of 'Mark gonna play the same records you've been playing for the past fifteen years then?'............ laughed it off at the time but never a truer sentence spoken to me, recently I have declined and cancelled a number of DJ bookings for several reasons which I won't go into as some are not connected with the Northern scene at all more to do with personal and business stuff, but to be honest I'm bored with the whole DJ deal and process, Kirsty was right to a degree as because you might have a half decent box of top tunes in time it can get a little predictable and I simply started going through the motions, Bobby Kline, Four Tracks, Cashmeres, Majestics, Elbie Parker, Troy Dodds, Jimmy Burns etc. etc. almost like DJ'ing by numbers and because you think that these records and others need to be played as I always applied the give it the best you think you got type of ethic I've basically hit a brick wall, the funny thing is I still have access to some blinding records which are not so over exsposed and do channel these on the radio show, the other side of the coin is many venues do not want or allow change or different records so it's somewhat of a catch 22 situation in many cases, I must say I feel as free as a bird to collect and enjoy what I want now and it's a joy, best music in the world if you can do your own thing.

I go to events to hear dj's I respect and I WANT to hear what they want play. If I went to hear what I wanted, I might as well stay at home and bore myself to death. The whole point of going to an event, is to be suprised, inspired and excited. How can i do that within my own, limited and predjudiced confines? How will i discover new tunes? When I first went to nighters in 76, I didn't know anything and heard new stuff EVERY WEEK...thats why i went. Thats the POINT of hearing a dj and trusting him/her to play from the 'heart and soul'....not from a top 500. :D
