Saxafone Posted January 23, 2008 Author Posted January 23, 2008 Perhaps they are appealing to all of the 'Motown' fans who don't like or have even heard of Northern Soul... there's a few of em about.... Perhaps...... Just seems dim at best. Would they not be better served by giving those that enjoy northern soul and Motown the opportunity to attend ? Taff
pikeys dog Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 Cleethorpes is a sell out every year, so no problem there. No mention of Northern in the ad, and not been listed on any of the sites that the Northern crowd would pick up on. So Why dim? aimed at an entirely different market surely?

You'll be able to tell soon enough when the DJ line up is revealed. No Northern DJs... and you're right... aimed at an entirely different market.

Pete Eccles Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 Surely ? So it won't be promoted heavily at the forthcoming Prestatyn event then, OK. Taff Great point, NS or not i'm sure the 'market' its not aimed at will be targeted heavily in the promoting of this event, Pete
Rob Wigley Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 I had noticed that it says the MIDNIGHT HOUR CREW PRESENTS which now comprises of John Poole, Fish and Mark Fletcher. who all know when Cleethorpes is on. However after working with Pontins during the last 7 years I had noticed that they do a lot of "Cutting and pasting" from previous years in their promotional stuff to save time. This original event was moved from Hemsby 2 years ago because we could not get people to travel from the North West, due to the 5 and a half hour journey time. So it may have been moved back there due to the uncertainty over the Prestatyn Sands venue. For what its worth Hemsby Camp has a lovely feel to it, try the Rock n Roll weekender there when everyone is in costume with all the old cars etc. Its "real" Rock n Roll as well which is 90% Black music, which may appeal to R n B fans, there are TONS of US records for sale as well. Tony Middleton was there around 2 years ago as part of the Webs I think ! Rob Wigley (former member of Midnight Hour )
Ady Croasdell Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 Of course that's the exact weekend we're on, but since past dealings with Pontins have been so rubbish, I'm not exactly reeling.
Rob Wigley Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 Of course that's the exact weekend we're on, but since past dealings with Pontins have been so rubbish, I'm not exactly reeling. Oh dear Ady I'm very sorry to hear that By the way looks like they fell out with the rock 'n' Roll lot who have also left the building......
Ady Croasdell Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 Oh dear Ady I'm very sorry to hear that By the way looks like they fell out with the rock 'n' Roll lot who have also left the building...... The Camber Sands 50s weekender was/is brilliant and has been established for many years but I did hear that even they didn't find the Pontins management easy to deal with.
Saxafone Posted January 24, 2008 Author Posted January 24, 2008 (edited) Perhaps they are appealing to all of the 'Motown' fans who don't like or have even heard of Northern Soul... there's a few of em about.... Just had the research department on this one........ It may be a totally different format to the 3 previous Motown Legends events I've attended, don't know how well the scans come out but "2 Traditional Northern Soul All Nighters and an All Dayer" seems pretty specific marketing to me. I hope they don't inadvertently cut and paste that lot or they may end up appealing to the people they aint apparently targetting The original point I was trying to make, was that in a limited "niche" market, to deny your previous customers the opportunity to give you their money again, is dim. Together with others who I know attended and enjoyed the (very Northern Soul focussed) Motown Weekends, we'll opt for Cleethorpes if we have to choose - hence the no brainer tag. Again, just think at best it's dim and Everton got beat so I've got the hump. Nother memo to self, get that cheque to Ady double pronto coz if we don't get in at Cleethorpes looks like we'll be a rockin and a rollin ! Bee bop a lula............................ Pete Eccles Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 You'll be able to tell soon enough when the DJ line up is revealed. No Northern DJs... and you're right... aimed at an entirely different market. Joan, with respect, when you say no northern DJ's do you mean no 'familiar' northern DJ's? Askin as theres many 'northern/motown/club soul/ whatever DJ's out there would love to have this event on their cv, thousands of em in fact, Personally i will (hopefully as not booked yet) be at cleethorpes, love it, and loved it for many years, (think the first Maxine brown was the first time, with Mr coulson, know ya readin this pete ) about 96? and not missed since, highlight of the year for me, cheers Ady And so many stories But still re non NS DJ's how do you know? As said 'with respect' as you may know every name on the line up, Pete

If there are no Northern DJ's... then it can indeed be seen as being 'aimed at an entirely different market.' ... and by Northern DJ's I mean DJ's that are familiar to us Northern crowd. If it is 'aimed at an entirely different market'... then surely the DJ's will be 'unfamiliar' to us Northern crowd... no? Thats all... nothing sinister.
Ady Croasdell Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 I just spoke with John Poole and he assures me it's a family type entertainment Motown weekend thing that some of the advertising staff got a bit mixed up with. It's not aimed at the Northern crowd in any way. So goodnight to this one!
Saxafone Posted January 24, 2008 Author Posted January 24, 2008 (edited) I just spoke with John Poole and he assures me it's a family type entertainment Motown weekend thing that some of the advertising staff got a bit mixed up with. That does make sense having now also seen the ad on their web site for Prestatyn Motown Legends in April. The "branding" of the event under the Midnight Hour badge, long associated with the Northern & Motown events is what led me to believe it was the same event that I have attended previously. I'm just a confused customer ! The midnight hour crew are delighted to welcome William Hicks' Soul Satisfaction to the Motown Legend's weekend! Non-stop music all weekend! Rob Wigley Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 As I said earlier "The cut and paste" brigade at Pontins HQ strike again !! But it does tend to cheapen the "Midnight Hour" branding somewhat, almost abosrbing it into Pontins culture in a way, which is a pity. Rob
