Just watched her on Jools Holland and got to say she is an exceptional talent. What a voice. Reminds me of a cross between Dionne Warwich and Esther Phillips. Rewound it twice on Skye + and she gets better each time.

Not sure if any body has posted this ?

If you have Sorry !

But I really like this

great chart record better than usual run of the mill crap that's curned out and if it get's younger people wanting to hear similar sounds and get's them into the soul scene even better , let's not always be negative ,the scene needs new blood if this is a way of getting it then why complain ,

duffy's also done a cover of solomon burke's " cry to me " absolutly awesome version by todat's standards

Have to agree with Mr.Page, very nice tune, I like her voice, refreshing in todays bland and boring music industry.

It's a nice cute tune but I think her voice is a bit squeeky - as for Carmel I used to love her voice and think it's far better imo. :D

She's tops if ya ask me, saw her on Jonathan Ross while at work Friday, very good (Duffy that is not Ross, he's a twat!) and it struck me that she sounds an awful lot like Carmel from way back. What happened to her?

Do a search mate, its been discussed more times than Frank Wilson has been played, and far more than most soul artists have ever been discussed.

Personally i can't stand all this 60s sound-a-like stuff along with Nicole Willis, Frank Popp, Amy Winehouse. There are millions of records better without resorting to playing things like this. I'll be surprised if it gets played out anywhere.

Already commented on this on the previous thread.

I've heard it played out but as I've already said it was a bit of banter.

Totally agree with you Matt there are far better soul records to play than than this.

Frank Popp is crass. Amy Winehouse really is not worthy.

But I have to admit personally I like Nicole.

To each there own

with a lot of venues banning talc, due to health and safety issues i wonder if lighter fuel is an alterative to impressing people with your dancing .Must be good special effects .on the plus side good dancers but track no way northern.

Correct. And Trickster is there strutting his stuff too.

-Kev.

And despite who might be on the video it still reminds me of Wigans Chosen Few looking for there 5 minutes of fame.

I really can't see how this is soul, let alone Northern.

Retro pop is the best description I can apply.

No offence intended to anyone involved but that's my opinion, for what's it's worth

i think its an ok track..no its not northern although the influence can be heard...although it wont get played at many soul nights im sure ,along with the vid it will no doubt bring some new blood into the scene the same way two tone, mod revival and dare i say it footsie did !!...surly that can only be a good thing....at least when "normal" youngsters stray into a soul night they might not look at the dancers like they were from outer space !!

Topics merged.

Rachel stop encouraging them! :(

My obviously too subtle hint that we had talked about this enough has fallen on deaf ears I see, oh well nobody listens to me in the real world, why should this world be any different. :D

It's not a bad record

My only concern is that it doesn't lead to the commercialism of the scene we saw in the late 70s when due to Top of the Pops, this England, The Sun etc lots of people came to watch this strange spectacle and pretended to be into the music until the next fad came around

She was excellent on Jools, and the version of 'Mercy' she did on the show was far more soul than this Space Invader powered single, but the voice? I think she sounds like Lulu, but on the show she did show a certain tendency towards Joss Stone... ph34r.gif

The way I see it is she can sing, and she's been successful due to clever marketing. How many northerrn artists would of loved to be in that position in their time. Afterall, thats why they recorded in the first place, to be successful, and have that number 1 hit. They may of missed the boat somewhere, and just didnt get spotted, or not pushed in the right direction.

If Duffy had not been marketed as she was, and this single had been shelved - who knows who would of found this in 10 years time and said hey, I found a great unknown.

I don't personally think that either "Rockferry" or "Mercy" are particularly soulful, but I do know what they are, and that's f*cking ace thumbup.gif That said there is definately a Soul tinge to them, and had they been recorded 40 years ago by a black female soul singer, they would probably be well played out on the scene a long time ago and there would be no debate over whether they were soul or not.

Hats off to the girl, she knocks Ami Winehouse into a cocked hat for me - and she's WAY better live than just about any female singer around at the moment.

Top video for mercy - I think it's a nice, little respectful nod to the scene personally and there's some great Northern moves in there (some not so Northern like, but you can't have everything).

A great talent and I for one will be buying her album (wow, I haven't bought a chart album for about 10 years!)

I was undecided until we went to see her last night courtesy of the lovely Liam Quinn! (Thanks Liam! )

She was fantastic, how she sounds on the album doesn't really do her justice. Really soulful & most importantly (for me) looked like she was lost well & truely in the music!

Liam did a cracking set beforehand aswell, lots of people in the crowd were toe tapping & head bobbing...was nice to see a lad ask Liam what the music was because he really liked it-we lost no time in shoving a Rugby all nighter flyer in his hand!

I will be buying her album i think!

I wouldn't have thought it's too smart a move putting up a direct MP3 of a currently available CD mate, a bit risky in my opinion.

Yep, quite, I've removed the attachment. This isn't a file sharing site, we don't allow downloadable mp3s of any tracks because of copyright issues and the problems it could cause for the site (and quite possibly the members who post them)... if that applies to ridiculously obscure soul tracks then it very definitely applies to a new release CD!!

I'll be buying it at the weekend aswell!

Yep, No.1 single for 4 consecutive weeks, the third biggest-selling record of the year so far with 215, 731 sales as of last week and the biggest airplay audience for several years - 91.01 million listeners over the last 4 weeks.

Her album went in @ No.1 this week as well.

I like it - I wish we had more records like this that have such an impact on the masses. Even if a small percentage of those listeners and buyers go on to listen to more authentic stuff it'll be a good thing.

Is this the same Liam that entered the farce that was the Blackpool Tower Dancing Competion ?

Don know if its already been said because I haven`t got time to read the whole thread but I reckon the One Republic version of `Mercy` is far superior (Apologies if someone has already said this)

Cheers for putting this link on - I've been listening to this on the radio at work for the last few weeks or so and managed to miss who it was every time! It was driving me mad! Got as far as writing down Gabriella but then missed her surname ... you don't get many Cilmi's to the pound do you!!

Good tune though

Also, back on topic, think the Duffy album is great

Glad to hear a few female singers coming through who aren't frightened of being a 'bit different' and not all sounding like Beyonce, Maria Carey etc etc :(

Dont mind Frank Popp's Breakaway though. However, Duffy, Winehouse etc arent bad but they are not great. Compared to the artists and styles they are obviously trying to emulate they pale in comparison.

Do any of these copycat artists even come close to the likes of Jackie Wilson, Margie Joseph, Frankie Beverly, etc etc. Plus the production of 6ts and 7ts soul records has a very distinctive feel that can never be recreated by the likes of todays copycat artists.

I have nothing against any of them and a few of their tunes are ok bu they dont give me the same feeling I get when listening to tunes like "Because of My Heart" or "My Heart is calling." Winehouse et al have good taste in music obviously but they are not really my cup of tea.

Long live authentic Soul.

Talking of white female "soul" artists, whatever happened to the elusive Joss Stone, does she still reside in the UK or has she become a tax exile.
