Guest alison Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 Top of the heap has to be "I lost my heart to a trout lipped suitor" by Ali N and the Tasteless Wilderbeests (cd only). 90's soul link How come I missed this gem
Guest woolie mark Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 Some of the as yet unreleased Kenny Thomas stuff doing the rounds now is actually mighty mighty fine - it was recorded mid 90s but never came out, tracks like 'Him' and 'Let It Rain' are simply bloody wonderful tunes if you can put aside your preconceptions. For me, the track 'Him' is the finest blue-eyed soul tune ever to be made in the UK. Roger link yeah, the chorus of crazy world is sublime, spose i'm just a bit of a racist then really mind you, i love the old sam brown stuff like "stop" and "kissing gate", so i don't mind white people that much don't think i've heard kenny thomas' "him"or the others, do us a copy please rog wot about next's "wifey", is that 90s - i used to love that (think it might be y2k)
Guest woolie mark Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 (edited) Yes that's right, I'm the man in the know, my first choice would be Murder On The Dancefloor by Sophie Ellis Bexter, it's got that modern 'groove' to it which we all love so much. Steps were a much underrated 90's band who cut some good dance tunes, most of which are deleted now but cd singles occasionally turn up. Top of the heap has to be "I lost my heart to a trout lipped suitor" by Ali N and the Tasteless Wilderbeests (cd only). 90's soul link yeah, i agree with alison, funniest post of the week pete - much more stimulating than it's crap i'm still cleaning the tea out of my keyboard from yesterday Edited March 30, 2005 by woolie mark
Guest Johnny One Trout Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 Also remembered some more good 90's releases. The Movin' On series on Rumour, I think they put out 5 volumes all excellent underground/urban soul with a lot of UK talent involved! Sam link A great set of compilations Sam although it has to be said that they were struggling for quality content towards the end. These were compiled by Raphe Tee of Expansions and were all UK artists if memory serves some great stuff that stands up today IMVFHO i still play volume 1 at home quite a bit actually i just love Guy N'Smone - Overjoyed a real oddball but a great dancer

Jordirip Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 There's probably a reasonable amount but in general I gave the 'suvvern' soul stuff a wide berth in the 90s because most of it was badly produced rubbish with fake horns, Rolf Harris Stylophone backing and horrible embarrassing lyrics, though the vocals were sometimes good in a hairy chested kind of way. Get hold of any back issue of Voices and you'll find plenty that have had plays at 'real soul' venues. Roger link Some of the American 'hairy chested 'stuff on vinyl that did it for me back then in addition to a good few already listed were lp's by; Gene Rice Men at Large Gangsters and Thugs Wil Downing Blu By All Means None of these were cheap productions by one man and his bontempi, but full polished productions. Without going thru my records there were plenty of others as well. There was some great stuff being done that didn't stray into the Swingbeat kiddi territory which became the urban R'n'B we all love today. Jordi

Jordi link You're right that those albums/artists are excellent and proper full on quality productions, particularly the Blu which for me is one of the best complete albums of the 90s (though I'd say the Men At Large veers a little too close to full-on swingbeat). The kind of hairy-chested soul I was referring to was stuff I was stung into buying blind from Dod Rearlove and Dean Johnson, having been told 'you need this' etc. etc. The track that Trev posted up are great as well, particularly the Dorothy Moore 'Daydreaming' but generally the southern albums, with a few notable exceptions, simply weren't very good and didn't stand up against the Gene Rice's of this world. What is 'real soul' by the way? Shall we start another pointless debate? :lol Roger

John swore blind it was Simon White but I think it's you link Sadly it's me!! I found the old photo in the loft, it was taken on holiday in July 83 and thought it would be unfair not to share, especially as I'd seen One Trout's old KRL terrorist pic!! Actually it was smack bang in the middle of my (what are now) sh*t-rare boogie twelves period when I was buying practically everything that came out on a weekly basis from City Sounds in Holborn. Happy days . . . except for the hair . . . and the clothes . . .

Guest dodger Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 Do you have the 12" version of Terry Ronald Dodge? With that lovely piano break? Do you know who we've not mentioned too? Chante Moore! and Keith Washington for that matter Never bothered with the twelve, I just got the CD single of the Terry Ronald. Sounds good 'out' now. And regarding Chante Moore & Keith Washington, their debut albums are probably (for me anyway) No. 1 and 2 in the best albums of the 90s charts. But if you notice the listings, give or take a few on the last one, I've only just skimmed A/B/C and D!!
Guest Baz Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 Steady mate, you'll get people playing that if you tell them it's good. I mean, they play Lisa Stansfield and Richard Darbyshire and Susan Duffy and think that constitutes modern soul. link love the richard darbyshire were talkin about this i swear right IMO a great soul dance record
Guest Rich Posted March 31, 2005 Posted March 31, 2005 Hi Rich, yeah I did forget the other track off the Tutu Jones album but they were off the top of my head. Only me mum calls me Trevor (when ime in bother) link Trev, I'm fine mate - back home these days and pretty stable (I've managed to stay in the country for 5 months now!) I thought we might have bumped into you at Cleethorpes last week - a few of us went up to pay homage to the old place. Are you doing Yarmuf this year - haven't been for night on 5 years now?? I've got tickets but am doing the Ipswich game first so there's a lot of if's, buts and maybe's - that Woodforde Ale does strange things to you
Guest dodger Posted March 31, 2005 Posted March 31, 2005 love the richard darbyshire were talkin about this i swear right IMO a great soul dance record link "Ohhhh, I'm living in a box, I'm living in a cardboard box, I'm a living in a box"!! Not knocking anyone for liking this, I do myself as a pop record, and I'm FAR from being a soul purist, but to me this is the modern soul equivalent of a Wigan white pop stomper being played. There are hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of better tunes that should take precedence over the likes of this and Lisa Stansfield and Susan Duffy etc. etc. and these are typical tunes that are picked up on by northern soul DJ's who consider they can turn their hand to playing modern soul. The big advantage that tracks like these have is that they got a release on vinyl whereas the majority of the great (imo) 90s soul tunes only saw a release on CD so therefore the DJ's with the vinyl-only mentality wouldn't possess them so are unlikely to know them and consequently not play them. Now if 'proper' modern soul DJ's were booked . . .

Daved Posted March 31, 2005 Posted March 31, 2005 Chapter 8 never made an LP in the 90s (last one was '89). Both Anita Baker LP's are essential as you quite righly say - no dancers though! For good blue eyed 90s soul, look no further than Daryl Hall!
Guest Johnny One Trout Posted March 31, 2005 Posted March 31, 2005 Yes Dave i realised that in my enthusiasm i had slipped in the 80's, the Glady's track is probably 80's now that i think about it thing is just after i posted it i lost my connection to the site again and have only just got back on John
Guest dodger Posted March 31, 2005 Posted March 31, 2005 Seem to remember you going off on one of your world famous rants about Normoddensoul regarding Terry Ronald a couple of years back i've got a nice 90's comp somewhere that has TR and Paul Johnson and few other jems on it fairly decent comp as it happens (just can't remember what it's called ) That was exactly the point I was making in another thread about people disliking overplayed tunes but after a long break from listening to them they sound great and the reason they're overplayed in the first place (usually by DJ's with zero imagination) is because they're great tunes and the Terry Ronald is a case in point, as was the Ivan Matias, Al Green and Solo when I played them recently at Ilkeston - I walked in the room, took one look round and thought 'Uh-oh, normodden alert' and started with those three and they worked a treat, despite the ribbing I was getting from one of Colin Curtis's 'Box Carrying Bitches' for not playing bang up to date tackle!!! I wouldn't have dreamt of playing those three or four years ago but now they sound excellent again. It's hard sometimes (as Frankie's mate Sheldon would say) but every now and again a DJ's gotta do what a DJ's gotta do, especially when it comes to playing to a 'lark wotta no and no wotta lark' brigade!!

Guest Johnny One Trout Posted March 31, 2005 Posted March 31, 2005 Oh Roger you will be playing Dee Heron's Total Satisfaction next But ah doo nor whatcher mean lark, and it's slightly sad but pretty consistantly true throughout all the genre's that the majority of people 'lark wott tha no and no wot tha lark' because they are comfortable with it, they can sing along to and dance without fear of making too much of a fool of themselves when it comes to a tricky bit Johnners

John May Posted March 31, 2005 Posted March 31, 2005 And Chris Ballin, for me the best contemporary UK soul vocalist of the last 10 years - the album he did in 96 is another one of the 90s best projects imo. He's on at the Bass Summer Ball this year, don't think I'll be missing that one!! New album due soon as well. Roger link Is there a date for that event....?
Guest dodger Posted March 31, 2005 Posted March 31, 2005 Oh Roger you will be playing Dee Heron's Total Satisfaction next But ah doo nor whatcher mean lark, and it's slightly sad but pretty consistantly true throughout all the genre's that the majority of people 'lark wott tha no and no wot tha lark' because they are comfortable with it, they can sing along to and dance without fear of making too much of a fool of themselves when it comes to a tricky bit Johnners link Not knocking the 'no wotta lark' scenario mate, you're spot on. I felt pretty smug with me'sen for weighing up the crowd as quickly as I did!! And regards Dee Heron, 'fraid not mate, wouldn't touch that one, I'll leave that for Uncle Nice Boy Bobby of Hinsleytown, it's one of his standard plays. I've actually got rough demo tracks from her new album but am forbidden to play them 'out' at this point in time, seriously
Guest dodger Posted March 31, 2005 Posted March 31, 2005 Is there a date for that event....? link I can find out for you, John. Unless anyone else know? I think it's July some time.

Guest Posted March 31, 2005 Posted March 31, 2005 Not finding it might have something to do with it actually being called 'There's No Greater Love'. Or is it 'Special Kind Of Lover' you mean? Top band, two TOP albums. 'Do You Wanna Go Back To When' is one of my desert island discs, bloody awesome. No, I remember seeing one in Gary Dennis' list one time but it had gone But nice one Dodge for letting me know the proper title, does help. I was referring to the 'There's No Greater Love' track, like Johnny, it doubles me up when I hear it. What are the 2 album titles they dropped? Is one 'Do You Wanna Go Back To When'? if so what's the other? Cheers, Sam

Girthdevon Posted March 31, 2005 Posted March 31, 2005 Got a spare 12" around somewhere if you need it. Girf Ah - just seen that Derek has it all in hand
Guest dodger Posted March 31, 2005 Posted March 31, 2005 But nice one Dodge for letting me know the proper title, does help. I was referring to the 'There's No Greater Love' track, like Johnny, it doubles me up when I hear it. What are the 2 album titles they dropped? Is one 'Do You Wanna Go Back To When'? if so what's the other? link The first album's self-titled on Wildcard from 1996 and the second one's got a black cover with green type on it, I can't remember the album title, I'd have to search for it, but the best two tracks 'Back Together' and 'Do You Wanna Go Back To When' came out together on a promo twelve, but both albums are deffo worth getting. There's been quite a few remixes of their track - I'm sure Girfy boy and Derek can sort people out with a lot of this genre, particularly on vinyl. And actually the other track IS called 'There's No Greater Love' cos I've just biro'd the first two words onto my copy of the twelve and also written 'Demo - not for sale' to make it worth more!! Sadly, good ole Juan Trout beat me on this occasion!! Roger
