I think you'll find that at least some of these - Mel Britt being a good example - are records that were counterfeited by SS (allegedly, ahem ahem...) in a manner that made them almost indistiguishable from the originals.

I can't ever remember anyone selling a real Mel Britt for nine quid, even when nine quid paid for a weekend's drinking/drugs and dancing!

My copy of the Jades' I'M WHERE IT'S AT is on the REE label (Silver and black) - it says it's a promotion copy

REE501 - b/w MOTHER'S ONLY DAUGHTER

Matrix (hand-scratched) is as per the catalogue number.

Is mine a kosher copy or a boot?

Original is on Nite Life

This looks like the sort of thing you used to find in Russ's Records booth at T'Casino for £1.25 :D

Soul Bowl had Mel Britt on list for £12, Lee David (issues) for £2.50 for weeks on end, James Fountain ditto. It depends on how old the list is! Remember seeing Yvonne Baker @£6. All originals.

Del-Larks and Salvadores do seem extraordinarily cheap though, even for back then! (I doubt he had more than one copy, if at all)

Thanks for the info, fellows - I was never sure (I'd spotted the REE-production "pun" way back, but thought I wouldn't mention it)

It was a present from my little bro' about 23-24 years back, so it didn't cost me aught...

...and it plays fine cool.gif

Isn't there a more look-a-like Nite Life boot as well or did I really get a bargain 20 years ago? huh.gif

Weren't the Del Larks and The Salvadors booted around the same time on lookalike's? Del Larks blue and white with the Queen City logo and The Salvadors on a blue (PB) boot? It was also a ploy of Mr S to advertise 45s and then send you 'substitutes' as the one you ordered was 'out of stock'.

The cheapest copy of Mel i ever saw was £20 in a Clive Jones sales box, then again I used to see lots of Sam Williams Tower demos for the same price rolleyes.gif Ahh for a Tardis

Remember the Charles Johnsons advertised in Echoes for £1.25 same with the Lew Kirtons  on Alston

Mind you Woody on the subject of lists, I used to get one every month off a lad in Wales, cannot for the life of me remeber his name, but he used to send out a 2 page list of stuff that back then did not seem that rare, some of the lists I have stashed in the loft somewhere

Remember Phoning him to take the Frankie Beverley on Fairmount off him for £22 but when i rang it was sold, best of it was I was"nt that bothered at the time, blush.gif:unsure: I thought ah well I "ll get another one some time

he aint here at the moment, he will no doubt get back to you, we do have some other old sales lists in the loft, from allsorts of places and people, will have to get them out and have a good laugh at what we all passed by at the time, in favour of current tunes we all wanted then, it does go to show that there is a mass of unknown 45,s and really great underplayed stuff that is yet to have its day me thinks, but it takes balls to play it out, when somebody somewhere will say , never heard that, can we hear something we know!!! same old, same old,

its a never ending drama aint it, and of course woody being woody the hoarder laugh.gif there is loads of blues and soul mags( rimmer please duck now :D )black music mags and even records, one day , he has to sort it out rolleyes.gif

Yes, I think it was Clive Jones who had the Yvonne Baker (vinyl demos) for £6 - and I'd spent all my cash as usual! I think Eula Cooper was one of the most expensive items I saw on Soul Bowl's list (in the 70's anyway) at a staggering £20!

As for Lew Kirton and Charles Johnson, these were readily available as new releases at 80p in 1978 and 1980 respectively.

Speaking of Mel Britt, I saw his name (as Melvin Britt) listed among backing singers on an LP the other day, but have promptly forgotten which album it was! Will post up when I've checked... I remember the excitement of seeing Wally Cox and Joe Hicks' names listed similarly years ago (on albums by Marvin Gaye and Bobby Womack I think)
