chrissie Posted April 3, 2005 Posted April 3, 2005 Im replying to you dave the point being?/.The northern soul scene is ok in the east midlands. But my question is were was these people in the eighties and early nineties?.There was a vibrant soul scene in mansfield and north notts through out those decades. And dont give me crap about weve had our kids and were out to play again. Are the current promoters cashing in pardon the pun. link Don't start me off again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guest Phil Richards Posted April 3, 2005 Posted April 3, 2005 Re the new soul night only half a mile down the road from the Station. The clash should just be a one off. Have spoken with one of the promoters and will be letting him know our dates for the rest of the year. The new venue has plenty of other free Friday's in future months, (I've checked that out) so there should be no need to clash. Gaye where are these free Friday's ?? You have Goodyears, Junction 9, The Black Horse, so thats 3 Fridays out the window. And I know the promotors did'nt want to run up against these venues. As X co-promotor of the station, I have all the dates for the station hotel and did inform the promotors that the April date clashed with the Station. Also may I remind everyone that this is "NOT" a new venue infact I dj,d there last year. Phil Richards -------------------- Phil Please read my post properly. The venue in dudley that I referred to as the new venue in dudley has plenty of free Fridays. The original night at the new venue was the Saturday after the Station until it was changed to the Friday. That is exactly as I was told by the original promoters. It was only after you asked to be involved with that venue that it was changed. However I will be fair and say that it was only the small room booked on the saturday and when changed to the big room I was told they had to change the date as the big room was not available. Just as you say, people will go where they choose. They will also make their own minds up about what they think. However, when you don't read correctly read or understand what is written down, that's when it causes problems. I will repeat yet again that Club Dudley has plenty of free fridays, in the coming months. Gaye link Gaye, please read my post properly, and try and understand what I am saying!! Yes there are free Friday's available for Studio 1, but these dates would clash with other well established venues i e, Goodyears, Junction 9, so therefore you are restricted in what Friday's are available. I would also like to point out that I did "NOT ASK" to get involved, Steve, the co promotor who by the way has been a friend of mine for over 30 year's. Asked me if I would book the DJ's and help promote the venue. Anyway if the Station is so well attended you have nothing to fear from studio 1. Infact I was with both promotor's last night over at birmingham, where they informed me of your telephone conversation. And as Bill told you in that conversation, "PHIL" has nothing to do with booking dates for STUDIO 1. If you have a problem with the dates for Studio 1, I suggest you keep it off list, as neither of these promotor's are on soul source and therefore cannot directly reply to you. Phil Richards

Phil Richards link Phil Before you decide to go down that road of numbers at venues let me just say there are more measures than volume alone. I'd rather as people have said on other threads offer something different. In fact if you recall that was the reason the Station was set up. There was no point starting up another venue even 2 years ago that went down the road of offering the same as was already available elsewhere in the area. If all I wanted was a packed venue and the usual, I'd be going along to those venues as a punter, which I often do. However if you wish to continue to offer Jctn 9 and Goodyears type music , it isn't a problem to me and you will certainly pull in punters who want no more than a good social night and a piss up till 2 am. I just feel like others do, judging from the phone calls we've had, and the messages on here, that it's unnecessary congestion in the same town, especially when with proper planning, it could be avoided. I was answering the congestion question and then your misinterpretation of what I said. I don't think I can explain it more clearly than that and I don't have to take it off list to address the comments you made. I stand by what one of the promoters told me in the phone conversation I had with him, only time will tell if he is a man of his word. As I said people will form their own opinions based on what they see and hear. Anyway I have more important things to do, this discussion is taking me away from some course work I have to do, so even if you don't follow this I won't be answering it again. Gaye

Gaye link Gaye, can I just mention that I am in the smaller room playing ska and rocksteady and Jamaican R & B, NOBODY has ever attempted that round here, if that's not being different I don't know what is. Granted, it might be a disaster, but I think it's worth a try and quite a few people have been in touch about it.

Gaye link Gaye Well I believe they will be offering something different after all 1 of the country's leading allnighter and busiest DJ's Dave Rimmer will be on, x catacombs DJ Blue Max, who has an awsome collection of records, then we have Pete Smith in the second room playing rock steady soul, ska, and jamaican r&b so that is offering something different and if the place is packed out, then obviously the promotor's are doing something right. Bill, is a man of his word, and he did inform me that he has,nt given any assurance to anyone as to future dates, the reason being he has,nt got any as of yet!! As to phone calls, It look's like Studio 1 will be well attended next week, due to the overwhelming interest that ppl have shown!! Therefore I will let you get back to your course work, because after all this is only a soul night and not a life or death situation. Phil Richards

Gaye link What is "Jctn 9 and Goodyears type music" ? Personally I thought they were both Soul nights, not everything they play is to my choice, that's why I probably only attend them two or three times a year, but there again, not everything played at the Station is to my choice either. By the way, I'm the guest DJ at Goodyears on April 15th, hope to see you there, I'll pass your comments about "a good social night and a piss up till 2am" on whilst I'm there if you want. And we are looking forward to your spot at Goodyears, it will be another good night out at this excellent venue. Phil
Dave Rimmer Posted April 3, 2005 Posted April 3, 2005 Junction 9 and Goodyears both finish at 1 am not 2 am link Awesome in it's simplicity, I love it
Guest in town Mikey Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 (edited) This topic could relate to anywhere in the country. I used to do the in town listing in London, and would often shake my head at the number of do's on the same night. Its a shame, but cant really be helped. As has been noted, often venues can only be booked for a certain night, and if you want to be able to book consistently, sometimes you have to take dates, as a promoter, you'd probably rather not. Been putting local to me dates in my diary this weekend and on 13th May, there is Valley Commando's Abergavenny Which is about 30 miles from Welsh Harp Gloucester Which is about 10 miles from Saracens, Cheltenham. I'd love to go to all, but will have to choose, and the choice will probably depend on where mates are going rather than who is on etc etc. Edited April 4, 2005 by in town Mikey
Guest Marcelle Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 Awesome in it's simplicity, I love it link congestion hmmm isnt that something when there is alot of "volumne" going in the same direction!!...oh goody I love congestion!!! you see for me thats were we all are aiming for to "promote" soul in its widest range of music styles so that it will still be being played when I become a a distant memory... should we all (old soulies) not be jumping happily from the dance floor or record bar... that a scene that we profess to love with passion, is still able to grow.. and cater to all diferent "needs" of punters.. young, old, experienced and novices.. having been to a few venues across the country I love it .. the anticapation of what is going to be played to the "oh I know that there will be certain sounds that will be played here... be it a soul night that finishes at 1 or 2 or a nighter that finishes with the milkman.. be it where i get drunk and dont dance or to where im sober and do dance.. hey the "scene" or my understanding is that it is about being social aswell as music aswell as having fun.. so how about we say to everyone that wants to put a venue on "yippee" somewhere else for me to try.. and if this venue dosnt meet my needs then im sure there will be another one that will. I know this may sound "niave" to some of you that "OH NO® we could do soul to death with all these differant venues" but hey like I care.. JUST KEEP THEM COMING I LIKE VARIETY.. of music venues people ect ect ect... oh Dave soz posted this under yours I hate computors was supposed to post under Gayes.. re "congestion" but having wrote this I am not deleting and writing it again... and you know us "Northern Girls" we do like simplicty even though we have alot to say..... Marcelle (alias Pippy) xx
