Epic Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 Would love to see a list from a year earlier - think the tunes would have been a tad better than Tommy Hunt- Flower Shoppe - Biddu etc.
Ian Dewhirst Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 Nah, certainly wasn't Wigan at it's height by that point. Too much Soussan Mirwood stuff in there, made for the scene stuff like Tommy Hunt and serious dodgies like Biddu, Flower Shoppe etc. I was always biased towards Richard in terms of what he played to be honest and I'm not sure if this really reflects too much of Richard's taste here LOL.... Probably made more for the promo dept @ Spark Records methinks........ Ian D
slimharpo Posted March 8, 2008 Author Posted March 8, 2008 2.....The Fidels on Keymen I thought that too but this it is the Key Men Strings according to RM. Didn't Soussan record an instrumental as this?
funkyfeet Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 As usual with the Casino, people forget what was actually played there and what were the BIG sounds.
Ian Dewhirst Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 I thought that too but this it is the Key Men Strings according to RM. Didn't Soussan record an instrumental as this? Never mind that, what's "The Notice" by the Fidels and "Spider Man" - Will Power? I don't seem to know either of 'em unless my brain's finally turned to mush LOL....... Ian D

Epic Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 As usual with the Casino, people forget what was actually played there and what were the BIG sounds. IMHO Wigan went pretty much downhill after 1975 - can remember Biddu etc. being played - they were just a taste of the shape of things to come.
Ian Dewhirst Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 HONEST ITS NOT A CU! THINK ITS ON A MAJOR USA LABEL Yeah right, Toad. And the check's in the mail etc, etc... Zed1 Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 (edited) IMHO Wigan went pretty much downhill after 1975 Yawn!!.... Why is it whenever anyone posts anything about Wigan on this board someone always has to throw in the same old-same old tired comment of ..."It stopped being a credible venue after.....(Insert the year of your Choice)" No where in the original post does it ask for an opinion of what year Wigan was Crap from!........ so why bother??... That dance floor at 4am when you could not get another person on it, and hardly room to move a step, condensation running down to walls, shivers up the back of your neck, then just imagine the intro to "A Little Bit Hurt" well if you weren't there its hard to explain!!!!!! and I've just got in from the pub. You can't say it was crap because in the main hall Richard Searling was on!!! Rose Valentine and the Sisters Three, Nomads, "Can't get over these memories" Tie.

Russ Vickers Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 ==== im not saying wigan was better than anywhere else BUT ive yet to see a Yate playlist that was BETTER than Wigan,,,of the ones ive seen they were pretty similar....almost identical .. come on someone prove me wrong. Mark, with the greatest respect, I went to both Wigan & Yate, probably spent more time at Wigan tho to be fair, but, even you must realise that a lot of things that were first played at Yate, travelled northwards & in the mists of time have become 'Wigan' plays. I dont think you can really compare the two venues, they were both brilliant in there own way & more to the point Yate was not trying to emulate Wigan, it had its own identity, with its own sounds, but back to the point, many original Yate plays from the likes of Ian Clark particularly went on to become Wigan classics. And for those people that suggest Wigan was crap after whatever date..........bollox, RS IMHO didnt really come into his own until 78/79, again my opinion, but this was RS golden era IMHO & lets not forget that RS later Wigan plays, were also spun by him at Stafford & other venues after Wigan closed. Im not really one for nostalgia with regards to past venues, because 'soul' life goes on, this play list is more of a promotional tool & not really a true reflection & as with all venues there are records played that are 'of the time' that dont look or sound as good X many years down the line. For Trev...........yes, get over Wigan agreed, but without a doubt Wigan was special in every way, warts & all & shouldnt be trivialised when reflecting on the history of NS. There have been venues past & present that have been musically as good, but nothing could compare to a Wigan Casino Allnighter as a whole experience.........without sounding 'wet' as a youngster I was reduced to tears on more than one occasion as the final tunes were played...........it was a truly, truly awesome venue, yes, its in the past so lets not harp on about it constantly & I for one am a great beleiver in a progressive NSS that constantly evolves musically, but I think we should treat the venue with the respect that it deserves in NS history. Lecture over. Russ Russ

SteveM Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 As usual with the Casino, people forget what was actually played there and what were the BIG sounds. Exactly. I would have thought that at that time as well, Winstanleys input into that top twenty would have been greater than RS's. Which probably explains a few things.
