So I went to this birthday bash last night and the dj played - off a cd - a vocal version of The Champion by Tommy Hunt apparently called Soul In The Sun. Did I imagine this? Obviously knocked up last year but has anyone got it/heard it?

Yes.

What did you think of t?

I have not heard it Pete , but when I was told of it at Cleethorpes last week , my immediate thought was " why " .......

Tommy Hunt ? surely Tommy has got better things to put his vocal talents to ? ......

Come on then someone - let us have a clip , and let me know what I am missing ......

No you didn't imagine it.

Yes I've heard it.

I never want to hear it again.

I couldn't hear it properly to be honest

Tommy Hunt was on live in St.Helens last month and whilst he is no longer in his prime, he gave a great performance for his age and I thought his vocal of Champion was very good indeed. I'm guessing the studio recording on vinyl would be even better.

Surely reason enough for me to break out my Keelhauling ropes?

So it is called " Soul In The Sun " is it ? .......

Obviously a " tribute " to the get together in the sun , where TH has been known to do a spot at in the past .......

Is this the " Agadoo " for the post amphet generation ? ........

Reminds me of Prestatyn when the person who runs Soul In The Sun was DJing on the radio and asked for requests to be texted in to him...

"Can you f*ck of back to Tenerife and take your shite records with you" was at least one of the responses.

Dear God ......

I played the clip , and then immediately regretted doing so ......

Whoever put the " record " together , I hope you are ashamed of yourself .......

I am ashamed of myself for listening to it ........

This is strange because I heard Russ Winstanley playing a vocal on his late night show well over a year ago. Like you Pete I thought I had imagined it. Probably because I kept falling a sleep  . However, my recollections of it was that it was alot better than this tounge in cheek advert. I was going to put up a post at the time but forgot all about it.

That said there surely can't be two vocals to this. Not sure what I'm trying to say here other than this has been around for a while. I assumed it was one of Russ's exclusives from back in the day!

Yes, the recording is pretty bad, especially that chorus, but it's the sentiment that counts.

TH is paying tribute to all of the Northern Soul fans who have given him a welcomed income for many years . . . . don't you think?

Or am I just a silly old fool? :shhh:

No ......

Records like " Two Little Boys " , " There's No One Quite Like Grandma " , " No Charge " and " Old Shep " can be deemed

" sentimental " , but not " ( Ar ) Soul In The Sun " ........

Bollocks is a better term ......

We all have our opinions and obviously, mine is a little off from yours. Ho-hum.

Their was a similar sentiment behind the majority of Ian Latrines productions.... and look how they turned out...

Didn't Ian Levine just try to emulate the Northern sound with his own personal twist?

Yes, he also tried to make money out of it, ie run it as a business with profits and losses.

Did he exploit the Northern scene? Yes, he did. But at the end of the day, people didn't have to buy the records he produced.

Did the aging artists that he worked with deserve a chance at making a living? Yes, they did. Again, people didn't have to buy their records. But those that did helped these people earn an income for a short period of time.

So, isn't Tommy Hunt just doing the same?

Did any of the artists actually get paid for that, that was not my understanding which is surely the crucial part of helping these artists, rather than just the respect! Really don't think you are using a good example.

I don't know if they got paid either but I'm certain we would have heard about it directly from the artists if they hadn't. And wouldn't it have been splashed all over the papers if they hadn't. You know what the Americans are like for suing each other over the tiniest of things. Did we see any actual claims for non-payment to these artists?

No, I stick by what I said earlier, even though it might not be the best example in the world I could have used.

I hope it charts for him, I don't begrudge him from trying to make a living from his music in 2008 he's been doing it for many years, it's just as good as a Fatboy Slim take of the music and the music is original backing as against anything generated in a PC.

Well said that man.

I cant understand some of the contributors on this thread, you either like it, or you don't, but there's no need to be disrespectful of a man, who has contributed to the soul scene more than all of you put together. Its called Respect, which unfortunately is very lacking in society today. I for one wish Tommy all the respect in the world as he is a True gentleman.

It's ok until the horrendous backing vocals come in, then it's a joke

Actually, if you think about it, don't you think the backing chorus where they sing 'Soul In The Sun', which sounds like a bad recording, might in acual fact be an attempt to sound like the horn off one of those long distance trains you get in the States?

Pete, please don't send me those pictures of hearing aids.

Think about it and use your imagination, don't you think it does sound like one of those train horns. Go on, admit it, I might be right.

Hear! Hear!

Personally, given the thought process behind it's inception I think it is great! and would give some of these very handsomely paid advertising boffs a run for their money and leave some of them wishing they could come up with a similar 'gimmick'. Although it has not been established as to wether this was done for ultimate commercial release, or just what I look upon it as... a very clever piece of advertising utilising a 'household name' to assist in it's brilliance!! Has anyone seen the recent t.v. advertising campaign for World of Warcraft, fer example... a common demonstration of using recognised 'celebrities' to promote a product, and it is a regular ploy used in all advertising media is it not?

Obviously, as a 'serious' contender for inclusion at venues... well, surely the bouncers wouldn't let it through the doors?

Your right it was only done as a Gimmick for Soul in the Sun.

Tommy wrote the words himself and has put it on a Cd, but its not for general release.

The words reflect his observations of Soul in the Sun
