While this thread has obviously provided a lot of entertainment to those who think there's a war going on north of the border,can I just say for the record that my experience of the Scottish scene is that it is as friendly, as full of committed people and with as much comradeship amongst the regular soulies as anywhere else.Of course in any scene some people won't get on,but that's hardly a Scottish issue,is it ?

I got involved in the scene in Manchester in'82,drifted away in the late 80's and then starting going to Ritz etc again in late 90s by which time I was in Scotland.When I moved to Edinburgh ,I headed to the Spiders Web and found the regulars very friendly,knowledgable and committed to the cause and who had found a regular haunt to enjoy the music we love (60s stompers still do it for me,but would never waste time slagging off anybody who has a different view). Most of all,what I found at the Web was that thing that DJs,promoters,dancers,etc are always looking for but don't always get...ATMOSPHERE.A full dancefloor at the Web in that cavernous cellar is always a real buzz.

Somebody said it is a dump...but surely its the punters and music that make a venue..seem to remember some of the scene's best venues being..well..a bit 'run down'.Might be an urban myth,but do you remember the story about Studio 54 in New York contacting Wigan Casino to find out about their 'lightshow'.They thought it must be one of the best in the world because the Casino had been voted best nightclub in the world in a magazine.

Anyway.I,m off to live abroad for six months soon,but when I get back I intend getting straight back to the Web because,as the old saying has it...you've either got it or you have'nt...and I think the Web's got it...in bucketloads.

THEN I LOOKED TO SEE WHAT ELSE WAS ON IN THERE WEB SITE AND LOOKED AT THE DJ PLAYLIST AND THERE IT IS SIDNEY JOE QUALLS ON EXPANSION ON A DJ PLAY LIST, ITS NOT THAT THE LP IS SO RARE YOU COULD FIND A COPY IF YOU TRYED,

THERE IS SO MANY GOOD COLLECTORS IN SCOTLAND,

BUT IT IS THE SAME DJs THAT PLAY ALL THE TIME,

I QUITE BELEIVE THIS IT WAS NOT SO LONG A GO THAT THERE DJs WHERE NOT ALLOWED TO DJ FOR ANYONE ELSE, THEN A VENUE THAT FINISHED AT 3AM THEN CHANGED TO 1AM BUT THE PRICE STAYED THE SAME,

if a records good and lifts you up, well then it and the person playing it is doing the right thing!

dont get me wroung i can see that someone paying £100's for a record would get pissed of if someone else played a copy that cost £5 but theres plenty of other good records out there! thats why after all these years people of all ages get into rare/soul music. theres always something new.........so listen to the records and enjoy whats being played, otherwise stay on the corner of the dance floor rubbing your chin.

theres no law in music so stop trying to make one...........keep it soulful.

Have been watching this thread from the sidelines and can only say that I am sad to see that some so called soulie from Edinburgh ? is managing to cause so much havock and will feel he has hooked so many people who do care about Edinburgh and indeed Scotlands scene this is exactly the kind of thing that has kept myself and probably others from both attending and dj,ing at events of late.

Hmm interesting point, I live in Edinburgh but have only been a casual outsider on the scene for last 10 years or so and but have to say have learnt more about it thanks to this topic, and I dont mean the infighting obviously going on, more mean the excellent site advertised here and the links to Soul Scotland, to be honest I didnt realise so much was going on. Always did like the Spiders Web as venue, proper Northern Soul venue, but never thought the nights there would be to my interest, but reading Georges site will definitely pop along sometime, dont think I know the guys running so am keen to have a look.

If its any consolation there has always been politics on Scottish soul scene, just like the wider English scene, seems to come with the soul scene!!

Lenny not sure if you are the same guy but by any chance did you go see Maze in Manchester early 80's with free tickets from Tom Wilson, if so I am one of the guys who you gave a lift to!! If so hello how are you doing.
