TheBigO Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 Have taken on board the comments made by quite a few of you, both here and via email, and have decided that the Main Hall will be, as requested, a 100% Northern Soul room, keeping the Modern upstairs. Now the fun will begin when we play something like Flame N King, Ann Sexton etc in the Main Hall To me, it's 70's Northern

chrissie Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 Funny you should that because there is a Thora liftat the venue!!!! Who knew link Not sure if will make it upstairs all that modern stuff is a bit decadant for a woman of a certain age - but may go and have a look at what you youngsters are polluting your minds with, sure there are subliminal messages running through some of those tracks turning you all of the straight and narrow road.

mischief Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 I thought the Main room was across the board? to be honest I think this is a shame, if you send 70's and crossover up there aswell.. and what about tracks like "Kenny Thomas" Crazy World. "Alice Clark" Don't you care... "Frank Popps" Breakaway ...(when it came out). If they only get played upstairs, peoples knowledge will never expand. I'm sure when people used to go to the likes of Wigan etc... 85% of the music was blinding but now that there taste may have changed, and they have moved on. What would have happened if dj's didn't played the new sounds then in the main rooms. If you had, had to go off to a little room to hear it, would you have gone, or would you have only gone when the main room was stale because you knew everything that was being played? or would you have stopped going to the club all together by then because it all became much of a much? And where do we draw the line now? Heaven in the afternoon.... up or down? giving it all to you ..... up or down? I just want to fall in love .... ? I'll be around......? House for sale...? (sure you can all think of others these was off the top of my head tracks I love to play and dance to) So is the scene going backwards now as we seem to be splitting ourselves in 2 here... surley the Dj should know what to play in the room they are djing at. Or is it the same old story... The dj's...... They turn up 10 mins before there set... then play whats been played... (which can spoil an evening (you can always remeber the track that got 3 or 4 plays in a night)) Or they don't do there home work.. if they havn't been to a do before, they should ask the promoter what the crowd usualy like... (what style goes down well) How many times have you been to a do when the dj plays a type of music and know one dances ...(R'n'B - Modern - Whatever). they then play another one, know one dances.. so change the style... but know you get another 3 or 4 to follow.... Theres nothing wrong with playing across the board, what is wrong is thinking its a great record if they dance or not i'm still playing it.. (records I have chosen are only examples .... wigan was only an example.... but i'm sure you get the picture.)
Soulsmith Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 "If they only get played upstairs, peoples knowledge will never expand." When I want to expand my mind I will pop upstairs & mix with all the other expanded mind people. Which is why I enjoy & frequent 2 room nites. But, sometimes I just I want to spend some quality time with my mates downstairs who don't like modern. They came and paid to listen to northern soul. Lots of them are 40ish and have decided that they do not wish to have their minds expanded further. You only get 1 saturday nite a week & lots of people want to just enjoy their time in a specific way. Having tracks verging on disco played in the northern room is wrong plain & simple. TheBigO, I applaud you. Now if I can only persuade Kev Roberts to employ a few more DJs this year & start his Fleetwood weekenders earlier in the evenings, I'll have achieved this years limited agenda. Col.

Pete S Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 "If they only get played upstairs, peoples knowledge will never expand." You couldn't get more patronising than that if you tried. It's like censorship in the old days, you wouldn't be allowed to watch or read something because you wouldn't understand it and it could corrupt you but the upper classes on the board of censors could watch and read them because they are above all that and they wouldn't be affected like the common oik. What makes you think people want to be preached at when all they want to hear is northern soul? If I went to a 60's room and heard that crap despite the fact there was a modern room, I would complain and everyone else should as well. I know what good music sounds liker and I don't need anybody to try to expand my knowledge thank you, I can think for myself.
Pete S Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 What would have happened if dj's didn't played the new sounds then in the main rooms. link We wouldn't have had to put up with listening to that crap for the last 25 years
Guest taffy Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 But where do we draw the line? link This is why there are 2 rooms if you want to hear 70's come up stairs,if we played 60's upstairs would we have a viable argument then?

Serious question. Roger
Guest taffy Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 Does any brand new music get played at the Plinston upstairs, or is it all the 70s Sam-type stuff? Serious question. Roger link probably about 70% 70's does depend on who's guesting but the room is open to anything from crossover to y2k.
Guest Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 For me northern is 60's and 70's, maybe what i see as being modern is different to what i suppose the scene describes as modern. Modern i disslike is the rubish that came out in the late seventies and early eighties, the manufactured stuff, songs like weak spot - evely thomas and skiing in the snow and the other rubbish in my day we used to have a phrase for these records "plastic". I love the carstairs and house for sale, i never knew these were classed as modern, maybe more x-over but great music i will always dance to, they were always played in the places i went to in the north in the seventies and for me this is northern, anne sexton, fabulous record, again i always classed this as northern. I guess my initial moan was based on dj steps up to the deck, plays some northern , slips in some x-over then the next dj does the same and with the same record lol. I would have thought maybe a slot on the night but to mix it up like that mixes the mood. At the end of the day i would very much doubt anyone would complain if a record was played whether thay liked it or not,its quite easy to live with, i normaly go to the bar, its just the rinse and repeat thing, gets me drunk

I know of some people that dont like the record just because they dont like ian levine.

TheBigO Posted March 29, 2005 Author Posted March 29, 2005 (edited) Bloody hell, you log off for a few hours and we are all at it again :-) Look, as far as I'm concerned things like Flame N King, Carstairs, Sven Zetterburg etc are 70's northern soul and therefore I'd have no problem spinning them in the Main Hall (whilst avoiding thebeer pints from VicG, Pete S etc, just joking lads!) The point is this, it's not censorship but a reaction to the emails and requests that we have recieved. The Ghetto! will still be spinning the great Modern/Crossover it always has and the Main Hall will still be pushing the latest biggies, forgotten oldies and 6T's newies it always has done. Soulsmith Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 But where do we draw the line? link I'm not sure there's any real need to draw lines. If you're DJing in the northern room at Plinston stick to northern soul. When you're getting in right the dance floor will fill up, when you start going 'off message' the dance floor will clear. I dont agree with your earlier views but I respect your love for the scene. And you're a damn fine DJ. Can't believe I said that in public. Col.

Not meant in a disrespectful way, but someone would class say Eddie Billups 'Shake Off That Dream' as '70's Northern', another guy 'Modern' and Pete Smith as 'Sh*t' Maybe if the playing area came under '60's & 70's Northern' that might work? I know that my 'Old Man' used to class 60's as 'Oldies' and 70's > as 'Newies'. When I started going out I was confused (not hard ) about phrasing. Jamie link Yes but only about 5% of the people even like this so called 70's northern. The other 95% don't like it so why can't they just play 5% of it per night? Sounds sensible to me, oh yes it does
Guest j a c k o Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 There's no easy answer Jamie. There's so many grey areas when you have a 2 room format - even to the point of the same record being played in both rooms at the same time on a couple of occasions. I think Neil's got the balance right at the Plinston. Personally I'd like a few more newer sounds in the Ghetto - credit to Gavin Page at the last one for trying. More of the same at the next one I hope. Jacko
Guest Jamie Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 Yes but only about 5% of the people even like this so called 70's northern. The other 95% don't like it so why can't they just play 5% of it per night? Sounds sensible to me, oh yes it does link Where did you get that statistic from Pete? I wouldn't have thought the figure was that high And you usually find the most vociferous are usually the minority, as in most walks of life. But IMVHO, I do think that the sounds that were played at the time, 60's and to a lesser extent some 70's, should be the format stuck to if that's how it's billed. Especially with 2 rooms. So Pete, I agree with you in pricipal, but disagree with your percentages With a single room venue either mix it up or you push it as one specific genre.
Dave Rimmer Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 There's no easy answer Jamie. There's so many grey areas when you have a 2 room format - Jacko link Ask yourself a question, and this doesn't apply specifically to the Plinston or any other two room event, but... How would the punters in the modern room react if I went in and played a Sixties set ? Probably very, very upset to say the least, so why should anyone have to defend themselves for saying Northern rooms shouldn't play modern. Modern rooms don't play Noerthern. No grey area about music policy at all when you look at it from that angle, of course you still have to decide what is northern and what is modern................but the DJ should be able to decide that for themselves if people aren't dancing
Guest dodger Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 Personally I'd like a few more newer sounds in the Ghetto - credit to Gavin Page at the last one for trying. More of the same at the next one I hope. link All modern rooms should be playing new sounds as a matter of course imvho. Trouble is, many of the DJ's booked either don't have or know the newer sounds. Not a criticism of anyone, just an observation. Roger
