I'd say the demo is a hard one Moggy seen loads of issue and people want £150 for it but I would pay less. You can get that other version cheaper Susan Maughun for 10 to 30 UK squids.

I Have the issue of Wade

Just asking the question, also I like the Susan Maughan version a lot, but like a lot of records, Wade was the first version I had heard so thats always going to be for me the better version

:thumbup::thumbsup:

Thanks anyway

I'll disagree on that one.

Have seen more demos than issues.

but yes I honestly have seen more demos over the years.

Gasher

im with gasher on this one have seen more demos recently appearing on ebay and sales lists

but imo the vj demos do look awesome  regards value £100-£150ish dependant on condition

Strange how the value of Two Of A Kind on Ramsel remained pretty steady while Jeanette soared in price. Two Of A Kind is a pretty scarce record and a good one, while Jeanette was a classic cheapie for years.

As to the Vee Jay query I have personally seen far more deejay copies than issues over the years.

there are two different demos of That Other Place - the normal blue and white Vee Jay ones (of which I have one, and I agree they're easier than issues in my experience) and a weird white and black one. I'm struggling to remember who had it - for some reason I think Cliff Steele??? - but from memory it was like a sort of TEC label design - very plain with bold sans serrfi writing. It was the only one I've ever seen and it was apparently proper, though I never knew how or why it was like it was.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if there were a single colour demo of the Wade Flemons single.

Vee Jay was a pretty large concern at this point in its history and manufactured records at several points of the compass. For this reason we see quite a few variations in the layouts, pressing marks etc. of Vee Jay product. Just look at the variations in layout, label colour, matrices, vinyl/styrene quality across releases such as Gloria Jones on Champion and the early series Goldwax 45s etc.

It's quite ironic that the factors which bought this mighty R&B independent to its knees were the cashflow problems bought on by trying to manufacture, distribute and get paid for Beatles records.

yes you're spot on gareth of course. i've never seen any similar VJ demos to this one, though, on any title. you'd think there would be more though of course there should be no surprises as to the weirdness of northern soul collecting.

I collected VeeJay avidly for years...well for the Soul releases anyway! I even had a compilation lined up ready to roll, but I left the relevant record company for another before I could get it scheduled.

Anyway I digress, I've had a few numbers on the plain white demo label variants...the Dontells and Cherylle Thompson spring immediately to mind, and they were also on thick vinyl too...can't recall the pressing plant, sorry.

Never had a TOP on a plain white one...rare...and in my experience I've seen more stock copies than demos of said track, though only just! Frickin' fabulous track...oozes Soul...tremendous lyric, but can also understand that it isn't for everyone being the beat ballad that it is. (Susan Maughn is pleasant enough too.)

  • 2 weeks later...

Always loved the design of the demo...had mine for about 18 years now...and wasn't cheap even then! What does the other one look like?

Kinda like this at a guess, although I'd love to see a scan of this variant of TOP too.

(This Maurice Williams track is quite good, if y'all don't know it..also on Deesu as by the Zodiacs.)

I'd say Issue's are harder than the normal Blue / white Demo, saying that its not all that rare a disc IMO...

PAID £63 Quid for an issue last month so they are out there under the 150 most quote, it was mint by the way..
