When mainstream UK clubs started moving over to a less soul dominated playlist around 67/68, the outfit changed its name & became more progressive / syc rock (or whatever name that genre goes under). As the 'new' EGVO they soon had a big club following and so no doubt were signed to an album deal by CBS and placed on Direction. It's likely their LP tracks were cut quickly (I don't actually know if this is true or not) and so they could easily have used songs that they had performed in their soul days (did they, I don't know their LP tracks). Motown CW (for those that don't know 'CW' DOES stand for what it shouldn't) throws up some stinkers - there's also a Motown album of a ventiloquist and his dummy - Chester? (not sure how that works), I've also seen one of the British guitar blues rockers (Jimmy Page? - I forget) on Excello - which I believe did good business doing what were effectively vanity recordings of wannabe 'serious' white bluesmen in the mid-late 60s. The Chipmunks helped put Liberty on the map, they were one of the labels biggest money makers. Most famously for Big Star and the Ardent label. They also put out records by the British band Skin Alley. I remember Lena Zavaroni, seeing her perform on US TV shows back then, Stax invested a lot of marketing money behind her. The first original Stax releases (as Satellite) were rockabilly and country. Can't even remember what it's like.....my memory has wiped it from my recall.... Will have to dig it out it may be a rare pshyco funk/garage/house style dancer. Ummmmmm! They're like chalk and cheese. Rocksteady is from the mid 60's. All the sweet soul I've heard is just like the things that used to make the charts in the mid 70's, pop soul music, disposable stuff. Never been to a reggae event, dance, record fair. Never had any friends into reggae, apart from ones made on the internet post-96. Read everything I could (which wasn't much until a few years ago), bought records whenever I could find or afford them. EVERYBODY watched Soupy's TV show, and danced "The Mouse". That was the "in" thing to do. Even university graduate students watched it. Soupy's sketches were full of double entendres. The comedy was on 2 levels. 1 little kids, the other "mature adult". i'm really surprised so much got by the censors. I, myself, was one of the few people my age that did NOT buy "The Mouse".
