Guest bazabod_downunder Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 The ABC have just started to show the series The Story Of Soul here in Australia, 1st week was dedicated to Ray Charles, this weeks was concerned with Sam Cooke's contribution to the emerging soul genre, next weeks is advertised as entirely concentrating on Motown, now I'm sure that the most of you in blighty have had the pleasure of viewing this series, my question is how deep does it delve into the perpetuation of the soul scene by the UK affectionados & it's expansion?.....I'm gonna watch it anyways, just wondering. Tommy1 Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 While we're at this, is it possible to buy this in the UK? They showed it in Norway a while ago, but it's impossible to get it on DVD....

Guest JJMMWGDuPree Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 There's no real research if that's what you mean. It basically follows someone's own personal take on the progress of soul through the years, and at times it's pretty tenuous in my book. You'll already have noted that both Sam Cook and Ray Charles are credited with being responsible for the birth of 'soul R&B', whatever that may be. Me, I quite distictly remember the music they were both making as being called rock'n'roll, and so it was. It just suits someone to call it some kind of soul in order to fulfil it's criteria to be included in the show. Personally I have no problem with either Charles or Cook being in the programme, but they should either have started with music sctually described as soul at the time, or gone right back way before either of those two to when the music was really created. What would be really great is if someone would do a programme about music in which every avenue of possibility was explored rather than just trying to pass off the programme maker's opinion as the gospel (No pun intended) truth.
Guest bazabod_downunder Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 Maybe the BBC website might help? I'll have a look in the ABC shop as they are pretty good at releasing anything that is shown here on the channel. KTF Baz
FrankM Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 While we're at this, is it possible to buy this in the UK? They showed it in Norway a while ago, but it's impossible to get it on DVD.... It is not possible to buy a legitimate release as the clips were licensed for broadcast not for sale.
Tommy1 Posted February 24, 2008 Posted February 24, 2008 It is not possible to buy a legitimate release as the clips were licensed for broadcast not for sale. So I've heard too. But does anyone here have a recording of this (DVD)? I'll pay you well
