Must be one of my favourite records from the late days of The Casino, I never tire of hearing this track.

My mate said to me come over and I will take you to this record shop I have found and the only decent record I got was a copy of this for £4.00.

I got another one on ebay the other week as well, scans below.

yep top tune mate.

Whats it go for nowadays?

Not loads £15 still not hard to get a copy.

The 2nd image posted is the copy I have, what's the difference? Are they both OG or is one a booter?

I just bought it back in my younger days when I naively thought it was what was in the grooves that counted!!

Cheers,

I know the name of Danny Leak but can't find anything on the tinternet by him or about him.

It's Danny Leake from Chicago.

Ian Levines old mate.

Ex 100% Pure Poison!

He produced LJ Johnson "Your Magic's Put A Spell On Me" back in the 70's and all those great James Wells & Barbara Pennington things!

Guess that kinda makes Cheryl Berdell a Tailor Made... if only by influence rather than intent!

As a footnote...

... if you really dig this tune... you really should check out Sandra Feva's "Just To Be Close To You" on Venture.

I covered it as Cheryl Berdell yonks ago cos it's a bit of a ringer and every bit as good!

A TOP TIP (IMO).

On both 45 & the superb Savoir Faire LP.

Top tune Sean, I used to play this out myself, though she's a a very overlooked lady.

There was a plan to compile a Sandra Feva/Richardson CD by those Grapevine boys, I know because I contributed quite a few tracks. Must have been shelved when it all became a bit fragmented.

Oh no it doesn't  . This was the brainchild of Cheryl's then husband and they merely used Danny as the engineer. You'll also note the Tom Tom connection. You may recall in the dark and distant days of Blackbeat I tracked down the gorgeous Cheryl and put her pic on a cover. She told me the story, by then she had split from her husband (this was 1982 by now but the sound was still popular). She also put me onto Tom Tom who was by then working with Phil Collins on things like "You can't hurry love" much to my shock (and horror laugh.gif).

It's a great record, and Cheryl was a great looking girl as well!

Yeh - Remember her being on the cover Steve.

But I'd certainly have thought that all those productions with Levine would have had an effect on the 'sound' that Leake engineered.

Either way, its a top little tune.

The old 'Esther Williams' cover up if my memory serves me right!

I'd never seen the plain EMT label befre seeing Tony's copy (second scan)...interesting one.

The other more common design saw two presses:

The first has smooth labels and clean sharp print, whilst the second had a pitted label surface and slightly blurred/smudged print...and it was these pitted copies that appeared en masse a year or so after the Casino closed, along with the Larry Houstons, if my memory serves me well.

Still sounds fresh to me too, although would've preferred that the producer could've given it some more bass, mind!

Larry Houston is another case in point..........I have the cleaner looking, yet probably less "original" looking pale orange label............the other is a darker oreange/red. Both OG vinyl with different labels???

First scan is the original press. If you have one with the sddress scratched out, then they are the very first the John Anderson found. He then had about 1000 that he put out on the list. They sold in maybe a 500-600 quantity. The rest went back to Craig Moerer when John sold his stock. The unusual plain design is a, as far as I am aware, legitimate re-press and is quite possibly rarer than the original. Because it's a re-press, it becomes less valuable but may still command the same as an original. Larry Houston is a different kettle of fish. It's a different take. Larry went back into the studio and re-cut the track. Although it sounds similar, the giveway is the "Whoa" in the break two thirds into the song. It doesn't happen on the second take. I have a twelve of the original version but have never seen another. Would appreciate anyone else who has one making contact.

Interesting I have got both so I'll have to dig em out. Larry sent me a box of 25, about 20 of one sort and 5 of the other. I sold them all at the Fleet for £2.50 in one night. This was 1982.

I checked last night and mine is the first scan..I bought it off somebody at Parr Hall in the 80s. my other half played it at one of the original Soul or Nothings a few years ago and loads of people asked about it-was quite surprised how many people didn't know the track although I must admit I'd never heard it out in years until Jamie Hartford played it for me by special request at my wedding reception

Nice to hear some background about the record as it is one of my all time favourites

obviously the said record was therefore made to measure just before for the end of an Era Casino nights, it was played here and there after that but god knows why. Just my opinion that its rubbish, but certainly sounds 80s boogie, i'm sure there's a market for that genre of music somewhere. there's no wonder it still only fetches between £4 and £15. Sorry about the Avatar, Winifred Atwell might not of appreciated the joke either. Still not sure why CUNNIE from the mod thingy is allowed to edit soul-source.

The record is a quality piece of soul music.

The moderators are here do moderate the site - not sure why that's confusing.

Ha Ha moderate..get it... Anyway, I am glad you think so. But sorry i don't agree. just played it to my partner who loves all types of music, take into consideration that this is the very first time she has heard it tonight, her remarks were "thats boring", I agree with her.

The LP! the only other way to get hold of these records other than putting your Mom,s high hells and dress on and waiting at the back door for RS leaving, was on a tape recorder live from the Casino.
