Guest Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Does anyone remember going to niters at Take 2 in Sheffield ran by the sadly missed Ray Hudson. It was the only building that hadnt been demolished on a hill in Attercliffe I had some cracking nights there in the mid 80s including the night when 2 Fire Engines turned up and suddenly there were fireman all over the gaf. As I remember the downstairs room had a lino dance floor held together by masking tape When I mention it to people now they look at me like I am mad Did it really happen or did I imagine the whole thing??????????

vaultofsouler Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 (edited) Another "forgotten" venue that past a lot of people by.... Two rooms on most events, or was it all of them .... Can't remember which way round it was but one room had a built in dance floor (think upstairs) and the other (downstairs) had hardboard taped together, and to the floor around the edges, to stop it "moving" .... I'm sure "sh*t holes" like this that were "ambiant in its day" would be slated on here these days .... Great in its day.... As I remember the downstairs room had a lino dance floor held together by masking tape When I mention it to people now they look at me like I am mad Did it really happen or did I imagine the whole thing?????????? I wondered when the topic of the soul nights at The Take Two on Staniforth Road in Sheffield , would come up ....... Run as stated , by the late Ray Hudson , the monthly Friday nights at The Take Two were originally billed by Ray as being a " Mojo & Motown Night " , and started in latter months of 1988 ........ I was part of the initial / original DJ team at the TT , along with Alan " Tonight Matthew , I am going to be Hank Marvin of The Shadows " Millington , and Ray himself ....... Our / the original music policy at The Take Two , was the playing of classic sounds from the Mojo era , along with Motown and 60s club classics ...... The decision to add a / the room downstairs , was made in early 1989 , to include " northern " , and was done in order to broaden the musical horizon at the TT , resulting in changing the name of the night from " Mojo & Motown " , to " Backtrax Sixties Soul " ..... There were a couple of all - nighters held at the back end of 1989 , early 1990 , but activities were curtailed because of increasing problems with the licencing of / for the property , and the nights finished in the summer of 1990...... The decor of the room downstairs on the first night we used it , left a lot to be desired , as it had not been finished by the workmen who were plastering it . After much sweeping of the concrete floor and stashing away decorating materials , it was made habitable - but only just ........ When we first opened , the main room did not have a dancefloor - there was only a small carpetted area between the seating and the stage , and in order to give the punters somewhere to strut their stuff on , we dismantled large cardboard boxes amd put them down ......... Whenever Ray and I met , prior to his passing , the TT always came into the conversation , bringing smiles to both our faces ..... Ray always brought up in those conversations , the time when he nearly " sacked " me for falling off the stage , as a result of having too much big mister's pop ....... Not a landmark venue by any means , but a creditable one in / during its' day ...... I will post up a couple of the handbills later , when I ferret them out ...... Sam and Atrhur ran a few nights at Take Two early eighties. There was an allnighter planned but the club owners could,'t get the necessary licence. The Robin Hood used to run soul nights around 1977/78 as well. Chalky Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 DJ'ed there I think Hardly missed any. Downstairs had a taped together hardboard dancefloor at one time. Dust two inch thick on the beams and spiders webs some people never escaped from I've some flyers somewhere I'll see if I can find them. Donm't remember them being all-nighters though, no there was some late finishes.

Guest Decroco Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Got to ad some info to this, firstly the downstairs dancefloor was hardboard that was duct taped up - but did the trick. Angus Oldfield was another one that out on an allnighter. And they were f***in' excellent nights with people travelling from Newcastle, Birmingham and closer afield. Got to congratulate Chalky for the posters(still got mine somewhere). The 13th July 1990 was the night before my 23rd birthday and it was a great honour to be a DJ at all of these events. Allan Millington was out at the Vault of Soul(Qube) last saturday and I keep in touch regularly, he was the one that got me - a young Mod - into N.Soul allnighters, so he is the one to blame for me having the time of my life - TOP STUFF MATE!!!!!!!!!

Started going to the Nether Edge Hall in 1972, every Thursday - 10P to get in, it was all on one level with a bar area and biggish dance-floor.It did what it said on the tin, it was a dance-hall.It was a "normal" night playing all the latest pop stuff but with plenty of Soul (usual club sounds and all the latest pressings), Alan Millington deejaying. By 1973, we all used to meet there to decide the plans for the nighter at the weekend, ie would it be Va-Va's or Leeds Central, where were we meeting and most importantly where the GEAR was coming from. There were plenty of folk there who liked a bit of Soul, but the hardcore travelling week in, week out nighter crowd from Sheffield was Me, Mopsey, Russell Davy, Saunders, Pete Wright,Gus,Richard W,Andy Plax and Shent, with the occasionally appearance from the Old Sheffield crowd (Cass, John Metcalfe, Rogert or Bob Harris). Anybody else who said they "went" around that era is telling porkies! After a few months of Wigan, that figure was probably down to about 4 of us, believe it or not but thats true.I seem to remember Alan going to the Va-Va one week with us. I did NE hall too, although not on the scene in 72, and some of the names mentioned were people to keep away from. I went to a mate of mines one night to find one the guys mentioned showing him how to fire a shotgun. Seriously. Bet you don't need many guesses as to which one.

pikeys dog Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 I went to the Wheel - admittedly in the late 1980s early 1990s when they held the Banshee allnighters there... some strange sights in the queues for that one...
