Guest Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 (edited) Mid - Week ( Monday to Thursday ) Venues ...... This topic came into conversation last friday evening , whilst I was in the company of Mr Barnsley . Derek Greenhoff , when we broached the subject of attendances at venues , and how mid - week venues - such as the renowned Londoner in Barnsley , never failed to attract regular crowds of 200 + on a Monday night ......... Once an essential part of the menu that made up diet of the NS scene followers in the 1970s , these venues are now , sadly , a very rare occurance in the structure of today's events calendar ....... We all have our particular favourites and recollections from years ago , with mine being the Mondays at The Londoner ( Barnsley ) , Tuesday nights at The Winter Gardens in Cleethorpes , and the odd sorties on a Thursday night to The Blue Room in Sale ......... What were your favourite mid - week venues ? Malc Burton Edited February 18, 2008 by Malc Burton

Guest Rich Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 The Carousel room 1971 Peterborough...Tuesday nights, always packed. Inkersall Green MW, Weds night back in the 70s - went to a couple when I was growing up (and before I joined up). Only recently though whilst I was working down in the smoke 99-2004, TOS downstairs at the River Bar, London Bridge was a belter; whilst Mark Houghton's Wed night doo at the Smersh grew into a top doo. There was another Wed night doo which moved from 'The Old Blue Last' (I think) to some smart downstairs bar (Cafe Vivo or something like). That looked as though it could be a do, but I moved back home and only got to a couple. cheers RickS

soul45s Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 Mid - Week ( Monday to Thursday ) Venues ...... Victoria Hall in Keighley circa 77 -80 Monday nights, Julius K Scragg roadshow...lol Great venue, some really good Northern played plus current funky Disco chart hits of the time Always packed, some top dancers from the area. I never missed a night, great atmosphere. A couple of years later they moved it to Bingley Arts Centre, Wednesdays, only went there a couple of times, it was a bit too 'poppy' for me
Citizen P Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 Must've been spoilt round here a selection from '73 to about '77 ish would include Piccadilly Club, Manchester-Mondays and Thursdays Carolines, Manchester-Tuesdays Carlton-Warrington-Wednesdays, Blue Room-Sale-Thursdays ALL weekly ATB Tony

Sean Hampsey Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 Mines got to be Tuesday night at the White Greyhound in Edlington, Malc. Incredible night that was. Pete Shirley's Dad ran the pub and Pete and his mates (inc yours truly) used to get behind the decks. Folk came from miles around to what was, essentialy a mess around, but turned out to be one of THE most important venues around at the time (79/80) in our neck of the woods. Gawd, when I think of the tunes that were played there. Light years ahead of its time. Sean

Sean I saw Pete last year at the Winter Gardens Farewell , and he has still got that cherubic choirboy look ........ The WG , was , as you say , an important venue at the time , and because of the musical policy there , it became a very creditable one ........ I have not been in the area for a long time , but the last time I went past the WG , the building had been sold , and I have no doubt it has been demolished , and replaced with houses ...... Guest Andy Newbold Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 Dam your tartan socks Mr B you just beat me to this thread... T'was only the other day I was having a little reminiss about old local clubs and my thoughts turned to York. 1974-6 to be precise The Ebor Suite above the Cats Whiskers in said town, every other Thursday. I well remember this as I quite often spent my fare home on records thanks to Mr Rhodes & Mr Holmes, which was not good as I was stationed at RAF Linton-on-Middle-of-Knowhere-12-mile-to-walk-to-civilisation. You know when they say it was a spooky night, well that walk was about the worst. However the Ebor suite was a thumping good night, always plenty of peeps in and the music was grand.

Paul McKay Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 (edited) That would have been Soul In The City run by Martin Thomson, Paul McKay, Dave Greenhill & Mac. That's right Ian. We ran from Dec 2001 - Mar 2007. Martin joined us shortly after we started up replacing Rob Chadwick who decided he didn't want to DJ any more. We had 5 venues altogether. Starting at McNab's near Cannon St then the Old Blue Last, where the crowd dropped off from 50 to about 15 - 20 regulars. Then the KFC ads started and we were asked to run a weekly night at Nylon the City night club and star of the Bar Wars TV programme. We managed to persuade the owners to make it monthly though and had really good numbers in until it closed in Dec 2005. Then we were off to Vivos just across Cheapside. where after a good start numbers began to dwindle once more. When Vivo's closed for refurbishment we moved, albiet briefly, to the Ditch bar in Shoreditch, a step too far away from the City it seemed as numbers fell once more the venue pulled the night not long after whilst one of their other nights decided to use the SITC name before we'd even packed up. Good times and great friends! Edited February 20, 2008 by sitc01

Malc Burton I cut my teeth at mid-week venues, there was a soul club in Blackpool, around 74-75 that ran soul nights every night, Scoey's, on Victoria Road, run by Peter Schofield. DJ's were mostly local guys, with Ian Levine playing every Tuesday. Blackpool Casino on the Pleasure Beach used to have regular soul nights on Thursdays too...I was always late for school in those days , worth it though for the real education..... Eddie Hubbard Posted February 25, 2008 Posted February 25, 2008 Myself and a few Banbury guys used to go to The Lafayette in W/ hampton on a wednesday in the late 70's , run by Neil Rushton , we hadn't even recovered from Wigan by Wednesday , and this great night just about finished us off !! Remember buying a black Gamble copy of Frank Beverly off Clive Jones for £25 which was a lot of money then .Happy days .........Best ,Eddie

Wrongcrowd Posted February 25, 2008 Posted February 25, 2008 (edited) I never knew you were from Blackpool Cliff ? You learn something every day , what a great time to live up there eh ? Best ,Eddie Yep, I grew up there (never want to see another slot machine again, ever), then emmigrated to Northampton to spread the word, and make converts (saved Trev from a life of Quo , and Val from his Captain Beefheart LPs ), never a word of thanks though . Great time growing up there, just too young for the Mecca though, but there were some magic record shops there, Sinfonia was one, run by a guy called Sandy Mountain, who had a great British collection, and my mate's older brother's record collections to wade through (when they weren't looking). There was another club that I used to go to on Saturdays, Disco 72, in Central Blackpool, opposite the pier, it was 50/50 soul and chart tunes, but it was top to me and my mates 'cos they'd play "This Is The House Where Love Died", when the other discos were playing "Smarty Pants" Great times Edited February 25, 2008 by Wrongcrowd

Malc Burton I remember it being on but it was a bit off the bus routes for me, IL also had regular nights at his parent's club, The Lemon Grove in St Annes - there was plenty going on back in the day.
