Love the jazz dance stuff. Used to see Perry at a lot of clubs - for dancers Dingwalls was a different class.

well ive been amazed at some of the dancers ive seen on these clips, and i thought soul dancers were the best, not anymore i dont, some of these guys are amazing, bloody brilliant !

laugh.gif glad you enjoyed it mate, thought one or two of you on hear would, if you live london or notts you can see it live.. which is a treat in itself, also a great bunch of people... just like the orig northern soul crowd .. martyn

In my experience, every session is a dance comp of sorts...........sure Martin would back me up on that..........if you watch closely, they are always "battling" and taking it in turns..........congratulating each other etc..........great camaraderie.

And arniej.........you are quite right..........I have seen some great NS dancers over the years, but of all the dancers I've seen, these guys and gals are the dogs bollocks!!!

Colin, you really are a philistine mate. Great track indeed. But difficult for your toffee footed style I grant you. Personally, I think the best era of Jazz Dance was the eighties. Dingwalls, Mambo Madness and the Electric Ballroom spring to mind., mind you, we were all a tad younger then.

Following on from an earlier thread, if anyone can point me in the direction of the promo video of IDJ dancing to "Verenceramos" by working week, I'd be eternally grateful.

It's where they draw heavily from the Nicholas Brothers in "Stormy Weather" and features them dancing down a staircase in tailed dinner jackets. I've been after this for some time, and it still eludes me.

I have to say that there are very few Northern Soul/Soul dancers who are a patch on the Jazz Dance guys. A few that are almost in the same league, but not quite, and I say that as primarily a Soul fan.

That said I really like a lot of the music but dont know as much of it as Soul but still really dig it. I particularly love the Jazz Dance classic "You got to have freedom" Pharoah Saunders, that tune sends shivers down my spine everytime. Love Horace Silver,what an artist "Cape Verdean Blues" and "Song for my father" wow! So much of that music is mind blowing. Love all those BGP Jazz comps and the MOJO ones great stuff. Ferocious energetic music. Thumbs up from this Soul fan :g::thumbup::lol:

Can anyone on here point us towards some footage of the "steppers" scene in Chicago in the USA , a scene which musically is firmly based around "soul" music ?

Suggested this to the so called 'dance experts' a while back. Known Perry, Rocky, gerry, Brothers etc for many years...the best dancers around! :ohmy:

:lol: Andy , yes have to agree with you mate , on all counts.. they are the best movers.. im lucky im in both, soul + jazz camps.. theyre only a few of us, that moved over from the soul scene.. worst thing now is how long can the legs hold out, ha. Got all the mojo + b.p.g comps also. love the stuff. love stuff on the SCHEMA label at min, jazz from italy.. martyn

You were hardly expecting it were you Paul? I mean so much of the Soul scene dont even like Soul in the general sense but only their preferred particular genre so am not surprised really.

Yes. Im always suprised by that! I went through Northern, Jazz funk, Funk, Jazz and enjoyed it ALL! Thats why ,i guess, I dont play a lot of 4/4 wigan type tunes, because my life and musical taste, has involved listening, looking and growing. Its all 'soulful' dance music! The music i liked at 15 is very different to what i like now! Makes sense to me. I used to love Dingwalls, Blue note (sunday sessions), Rock City etc. Loved learning to dance to that stuff aswell....F--king great music! And great bunch of people... :ohmy:

Done a few blue note sunday sessions my self,used to like em`sumit`a bit different.

I am into the whole spectrum myself. My ideal night out would be a nighter playing all these styles under one roof.

Yes, that would be a good night!

I actually suggested they look at the Jazz dancers for the 'Duffy' video they just did! They hadn't even heard of that scene. :ohmy: They said they wanted amazing footwork? But ended up with mediocre northern! clueless music video producers! :ohmy:

Oh yes 'Brothers in Jazz'

the dancers from Leeds , that were studying in London in the early - mid 80's.

I was spinning Jazz to these guys, amongst others at London's 'Wag Club' in Soho & 'Dingwalls' in Camden at the time..

Alongside Kev Beadle, Chris Bangs, Sylvester, Baz fe Jazz, Paul Murphy and Mr Peterson.

Also IDJ - i dance jazz , the original London jazz dance crew who were also around at the time.

and of course more recently with Perry Louise and his crew.

Absolutely brilliant times

Utter perfection. That's one of the best dance sets ever!

Ayone know the Jazz dancers in the vidoe of the Style Council's "Have you ever had it blue?" Great track obviously influenced by Jazz dance.

A lot of these guys went to Northern School of Contemporary dance in Leeds and the same in London and started mixing a lot of styles. BUT main influence is the legendary NICHOLAS BROTHERS...the best of ALL TIME!

Paul, take another look at part two, check out the foot work from 1.24 min in till 1.46 then again 3.05 to 3.17, that is truly fast and fabulous footwork. About 263 foot to floor contacts per minute. :thumbsup:

I used to go with Oscar, who was an artist who specialised in drawing dancers, he also danced himself. I brought Irven and some Japanese dancers to an Urban Dance festival in 1999. And the year after Irven, Rob Hylton and Derek! good stuff!

And your Do At The Zoo with the Special Branch mob, first time I ever encountered a jazz room and you were playing, must admit lots of it went over my head but we stayed in there just watching the dancers - Jeff Young and Pete Tong playing soul (although not very well) upstairs, shows you how long ago it was when they were still on the good side! :shades:

When you finished watching the dancers you could walk around a bit of the zoo (reptile house maybe???), it was a bit surreall and I was a bit drunk!!
