Citizen P Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 Was there not allnighters at a hotel at Heap Bridge -between Bury & Heywood, that Mark Bicknell and Paul Brennan had something to do with??? ATB Tony
Professorturnups Posted March 14, 2008 Posted March 14, 2008 There was definately two rooms Mark, oldies upstairs. Here's an advert from the November 1987 Echoes. Think there was just the one all-nighter after this one, Boxing night. Could have been one more Kebs last three records in his last set outside of London was the Boss 4, Charmaines and JD Bryant. Remember it now Chalky, great to see the old Echoes ad (remember it as Black Echoes originally). Been counting Nighter venues instead of sheep and came up with Herne Bay (Kent) from the 80s. There were a couple of Nighters at the Spinney in Norwich back in the early 70s but way before my time... Mark C
Mark Bicknell Posted March 14, 2008 Posted March 14, 2008 (edited) Was there not allnighters at a hotel at Heap Bridge -between Bury & Heywood, that Mark Bicknell and Paul Brennan had something to do with??? ATB Tony Yes early 90's Bridge Hall Hotel but it was no hotel more a working mens club type venue...lol Paul Brennan and Mark Valpond ran soul nights there but handed the venue over to myself, Pete Hollander and Dennis Billingham, it was around the same time as we ran The Concord Suite, Droylsden and a bit later Hyde Town Hall, the allnighter there ran for maybe 18 months on and off, there were at least three managers through the venue in that short time, we later found out that the gig was totally illegal as they never applied for an allnight dance licence...lol we did get the odd visit from the police but they never bothered us, it was a great little allnighter alway's full holding a couple of hundred people, the venue was knocked down several years ago and I think it's a supermarket now. Regards - Mark Bicknell. Hi Mark Hope you and family are all well. The Bridge Hall Hotel was originally a social club for the workers of the nearby paper mill. It was subsequently sold into private hands. At the time myself, Marc Vipond and Anthony O'Driscoll were travelling huge distances to get our weekly fix of Northern Soul - we decided to put on a soul nite near to home that would remove the need to travel, strangely we thought promoting would be easier than travelling We ran the soul nites on the first friday of every month with occasional niters. We passed on the promoting of the event to yourself as we were regular attendees at the Concord Suite Droylsden and wanted to listen to the rarer upfront sounds that you were playing at the time. The niter was nicely tucked away and secluded up Bridge Hall lane and was very sucessful in attracting people back onto the scene. These were the days when there were very few clubs around and soulies were also very few in number, halcyon days for me and most who were around at the time. This club was unique I believe in that it was the only niter where you could break off from dancing and go and play a game of snooker on one of the two full sized tables, very surreal! There were also showers downstairs on your way through to the toilets. Illegal yes but neverthless great fun and a great place to be. Sadly the venue was demolished and is now an upmarket housing estate. The B & Q superstore you refer to is nearby but runs alongside the M66. Below is an image of the original artwork master that we used for the flyers - sophisticated in its day! Paul

Also surprised to read on this thread that my son's present school once held niters! - Alderman Callow - used to work there too and never knew! And I've dug out old photos tonight trying to work out the other venue in Hinckley the thread starter mentioned, saw Martha Reeves there, but can't find the photos or remember the name of the venue
TOAD Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 Alderman Callow only a few ravers had a party there and the cops came and shut it

Guest stevejan Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 The second most important venue thread has got me thinking. Has anyone ever tried to put together a list of all the nighters there have been over the years ( not including weekenders ), to see how many came and went or are still around. I've listed the one's I have attended ( that I can remember) at some point or other to start Wigan Casino Maxim's (wigan ) Cricketers ( wigan ) the old cinema - name escapes me ( wigan ) Clifton Hall Cleethorpes Pier & Winter Gardens Bradford Queens Hall Tony's Empress Ballroom - Blackburn Morecambe Pier & Carlton Club Samanthas Take Two Coconut / Pineapple Grove - preston ( I know it was something tropical to do with fruit ) Twisted Wheel ( 80's) Rotters Manchester Hyde Parr Hall Stafford Windsford Notts Odd Fellows - Leicester Hinckley Sports Center & Town Hall ? ( it's where I met the wife I should really remember !! ) Newcastle Upon Tyne - Tiffs ( Mr M's sign over the door I remember ) Dolphin Centre - Darlington Kirkcaldy Dundee - was it called Clouds? Boston - Elizabethan Suite Peterborough - Wirrana & Fleet Notts Palais Derby Assembly rooms St Ives 100 Club Leighton Buzzard Six Hills - Leicester Barnsley Middleton Bidds Sheridans Stoke Kings Hall & Queens Hall Trentham Gardens Lifeline - Retford Keele These are the one's I can remember off the top off my head but sure i've missed places where I was taken without realising it, no wonder my head's muddled these days Not bad for a guy in his late twentys Lets see how many I didnt go to Going back A LONG way my first ever allnighter -Pleb's at Halifax and also String O Beads Bradford.

Guest dizzydeb Posted September 21, 2009 Posted September 21, 2009 Carlisle Market Hall allnighters, circa 1978- Mike Walker/Casino ran them from Wigan, and even put on buses from the Wigan area to Carlisle. I think they were concerned about another nighter in Carlisle which Richard Searling/Soul Sam dj at, which they thought would stop people from Scotland travelling down to the Casino. hiya, old post but im new to this! read things b4 about mike walker doin carlisle allnighters for money reasons and it has bugged me.mike was from carlisle and when i started going to the casino i eventually went to say hello as my mam kept bugging me to do so.we were vague relations and hadnt seen him 4 long time.he loved it cos someone from the family got the music.my cousin had been and had complained that no-one had asked her to dance!! thats where the idea for carlisle came from as there was fair few followers from there and he knew the town.i worked on the badge bar, good pay and i kept p****ng off to dance.he used to ask what people thought so he did care.too cold 1st time,no heaters on!! so there!!

Davenpete Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 (edited) What a silly idea - there's hundreds and hundreds. The White Heather was me and Pete (later on - Pete Lowrie started it at the Swallow Hilltop before it was moved) along with Dave Routledge and Chris (I always did the first three hours!!! - you can have real fun on a spot with that amount of time - allowed you to do a 'proper' spot ranging from wheel right through to modern) - loved doing it but it was murder to get people in - we wanted to move it to somewhere more accessible but the others wouldn't have it, ended up having to close it coz we had a couple of nights where we lost a lot of money. Anyway we decided to 'do it right' and go for quality - we had Saus, Roger Banks, Carl and Spenna, Mark Bicknell (I think) er loads of others. Dave Edited September 23, 2009 by DaveNPete

Actually was a great venue.....was it a three voices promotion or a whole in the wall jobby? I bought my copy of walk with a winner there for 25 squid. That was a bargain at the time....It was that tune and Anita Humes that were red hot at that time. Demand wise. Mike

I enjoyed both nights apart from remembering how cold it was Dave, lol I went with another guy from Girvan and Sparra from Newton Stewart. It was a great mix from what I remember. I recall some of the Modern I heard was totally new to my ears cos of me being deep into the 60's thing at the time. Folks were right to say it was in the middle of nowhere as it was tucked well out of the way, good memories of travelling from the west and getting lost both times:whistling: I am glad to have had the pleasure to have been there.
