mischief Posted March 2, 2008 Author Posted March 2, 2008 mischief you watch smokin joe don't come calling round Steve him and his mate Casiys Clay.. maybe should have a thread famous people who released soul records
Prophonics 2029 Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 Good luck to him, I struggled for years to sell mine for £20 what I paid for it, think I took £15 in the end.
Kev Connellan Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 him and his mate Casiys Clay.. maybe should have a thread famous people who released soul records Ernie Terrell - I can't wait [Argo] also a boxer
Missing Link Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 Ernie Terrell - I can't wait [Argo] also a boxer Interestingly Ernie Terrell was the WBA World Heavyweight Champion in 1965/66 and is the elder brother of Jean Terrell of the Supremes.
paup-ine Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 him and his mate Casiys Clay.. maybe should have a thread famous people who released soul records Was Joe Frazier the boxer Joe Frazier then?
SteveM Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 Interestingly Ernie Terrell was the WBA World Heavyweight Champion in 1965/66 and is the elder brother of Jean Terrell of the Supremes. Lost it to Ali in the infamous "Uncle Tom" fight after Terrell called him "Clay"
paup-ine Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 Yep. Oh I didnt know that all the years I had the record!!
michael-j Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 a couple of other soulful sportsmen - Rosey Grier (American football), Arthur Lee Maye (baseball), and plenty of ex-boxers in music - Jackie Wilson, Lee Dorsey, Champion Jack Dupree, Prince Buster, probably hundreds
Steve G Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 Oh I didnt know that all the years I had the record!! Never put together the title and the artist then?
Jordirip Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 Never put together the title and the artist then? You can't always tell Steve, I got a nice 45 by Joe Brown this weekend and it sure wasn't the cheeky cockney with the Bruvvers. Jordi
Hold Tight Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 Saw Smokin Joe last year in November just before the 1st anniversary do we held at the venue. Apparently he comes and stays there when he is attending boxing galas in the area. small world really.
Missing Link Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 Was Joe Frazier the boxer Joe Frazier then? If I'm not mistaken it was a remake of a version by New Censation on Pride, written and produced by Van McCoy.
Harry Crosby Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 Was Joe Frazier the boxer Joe Frazier then? No offence, but might have been a strange title for a record, if he wasn`t
Missing Link Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 Lost it to Ali in the infamous "Uncle Tom" fight after Terrell called him "Clay" It was the first time that the World Heavyweight title had been split between the WBC and WBA. Muhammad Ali was stripped of the title because he had evaded the draft to go to Vietnam. Ernie Terrell refused to call him by his adopted Muslim name in an effort to force a showdown and when the contest finally happened it was a one-sided affair. For 15 rounds Ali taunted him saying "What's My Name" and utterly outboxed him. Cassius Clay (as he was then) recorded a version of Ben E. King's 'Stand By Me'.
michael-j Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 Cassius Clay (as he was then) recorded a version of Ben E. King's 'Stand By Me'. and later on, the classic Ali and his Gang Vs Tooth Decay LP
ChrisOD1964 Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 and later on, the classic Ali and his Gang Vs Tooth Decay LP fangs for that will look into that when i get back from the dentist
Guest Buey Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 Sod all the Boxing - Have you seen the price of the Travel Iron he's got up for grabs!!!
Steve G Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 You can't always tell Steve, I got a nice 45 by Joe Brown this weekend and it sure wasn't the cheeky cockney with the Bruvvers. Jordi Yeah right on Jordi! And I got one by the Pretenders but it sure wasn't Chrissie Hind on lead vocals
paup-ine Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 (edited) No offence, but might have been a strange title for a record, if he wasn`t Yeh, i suppose it was a bit 'derrr' of me! Edited March 3, 2008 by paup-ine

Ali kept him on his feet for the duration of the fight, to punish and humiliate Terrell. Floyd Patterson had similar treatment for the same thing.
Guest moggy Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 Sold mine for £8 on ebay a couple of years back Anyone give me a valuation on a George Foreman Lean Mean Grilling Machine The Silver Labelled edition
Guest mrs norman maine Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 (edited) and later on, the classic Ali and his Gang Vs Tooth Decay LP During a very half-hearted record hunt in LA in 1993, I came within a cat's whisker's breadth of buying this. For the novelty value, you understand. Alas, common sense prevaled and I've always regretted it. But not as much as I regret passing up the chance to buy up an all-singing, all-dancing Andy Gibb figurine from an NYC record/junk shop the next year. Not very skilled at this record-buying lark, am I? Edited March 4, 2008 by mrs norman maine
Guest Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 (edited) Good luck to him, I struggled for years to sell mine for £20 what I paid for it, think I took £15 in the end. exactly what i took...couldnt beleive it myself when i saw it ...also another soulful boxer...one BERRY GORDY Edited March 4, 2008 by daz m
Blackpoolsoul Posted February 2, 2020 Posted February 2, 2020 Being relatively new to this site and late to the party, I found this image of the group I do wonder who the other siblings are besides Ernie and Jean.....does anyone know ?
Kenb Posted February 2, 2020 Posted February 2, 2020 I'm pretty sure this is...his brothers Leonard, and J.C. (they played guitar and base respectively), - and Rudy Alverez drummer (not family). They also went under the heading '...and his Swinging Heavyweights' 1
