soulvillemartin Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 Reading the sad news that Mr. Singleton had passed made dig out my only Shrine release, Epsilons. This was comped by Kent and in the booklet it says that this was Shrine´s biggest seller, prompting the company to actually press up another batch at the time because of demand. Is this true, and is there then a way to tell the two runs from each other? TIA, Martin

According to Eddie Singleton, all the tracks were pressed over a period of about 90 days. Only 2500 copies of each were pressed.

Ady Croasdell Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 Strange, so Andrew Rix has got it wrong in the booklet then? I don't think so Eddie probably made a general remark about the 2500 of each, I think it was with reference to a certain batch, not all of them.
Ady Potts Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 As strange as this may sound, there are different presses of Sidney Hall & Shirley Edwards. I've got a Sidney Hall that's Bell Sound stamped & has totally different deadwax markings to a copy that I recently sold that wasn't Bell Sound stamped. The sound was very slightly different between the two as well. Same thing with the Shirley Edwards, it was a while back but I sat here holding both copies & thinking how strange they were different

So would that mean that The Epsilons were made in 2 x 2500 copies? And possibly other releases on the label as well?

Ooo er !!

Talking of strange things written in dead waxs', i've got a Nat Hall with some strange writing on it, says something like 'Russ Smith'...never heard of that pressing plant before

I will also be more than happy to take it off your hands for the paltry sum i sold it to Will J for.. Why oh why did i ever sell it ????
Ged Parker Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 I don't think so Eddie probably made a general remark about the 2500 of each, I think it was with reference to a certain batch, not all of them. I thought it was the last 7 recordings 113 to 119 that were pressed up in lots of 2,500 following the success of the Epsilons. I've always thought this was a bit bazaar as Les Chansonettes 114 is relatively easy and the Prophets 116, Counts 117, Enjoyables 118 and Cavaliers 119 much harder. Though I understand the theory of the latter ones pretty much all being destroyed in the fire at Waxy Maxy's you expect more to survive if 2,500 were pressed. All adds to the mystique I guess

Not neccesarily, I think any estimates from pressing plants are a bit spurious and aren't great indicators as to rarity. Someone might press 5000 and trash 4900 of them a couple of years later. 2500 is quite a high first run, it was probably just a number Eddie remembered from one period in the label's history.
