Guest
anyone mentioned Troggs? Farnworth in Bolton . It had a couple of all - nighters before Va - Va opened . I went to the first one , but the atmosphere in the place was off putting and uncomfortable , and we left after a couple of hours . I am sure Dickie S was one of the DJs . There is an advert in an old B & S , which I will post if I can find it . Malc Burton Edited December 26, 2009 by Malc Burton Link to comment Social source share

Guest popcorn boy
Hi Kimbo, The Red House - that was the place! Can't remember if it was a regular niter or a one off though. From Moulton myself - when it was a village not a business park, then moved to Roade but it was to far to Wilby and the right side of Northampton, so left home at 16 and moved into the town, and later Corby for a short while. -Kev the allnighter at the Red House was halfway between Kettering and Northampton. there were two allnighters there that was my first allnighter.in November of 1969.Glenn Bellamy. Guest manusf3a
Have seen it mentioned as an all dayer but there was also a couple of all nighters at the central hall Kettering about 75 time.I see also that the corn exchange at cambridge was mentioned,I cant see them having had any more than one there because it was a fooking huge cavernous place the size of so it seems four wembleys put together, hardly conducive of a good atmosphere, how many folk would you need to fill a floor that size ,concrete if I remember. The kettering one pretty well attended if I recall correctly, Link to comment Social source share
Guest Droylsdonian
A foo years ago, I was clearing out me garage & came across a box with assorted shite in it, mainly old sports trophies, footy progs & photos, but there was also a membership card for a soul club at Burnden Park. I will still have it somewhere. Now, as me brain is addled, I can't remember much about it, like whether it was a niter or what, but I doubt it was. What bit I 'think' I recall is that it was in some 'suite' (function room) & that it was on a Sunday night (unusual) & that we used to get the Trans-Lancs Express bus from A-U-L bus station to get there. Davenpete
What a silly thread - there are half a dozen I can think of straight away that I went to, you'll just never get a full list given all the one offs etc. There's the White Heather at Wigton that me and Pete used to co-run with Dave and Danny and later Saus in the late 90s, that was resurrected recently for a bit. Pip used to put on new year allnighters in Carlisle. There was that one that Rob Marriot ran for a short while about 92 around Kettering somewhere. Ion's allnighter in London at LaScala and that club opposite the Sun offices. The Dolphin club or whatever it was called in Southampton. The RnB nighters Brian used to do at various venues round central Manchester (I DJed at em all but can't remember the venues). Dunstable. The modern allnighter at the Polish club in Bedford in the late 80s. Hyde Botanical club. Don't think I've even seen mention of Mansfield White Hart, Shotts, Loughbrough, KGBs, Trentham, Longton, the Florence Club, The Golden Hynde or even Queen's Hall Bradford. Guest manusf3a
AS well as the fleet and the wirrina already mentioned for Peterborough wasnt there also one at the cresset centre as I seem to recall going to one there about 80,81 one of the last all nighters I went to ,there was I think a coach put on from the Kettering area.It doesnt stick out in memory as being very good ,and at the time was one of what I thought were the final nails in going to soul all nighters. The final one I thought was a couple of years or so later when I was talked into going to an all nighter in what was the fleet to find a large percentage of rival piss heads roaming around with a couple of drunken brawls, lots of folk eating and chomping on chips and sausage sarnies and more than a few sleeping bodies round the edges. Then there was the mob sitting in the foyer playing cards and giving it the cool hand luke thousand yard stare from heads rising just above there uniform green flying(imitation)jackets.(Id bought a real one from army store in Norwich about five years before as they got them brand new(and sold them for 75 quid which was a good few quid back then) from the mildenhal air base and there was a big difference between them and the later mass produced copies, always best as in all cases go for the original not the copy or the boot). There seemed very few real soul night people at this affair. The only consulation was the dj s ,Brian Rae,Smudge(I think but not a 100% certain on that) etc and a hanfull of black and whites, just didnt seem as if many were there for the music?Dancefloor was pretty sparse most of the night from what I could see luckily the two lads who had talked me into this felt the vibe of the night and we got in the car about six and went back home to Corby. From what I gather now though over the years the foors did start to fill again and there are more than a few good all nighters around and travel is easier these days so I am looking forward to dipping a toe then maybe perhaps bellyflopping(appropiate at my age and physique) back into things. macca
Manus, you prefectly describe the Fleet all-nighters around 1980-1. The green flying jackets playing cards were from Northampton and ruled the shady activities roost at the time, even taking cheques, jewellry and watches in lieu of payment (that was novel). They also took to wearing flying suits with boxing boots, as I remember. They thought they were well naughty. This period was also characterised by the arrival of skinheads who were generally clueless about the music and were only there for the gear. I too stopped going in that period as I found it profoundly depressing. I went back a couple of times in 1983, but didn't recognise anyone apart from Tony Warot. Felt like a fish out of water. My only other all-nighter from that period was a one off visit to Leicester Oddfellows which I enjoyed. Peterborough had one all-nighter prior to the EASC/Phoenix Soul Club ones at the Wirrina in 1975. It was on September 2nd 1974 and I remember it like it was yesterday as it was my very first all nighter. It was held at a youth club, and part of the Stanground Secondary School complex. The djs were Andy 'Smudge' Smith, Gary Spencer, Paul Donnelly and Jonah. The guest dj was John Manship. Don't remember if any other djs were present, perhaps Tony Dellar. Maybe Smudge or Paul Donnelly will confirm this... Link to comment Social source share
Guest manusf3a
yes what a difference from the earlier Wirrina all nighters that I did attend when they started, they were really bloody good and along with my mates from Corby, wellinborogh ,kettering we all used to enjoy them theres no comparison to the farce of later years. As for that mob of muppets with the gambling fever and thier dead eye dick glints in their eyes,no doubt the result of many hours practice in front of mums bathroom mirror, they would of had their bums smacked no doubt by many of the local lads on the scene at the time.I can only imagine them travelling further afield and in earlier days going up to say coggy elliot and saying",Im taking your watch mate till next week to make sure you pay me for the 90% baking powder wrap ive given you!",Perhaps they could of sat down with the wolverhampton lads at the service station for a friendly game of poker,or even ",Hey Larry!,we,re taxing a quid each of you and your crew for protection money at this all nighter".They would have needed their flying suits and to go with them also space helmets as they would have been heading into orbit and seeing stars in any of such instances had they taken placeThe biggest thing of the lot is as you say though Macca, the bastards were all soul dead and they would have been just as happy playing cards and mastering how to look intimidating in ten easy lessons at a staus quo show.Sure there was always ",bad boys ",about from all round the country but the difference being nearly to a man they were all into the music and had a good working knowledge of what was what as far as that was concerned as well as what was in the mimmsOne of the things that stuck in mind for me about that ",last all nighter",was going to the toilets half way through the night and seeing the aforementioned second time round skins sitting on the floor where one had an adidas bag filled with cans of lager they were passing round and drinking as they talked about hammering ,him ,his mate and everyone under the sun,bit different from when you would see blokes standing around verbaling about records such as new sounds coming in vs oldies ,is it getting to funky etc?,and the more high level andrenilin charged atmosphere you had been used to seeing at all nighters.I remember Brian Rae coming in to use the bog and the look on his face as he saw the the group huddled round the bag of six packs and as he turned round and his eye caught mine, words could never have said more.. Tezza
It was 1987 for I think 6 nighters. First one upstairs was northern and downstairs modern etc. Northern went downstairs and the upstairs became oldies room, Steve Smith in charge of that one I think??? The December one was Kebs last nighter outside London before going into retirement, got a rousing ovation that went on for ages and Guy was stood there tapping his feet waiting to start his set Awesome nights and a magnificent setting. Closed on a 'technicality' as the Police caught someone with something in Chessy Town or on a bus. They were desperate to close it. I wrote for Derbyshire Times at the time and had my story ' retouched/edited' by the Entertainments Boss at the time. Packed the paper in after that. The place is still there and still a Proper Venue for a Nighter. Not sure if its been looked at again ?? Link to comment Social source share

It was a Bank Holiday Sunday and we went to Sheffield first (pretty sure it was then called Tiffanys). One of our party had got chucked out of the Locarno the week before and Terry Sampson pointed out us out (in a very loud way) to some people we rather he hadn't, so we fooked off to Chesterfield. As I recall it was real good night - all the Notts lot were there plus Southport and I think Darlo (to my shame I can't remember who was DJing). We all went to Todmorden all dayer next day.
