boba Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Always thought it was a strange name, can imagine them going for a booking and telling the promoter their name "Matta baby? Whats the Matta Baby"- "Nothing, wer'e fine!" I think what you are saying IS the joke behind the name, it's like a novelty dance record. It was just a Richard Pegue studio project pretty much. Even the groups he put out were mainly studio things where he would find whoever was available and put them on record and reuse them across groups.
Northern Soul Uk Posted February 28, 2008 Author Posted February 28, 2008 (edited) Thanks very much for your answers, I thought the Mecca, but there were so many top tunes played there that it's a bit wishy washy as to weather it was or not. Could have been Cleethorpes as I was there every week in those days. OK, what about ' Raw Soul - The Gig'? any ideas as to where that started out? Edited February 28, 2008 by steveluigi

Hi Steve, "Do The Pearl Girl" was one of my biggies at the time. First heard it at the Mecca as per many things in those days and then got my copy and blasted it at the Central, Samanthas, Cleethorpes and Wigan. "The Gig" was pretty much Cleethorpes all the way. Best, Ian D

Ernie Andrews Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 as Pete S Knows this is one of my favs as we have had some battles on the bay bidding for them. Did some research into this when I was young boy working at global. It supposedly was the Chessmen doing a jam spot with all the technicians in the studio having some fun. I got a reply from Chess records at the time saying this was abit of fun and the vocal was supposedly one of the Chessmen messing about with Helium balloons. (apparantly their was a party for one of the execs at the studio) Was told that if I sent $30 they would send me a dozen copies they had. Already having acopy at the time and being an absolute skinflint I declined (Wished I had now).

Best, Ian DThanks for that Ian, I knew you played it but wasn't sure where, just got a copy of both for a snip of a price. Well chuffed!!! Top tunes.
