Jaco Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 According to "Chicago Soul" the Penny lable was active twice, once in 1962 and then again from 1966 to 1970. In the latter period there was a sister lable, Nickel.
boba Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Penny lable from Detroit appears to be from 1962, owned by Roquel Davis. Penny lable from Chicago appears to be from around 1968, owned by Maurice Alpert. Penny was always officially owned by Morry Aplert (who owned the MET record shop in chicago) but after the creations 45 it was pretty much Richard Pegue running it. I think Morry ran the MET label himself around that time. Again, those first two 45s (joytones and creations) are from 1962 I think, then Pegue revived the label. It was still Morry's in name though.

I actually don't specifically know about Bill Lasley, but in the Chicago soul book (which I assume you're also getting the info from), it says he also ran expo/opex and webcor and success in Iowa. I knew webcor and celtex were the same label, but I didn't know that other stuff, interesting.

For good info on the Chicago Penny label take a look at Shades of Soul 31 page 7 a good read by Steve Edgar with additions by Pete Smith, Dave Flynn, Jerry Hipkiss, Andy Rix and Alan Pollard. befor i read this i never new that Richard Pegue based the Janis label on his sister's name and that Janis and Penny had a deal based on need for masters for the b side of there records. steve j
