Same thing as will happen to Duffy. Disapear without trace when they get fed up of trying to be trendy by singing 'retro-soul/pop'. Don't like her at all, not a patch on Joss Stone, and she's not that good. Fine pop music, but nothing to do with soul whatsoever, IMHO.

as Helen Shapiro, could sing soul, in my book, as could Dusty S. But the current trend for making soul influenced tracks like this and WHINEhouse, etc are just that. Soul influenced but not soul.

Not just Liam featured dancing; the guy with the grey top and shaven head looks and dances a lot like Keb Darge. Personally, I like the track.

I wonder if there will be an Album similar to Back To Black,

following the success that the Album has had for Amy Winehouse.

For the Future, it would be good to hear some of these Artists get back to the Roots of Soul,

and record some gutsy, gritty raw stuff. There are many fantastic records to cover.

On the subject of Frank Popp tho....Hip Teens still gets played regularly at the dos I go to (all over) AND If I'm in the mood I'll dance (its still as catchy as it ever was n SOOOOO much better than Girls ALoud as Del, in an uncynical manner, rightly pointed out!

this thread will go on and on but it's a change from modern V 60's ! lol frank pop big hit in Germany and switzerland loads of radio play there and both chooons still getting spins out and about and the floor is still busy when they are played

Hiya....your post prompted me to delve into my musical memory/past n found this...(I bought "Bad Day" And Sally etc in the 80's)

Back in the 80s, in pop music, we bravely made it all up as we went along. Nothing was too great a challenge. Everything was an inspiration; blues, ska, rock, latin - and jazz. Musical enthusiasm often meant that you played first, then began learning.

As this fine performance will demonstrate, there's been a lot of learning going on.

Like it's nearby watering hole, Cleethorpes, Scunthorpe in Lincolnshire might be better known as the butt of every third rate comedian's routine. Hearing Carmel McCourt for the first time, they soon took Scunthorpe off the gag sheet.

Carmel was well into her teens when she left Lincolnshire for the more artistic climate of Manchester, where she met bass player Jim Parris. Jim's diverse musical influences included King Crimson and Duke Ellington and a strong interest in African music; together with Jim's cousin Gerry Darby, they formed Carmel and began a long career of defying definition. .To begin with, it was the cool simplicity of the stripped-down string bass of Jim Parris, Gerry Darby's drums and Carmel Mc Court's soaring vocals, which stood out from the new pop crowd. They soon caught the attention of London Records. Their first album, The Drum is Everything, produced by Mike Thorne, was soon in the top 20 album chart and included the two top twenty singles Bad Day and More, More, More. By 1985 Carmel was voted Best Jazz Singer at the Messina Festival in Italy. Their next album, The Falling (1986) saw them working with the legendary Brian Eno and featured, as a result of Jim Parris's adventurous enthusiasm, African percussionists. It rapidly went gold and the single Sally sold an astonishing half million copies. By the late 80s Carmel's range of styles and repertoire had broadened out to include everything from jazz and reggae, to blues, R&B and gospel. Carmel may have risen to initial prominence in the age of wide shoulder pads and pop glamour, but there is a rugged confidence and indestructibility in their artistic approach which has ensured a huge, permanent following, especially in Europe. 1991 saw them working with acclaimed engineer John Timperley famed for his sessions with Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus. The result was the stunning album, Good News, (1992) produced by Jim Parris and recorded completely live in Germany. In Britain, Ronnie Scott's was a natural venue in 1997 for Live At Ronnie Scott's, reminding fans just what a treasure we have here.

Live performance has always been central to CARMEL'S work and this fine DVD captures them with a superb mix of favourites.

Carmel and Jim are still the core of the band, Gerry having retired from live performance. CARMEL have always attracted the very best musicians to perform with them, (Sophie Hastings on drums is a fine example) and this soulful mix of jazz, R&B and soul covers just about every popular musical genre you could wish for. Not many artists can offer a set which encompasses Bob Dylan, Abdullah Ibrahim, Smokey Robinson and Duke Ellington to such a startling, original standard.

There's no band quite like CARMEL Soul, commitment and a continuing sense of adventure all combine and ride roughshod over any remaining musical boundaries, offering us here, courtesy of modern technology, a visual and aural feast which at the very least ought to have you kicking off your shoes and cutting a rug in front of the telly. Yesterday, Scunthorpe - today, the World.

All we can ask of this fine outfit is More, More, More!

At work we have Local radio chart stuff blasting out, over and over.

Same songs repeated from a Playlist, hour in, hour out, again and again.

It's just nice to hear something closer to my kind of music.

Good article on the subject in the Observer this week...along the lines ...

What a shame, though, that brains and other important body parts - ears, guts, gristle, balls, belly, soul, that kind of thing - have also seemingly vanished from female pop's body politic in the wake of Winehouse's success. Every record label is chasing their own Amy - preferably a white one and one without all that ink and crack. (If you are black, British and - say - called Estelle, you have to take your retro soul-pop stylings to America to be given a proper hearing.) Suitable candidates are being fast-tracked into tidy marketing synergies and given generous press coverage. All these second- and third-generation Amys are, without exception, easier on the ear and a damn sight less trouble than Winehouse herself.

Never understood the obsession on this list with white artists trying to sound black...why not just listen to music that sounds good?

Anyway, I agree Mercy is 'catchy' and I also agree with '6ts' scene 'good publicity' fed up with hearing about Wigan!

Frank Popp, yes 'catchy' and again sometimes Ill dance to it sometimes I dont - prob depends if Im knackered from dancing to other tunes or not!

Each to their own, we all have our own opinions, thats whats so good and if people dont agree with me - thats fine too as its their opinion only.

I like it, probably buy it as well. My 19 year old daughter listened to it a while ago and said 'I like it BUT it sounds like that northern soul stuff you listen too'. Shown her the clip on U-Tube and she said "They're even doing THE dance!" She's got it on her Ipod along with Johnny Maestro - I'm Stepping Out Of The Picture & Castaways - Liar Liar, find me a connection please.
