Guest Una Scot-Oz Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 I had two different "zones". When I lived in Southport it was: Sunday - Tiffany's in Ainsdale Monday - a little club in Preston - don't remember the name, but I think it was usually a gay bar as gradually more and more people turned up in drag and we stopped going! We used to occasionaly go to Richard Searling's night - I think that was on a Monday? (at Wigan) Wednesday - Carlton in Warrington - when we had money Thursday - Scarsbrick Hotel in Southport When I moved back to Scotland Sunday - Hilton - Edinburgh Monday - Stirling Soul Club Wednesday - Bathgate/Blackburn Miner's Club Thursday - Metro in Falkirk - or sometimes McQue's in Bannockburn Tuesday was the only night I was home and sleeping at 6.30! I'm sure all the Scottish crew remember these venues, I've just met up with half of them again in January!
Guest Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 'Must've been spoilt round here a selection from '73 to about '77 ish would include Piccadilly Club, Manchester-Mondays and Thursdays Carolines, Manchester-Tuesdays Carlton-Warrington-Wednesdays, Blue Room-Sale-Thursdays' Hi Tony/ Mark, Can you tell me where was the Piccadilly club was, who dj'ed there etc. And if you preferred the Blue Room with Colin Curtis or Richard Searling ? Thanks Greg.
Koolkat Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Our week would be something like this. Mon night. Underground. Blackburn Tues night. Burnley Cricket Club. This was until we got into some fisticuffs with the local Burnley guys. We had the good fortune to trap off with some off the local girls with nice results I might add and this pissed the locals off. Wed night. Tiffs at Darwen. Levine and Curtis djed there for a short spell.(snoopy dean and ladies choice times) Thurs night. Cant remember. Fri. Accrington british legion also Spinning Jenny(Guy Hennigan started there) Sat night. Casino, Casino Casino all the way. Sun night. Blackbeat. Bolton Football Club. Another one that we got into scrapes with locals at. Same reason, local girls just found us irresistable. Typing all this out as fetched such memories flooding back. God I wish I could go back knowing what I know now.

Guest Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 Hi Tony, thanks for the info...sounds good. by the way which year did you play at The Piccadilly, was it a big venue etc?
Rbman Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 That's right Ian. We ran from Dec 2001 - Mar 2007. Martin joined us shortly after we started up replacing Rob Chadwick who decided he didn't want to DJ any more. We had 5 venues altogether. Starting at McNab's near Cannon St then the Old Blue Last, where the crowd dropped off from 50 to about 15 - 20 regulars. Then the KFC ads started and we were asked to run a weekly night at Nylon the City night club and star of the Bar Wars TV programme. We managed to persuade the owners to make it monthly though and had really good numbers in until it closed in Dec 2005. Then we were off to Vivos just across Cheapside. where after a good start numbers began to dwindle once more. When Vivo's closed for refurbishment we moved, albiet briefly, to the Ditch bar in Shoreditch, a step too far away from the City it seemed as numbers fell once more the venue pulled the night not long after whilst one of their other nights decided to use the SITC name before we'd even packed up. Good times and great friends! I went to the first one held at Nylon and don't think I missed many after that. Great nights making new friends and finding out there was so much more to "northern soul" than I remembered. What with SITC and TOS midweeks were really something to look forward too. "What about those nights in Walthamstow at the Soul Bar run by Audra, Maria and Alice...fantastic mix of types of sounds. Happy days

Citizen P Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 Hi Tony, thanks for the info...sounds good. by the way which year did you play at The Piccadilly, was it a big venue etc? I guess it would be a coupla years say '75 to '77ish. I am gettin'on now yer know( but still CONSIDERABLY younger than Brian ) Not that big a room, it had a mainstream disco upstairs and we were downstairs, decorated like a Shanghai Knocking Shop in reds and golds with Buddhas on the walls-and a very interesting seating area that was the scene of some very rude encounters (or so I'm told cough, cough ) Now you should really ask Brian Walker, What the hell was the Cheech & Chong connection????? "Here, Black Lassie" Tony
Guest Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 thanks tony. do you have any contact details for brian walker? im researching Manchester clubs between 75-85 so any info is a great help. do you remember The Connection Club on Lloyd Street by any chance, andy peebles used to do a thursday night late 75/ early 76 there ?
Guest Awake 502 Posted April 11, 2008 Posted April 11, 2008 Assembly Rooms in Rotherham, remember 600 in on a wednesday night !! How many times a week did they run Northern nights at the Herringthorpe Leisure Centre, tuesday, friday and sunday at one point, and the one in the swimming baths too Art Disco was certainly busy in those days. Maybe Mr Hampsey can refresh my memory on Gilly and the Soul Machine, I was only a young at the time... I remeber a few good nights at Kimberworth Park too, with Harry and others.... Dim and distant past.....
Guest Posted April 11, 2008 Posted April 11, 2008 remember going on hols to blackpool once in the mid 70s went to the mecca saturday night then went to wigan casino mid week think it was wednesday night ????,and remember not a lot of people there and they served beer at the casino midweek!!! anyone else remember these nights, Yea I remember the Wednesday nights at Wigan didnt last long though Also remember them trying Sunday nights with a big promotion saying James Brown was going to appear which of course he never did, they didnt last long. This was the time when they were trying to eak every last penny out the Casino name not long before I stopped going. Mickey Mouse's Concerto in B major being the final nail for me

It was really quiet and Richard Searling used to play his new stuff. It was a really social night in comparison to the usual goings on! More time to chat.

God I wish I could go back knowing what I know now. I went to the Burnley Cricket Club from around 72 onwards. We also went to the Rose Room Thursdays, Todmorden on Fridays and Sundays, and do's every night of the mid- week in Burnley pubs. Re the fisticuffs with the Burnley crew. I would imagine that was solely due to you coming from Blackburn. We were regularly in Blackburn and Bolton and it always kicked off. I sometimes cringe when I think of some of the nights out we had in Blackburn. Funnily enough.... we always won! Laney, what do you remember of our away trips?
