Looking for some info on this tune. I'm particularly interested in a version on Soul Club by The Volcanos but this could be under the wrong artist or an album track.

Chris, It's an un released track. Quite a few different takes on acetate in the hands of various DJ's. The Jesse James take that Butch has played for quite a long time is the best in my opinion. Has been released on Soul City now I believe.

So the version on Soul Club, is this an unreleased version by The Volcanos?

Is the Soul City release an official first release of Jesse James or is there an older original release and what label was that on?

the Volcanos is the name given to it by Butch when he covered it up. Its by Jesse James and there's another take that Kenny Burrell plays, bit of laughing at the start.

There's a released version by Cliff Nobles on Phil La Soul.

Both takes are on here in full somewhere as I've posted both.

I really like the Cliff Nobles version, also the instrumental aka 'The Horse'.

Think the JJ version is deffo the best though, more NS imo.

Is this the one, if so posted this last time the discussion arose....

First played by Butch, covered-up as the Volcanos, ..the second acetate was obtained by myself when I became aware that the song was an alternate version of Cliff Nobles vocal of The Horse...Jesses James confirmed that he was the vocalist on this 65 version recorded at Harthon, in Philly, with Luther Randolph playing piano and producing the track. Jesse told me he thought it was an appalling track and probably the worst thing he had ever done.

He was opposed to the arrangement of the song but did it despite this...following the session Luthers reluctance to change the construction of the song made Jesse decide that the only way to do things the way he wanted was to be in control...therefore he severed his relationship with Harthon and set up on his own. He finally got to cut Love is all right the way he felt it should have been done in the first place..but this time using Cliff Nobles...the flip picked up the air-play becoming a million seller.

As Jesse felt his version of the song was so bad it took me months to persuade him to let me have his acetate...he just could not see the attraction. When I was at his church for Sunday morning service in 98 he sang an a cappela version substituting the word Love for God ...as he is a Reverend it worked very well ...funny when we view it as one of the best Northern tracks of all-time that he views it as possibly the worst thing hed ever been involved in

Many thanks for the help but I still am confused.

I've just played the Soulclub Volcanos version and the Jesse James version on Manship and they are quite a bit different.

Are you sure they are the same?

They are the same record just different takes. The Volcano's on Soul Club is the version played by Kenny Burrell and this isn't the one covered as the Volcanos. The one on John Manships on Soul City is nearer to Butch's which was the one covered as the Volcanoes.

Look in refosoul, you'll find both takes in there as I have posted them in the past.

One of the all time great Northern records!!!
