I Wasn't Defending Bootlegs

Guest Paul

Recommended Posts

Hello,

As the bizarre "SOUL NIGHT DISGRACE" thread was closed before I had chance to reply to Jocko and Brian, I'd like to make it clear that I wasn't defending bootlegs ...I didn't actually consider that debate to be about bootlegs.

As I had said, it was all about DJ etiquette and the financial vale of records and it was "the excessive competitiveness and oneupmanship" that I referred to.

I actually felt sorry for the female DJ because she was getting an awful lot of grief for playing a few cheap records (bootlegs, reissues or whatever they were) at a local event. Is that really a threat to those who are obsessed with expensive records?

As for bootlegs, by the way, I can't really complain about people buying bootlegs or playing bootlegs. People usually buy what's easily available and what they can afford. It's the manufacturers and distributors of bootlegs who I object to.

Anyway, I just wanted to clear that up.

Thanks,

Paul Mooney

Does this mean you don't get tarred and feathered by the madding crowd

I feel for the girl that has been exposed ... I wonder if she was a he and built like a brick shi.....t house if the comment would have been made .

This all smacks of easy target to me , and double standards by many. Let he that has NEVER had an acetate cut or played a re-issue or boot when they were starting out cast the first stone.

Get real we are talking local do here not the bleedin Casino.

oooooooh PMT is a maaaaaaarvelous thing

I don't think the argument was essentially anti oldies or anti bootlegs.

Without the oldies there would not be a scene.

bootlegs- fine for your own use.

However, the whole point about this scene used to be to listen to, dance to etc RARE, as in not widely known, soul music

You had to travel, usualy, to find the Clubs that had the tunes.

Nowadays, with a night starting every week, any one with a 50 box of pressings can be a superstar and play a 'brilliant' set, chances are that you'll find something at the end of your street, so travelling not required.

Ah well,

Tony

Totally agree with you here, my wife used your exact words [casting the first stone] on the topic yesterday, as for the casino, not knocking this guy he was a brilliant dj being from york our representative at the casino was alan rhodes, and he played a lot of emi discs/aka acetates, my mate would often comment on how heavy his box was :lol::lol::yes:

Another way of looking at this is ok say you lived in lets say a little village in the shires and 2 miles down the road a few locals lets say 25 people get together , some know the 10 soul commandments and some don't. I have seen this happen in deepest darkest Essex or was it Suffolk. They had a job knowing the title let alone the label.

One girl pops up and says I can do a spot I have collected lots of stuff all inexpensive , not sure if they are originals I know I have some grapevine issues eeeeeer whats that other one 7's but they are all superb sounds. I believe some of these would cost 1000's to buy as original. We could have FUN and appreciate the songs ! and maybe dance ! one day we may even be able to afford a real one !

Would you stop thier limited supply on the night to hear lets say Boogie wonderland and the such like that between them they can muster up as original 12" recordings ? or would you let her play her oh so so soiled copies of items you are NEVER likely to hear on a Sunday night in the shires with your pork pie and a pint. ?

I suppose you could stay at home and torment the cat

It doesn't warrent the Soul inquestion or Stone throwing in my view.

Now if it happened at lets say the 100 .... then that's a different story if you can afford the time to check each Dj's labels that is .

I would rather be dancing myself and let those with a massive credit limit on their barclaycards worry about it.

And forgive me if it was mentioned on the original thread

The scenario is this

I play a spot lets just say 30 minutes

In that spot I choose to play an alternative copy to the original, as my original along with a few others I play in that spot, I am not prepared to risk as they are worth a few grand each

Someone approaches me and says why are you not playing the original

I just say, "Because i dont want to risk fookin them up, but if your not happy with that, heres my original take a look"

 Is this ok,

I have DJd in the past nothing big, promoted a few of my own events again nothing to write home about, and have been a collector in the past, and I am now a punter so I have a little perspective from every angle

Plus I do enjoy it when folk get a little arsey now & again and the old dummy gets spat out

So Im just doing a bit sh** stirring

Spot on, my sentiments exactly well maybe the dancing is stretching it a bit, the playing of counterfiet records to a dgree I can cope with though the dj whoever it may be would lose some respect for many different reasons.

However if folk can understand where you're coming from Baz are they're people out there who truly understand the passion that is collecting vinyl. Not counterfiet vinyl the proper stuff. The previous thread had some people making out that those that enjoy the serious collecting on our scene are elitist cash rich bigots.

Ive just purchased a record that I don't even like in an attempt to add to the whole listing of a sought after Detroit label, I collect white promos and regulary buy promo copies of issue I already have.

Some out there will know where I'm coming from however I appreciate that most are well within their rights to think I and many others are completely doowallytappo.

Sometimes I look at my bank balance and think that those guys who pay £5 for Freddie Chavez on a boot are the clued up shrewd guys.

Anyone who has been caught by the collecting bug, be it now or in the past, know exactly where your coming from, thats just another part of this rich scene which grips you with a passion so tight its hard to explain & for those of us who have lost that passion for what ever reason, its a heartbreaker

doolallytap ! Never  respected more like  especialy when there no politics involved

There are so many records out you don't need or have to play boots unless you want to keep up with the Big Boys.

I think its a waist of time dancing to boots, but to some people its a sound that they don't know the tiltle or the artist that goes in one ear and out the other and in the mean time makes them shake their legs from side to side. Ok No harm done unless I am at the venue with my tar and fearthes bucket.

Not for me I afriad, keep it real you will get more respect.

I collect singles & Lp's & play out both so if i play a track off an original lp & the single of this track is worth a few bob am i being disrespectful to some one who has paid alot of money for the single?

Are we saying that official re issues are wrong as well as boots as this makes no sense to me.

Lets have the soul police list some rules!

Good to see this thread going some way to redressing a sense of balance.

You girlies just don't understand do you?......Lets be honest here it hardly take a genius to play records that everyone wants to hear and keep a dance floor full all night now does it??.

On the other hand it takes years and years of practice to select certain tracks that will clear a full floor quicker than a Vileda Supermop!, have you even the faintest idea how hard it is to tell the paying punters ALL the information on the records label AND at the same time cue the next record?, have you even considered how hard it is to memorise the term.."And here is another one from the Windy City!"

These are the reasons why DJ-ing is a complicated and skillfull artform which is best left to those who are most suitably equiped for the job, ie those who own a Penis!..

Your job is to just sit in the corner and look pretty with the odd trip to powder your nose along with your mates....

I hope this helps clear the matter up for you!..

Ah teapot me little teapot how frustrating was that to try and answer on a closed thread but no worries multi tasking as we speak by cut and pasting my little love muscle. . . . . .

Us girlies appreciate how very hard it must be for you guys to try and do more than one thing at once, and how it must be really difficult for you to stand in front of all those buttons without pressing every single one to see what they do. But every once in a while we let the weaker of the species have a little play at being grown ups, its not the matrix numbers or the rarest of the rare that gets a floor moving, its not that MR Anal DJ has 1 million and one friends to make it the best soul nite ever, its all to do with ........ are you waiting patiently now.....keep waiting ............ and waiting ....... are you still waiting ............

how do you keep an idiot in suspense??????????? ............. tell ya later :lol:

Just point it out on the advertising and think you'll find the stone throwers wont bother turning up.

Perhaps if clubs be they local or national had music mission statement nobody would get upset bout boots, 2nd issues, cds be they played by chaps or chapettes

Sorry, but I genuinely can't get my head around that statement. How does the format of a tune enter into the equation when it comes to actually dancing to it??? How is it a waste of time, in real world terms? I'm honestly curious to try and understand what you mean.

Good to see this thread going some way to redressing a sense of balance.

There was a real pack mentality / public lynching feel to the previous one.

Don't really think that was the case, having read thru the thread. After the initial mention of the lady in question, it rapidly moved to the boots vs OV in general, with no real refrence or serious derogatory comments cast in her direction, as far as I can see. This thread just seems to be a continuation of the same old, same old, as well!

Right !

Thoughts please ? All be it, it will not change anything.

Avery good friend / respected D.J has given me a copy of a total one off he has a studio slate of.

I would not play this if he was on the same line up as me, out of respect pure and simple !

Should there be a problem with me playing this out any where else ?

He does not have a problem with me playing it and states thats why I have been given a copy. As well as the fact I love the bloody thing to bits !

100% right and the one and only reason to not play it, any DJ with an ounce of common sense and courtesy would do exactly the same.

And knowing your good self as I do, Mister Page, I'm sure if anyone approached you with a problem whilst you were playing it, I'm certain that within seconds they'd be leaving the stage wishing they hadn't said anything!! laugh.gif

You see what I have trouble understanding is how the little man or girl gets beaten and poked with a sharp stick for playing anything that is classed as not being original at small do's- re-issues and unreleased items that are cut to acetate...

Yet some can get a studio acetate as they say ........cut a few copies and pass them around to their selected mates to weeeeeeeeeeeen to the mass, the individuals then get biiiiiiiiiiig love for having something unique ... but fake all the same ?

Pray tell me what is the difference ?

Respect to the comment

A dj wouldn't get my RESPECT just by having a superb original set of records ... all the things above would come into the equasion too.

SELECTION of the type of sounds that I happen to like features very big if you know what I mean.

if theres no problem concerning this dj why does she just tell us all who she is, instead of being shy, i have no personal anymosity to anyone who doesnt conform to my idea of how things should be on the scene, it always gets personal, it would be nice to hear her views, so we know where she is comin from, plenty of people on here disagree about all sorts , i think we are big enough to take it, arent we? ez

i reckon im one of the scary stary folk refered to in middleton lookbacks, couldnt care less......so there u go, im not shy , well i am really
