The Gear We Wore

Back in the 60's through to the 70's the gear i wore was in it's prime. Getting the right stuff to go in to the northern gig's was a part of the scene. My personal favourite's were.

Brogue or Loffa shoes black or oxblood (highly polished)

Two Tone or stay press trousers or faded Levi's which had been boiled to bit's to fade them,

A fred perry white shirt, or Slazenger,, White Ben Sherman with the loop at the back, Black leather gloves (for the back drops) the floor was tiled at the Wheel.

A pair of Roxy Threads cord Baggies (not too Much Width) sewn in crease, Ticket pockets,Loads Buttons in fact zipped pockets.

The Jacket was the best dark brown leather bomber silk lining went everywhere that did creased to bits. Also a good faded Levi Jacket.

And of course the bag to hold the spare clobber to change into.

I cannot remember what the ladies wore perhaps someone can remind me. But the clothes are not as good today as they was then perhaps they were all made in the Uk.

Anyway i reminisce but what did you wear on the Soul scene Oh i still have my old sheepskin Jacket!!!!!!!!

Still got my leather Levi jacket ( jean jacket style) purchased Summer '67 cost 16 guineas. Can't get into it now, But a bit of a collectors item I believe.

i had some of them 42" patchwork jeans, jesus they were that heavy i had to wear a belt and braces to keep the buggers up, round the back of the left leg was a crotch area complete with working zip, one night outside the Casino some knob head DS pulled the zip down, put his hand in, grabbed my leg and said "whats this in here then" - pillock

Oh and a nice bowling shirt to match, shoes were called sellatio's i think, brown and maroon were in vogue, and as Malc said a leather bomber to top it off

Another memory jog, A friend of mine had a pair of brogues fitted with a Doc Martin Sole it started a boom at Smedleys coblers in Bulwell Nottingham, and you could dance in them great.

High waister cords with triple zip adjusters made to measure at Hepworths or Burtons, Solatio shoes with steel heel plates, ankle length leather coat with fingerless 'steptoe' gloves and Dr Who length scarf in winter or leather bomber in summer. Genuine American bowling shirt or those cartoon T shirts that were popular for a while - can't remember what they were called.

Then the Ritz influence - Falmers jeans with Wrigleys belt, cap sleeved T shirt with spotted neckerchief!!! Foster Grant graduated shades for use indoors and a referees whistle. Plastic jelly sandles or Dunlop green flash.

Don't wear nothing but jeans and T shirt these days.

So thats why we left the northern scene and decided to have babys Wish they had left the Fountain alone. It would be great to have re-unions there. When we go to Nottingham today it seems so different to back then, thankfully the scene is still alive and has big as ever.

Got my full length leather on the Underground Market in Manchester, used to go to Tony Justs record stall there. Had a pair of Spencers grey courdory bags tht weighed a ton after a couple of hours on the dance floor.

The girls used to make full circle skirts I don't know if anyone sold them.

I still wear white socks to this day have been since 1976!!

Ben sherman check & plain button down shirts, Crombie & 3/4 length sheepskin coats, Lee rider jeans & Jackets, Levis "Shorthorn" leather jackets, Slazenger v neck pullovers, Burberry macs, lacoste polo shirts, Omega watches.

Era 2 1971 to 1976

Carman Ghia cord trousers, high waistband 32" bottoms, Solatio shoes, Bomber jackets, Long double breasted leather jackets, Hilton bowling shirts, "Cowichan" chunky knit pullovers, Munsingwear sports shirts.

Era 3 1976 to Today

G.H. Bass loafers, Allen edmunds Loafers, Sebago deck shoes, Vintage Levis 501 with selvage, Trickers boots, short Barbour jackets, A2 & G1 flying Jackets, Burlington argyle socks, plus a mixture of stuff mentioned in era's 1&2.

To me the dress code was as exciting as turning up the right records, and still is. Long live Fashion !

Used to be a Tom Bowes in Widnes too think hubby used to get his stuff from there. I've still got my full circle skirt and a pair of trousers I used to wear the trousers were twice the width at the bottom than they were at the waist. When I showed them to the kids they asked if I was anorexic back then. The skirt I had made to measure as my Auntie is great with a sewing machine the length is still exact but no way could I get it round my waist now.

Cant remember where I got my full length leather from but used to go to the underground market in Manchester quite a lot or into Liverpool. Me Dad used to moan about the length of the skirt so I decided to go out in a Mini Dress when the mod era came back round he nearly had a heart attack it was one of them black and white dresses that just covered ur bum couldn't win either way.

Thanks for showing the photo's, I do not have any pic's from the 60s-70s. The faded Denim with the small os turnup was the main line but i have rembered another shirt which i did not wear Brutus the one with the rounded collar,and the Burton made to measure suit was a must, a friend of mine had the largest single vent the jacket looked ripped up the middle with loads of cuff buttons in herringbone cloth. As someone mentioned it was a great ERA for clothes.

So did I...heavy bastards they were too, managed to dig out a pic with me wearing them complete with patch & wooden black fist around me neck, alas I threw these out in 2000 along with my bowling shoes which I lifted from a local alley plus all my other spencer bags.

Full length black leather trenchcoat, sold that to guy from Pershore called Ian Curtis, I thought he was trying to freak me out as that was the name of the singer of Joy Division...too much paranoia, hence no spectating at rugby union games as I was sure when they were in the scrum they were talking about me...lol

As most have said, I ate more than I wore.

If you lived in London (we I dunn like) there was only 2 places to go to get clothes.

First choice was the Ivy Shop in Richmond, they sold brogues, plaintops, BS's, all

the right stuff. Then later, about 70/71 would have been Quincy's, also in Richmond,

into loafers, pringle jumpers, etc. We were so cool we had icicles between our teeth.

No , but I had a jumper with a tree on the front of it , and the word " tree " underneath the tree .....
