If records sold shedloads in non-chart return shops, they probably didn't make it into the charts at all. Full stop. This was typical of sales of Reggae tunes and Soul too, I suspect. However, once momentum over a tune gathered the generally radio-friendliness of Northern Soul / Soul tunes might eventually get airplay and subsequent chart placing...a number of good examples listed above. Weren't regional sales discounted in some way too, which stopped a lot more getting higher.

Having worked in a 'diary shop' which later became a 'Gallup shop', the system was pretty much open to abuse. In the days of the diary, you had to hand write every single sold into a 'diary' which was sent off to the chart compilers every week. I leave it to your imagination to work out that if your stock bag supply showed 50 received (in some instances, all Free Of Charge) and 50 entered into the diary, it would mean that you'd (in theory) sold 50 copies that week. Before barcoding, there was very little way of showing that 50 singles sold on a Saturday weren't the 50 that you had claimed to have sold (and omitted to enter 50 other 45rpms in the diary that you had sold to take up the slack in the till) - but it wouldn't have been so obviously. 1 or 2 copies of a desired single would be slipped through the system. I had someone from Gallup come to the shop in the 8Ts and remove the machine and stock bag and audit my returns....the 12" in question was Freddie Jackson 'Rock me tonight' - I had sold over 100 copies in a Saturday - I didn't play anything else all day plus I and several other local djs were spinning it on import before the UK release. The woman from Gallup was stumped - all above board Record label reps would try and enter numbers into the Gallup machine when they popped in the shop for their weekly visit - but you could remove the inputs after they'd walked out of the door Oh happy days..... I do however have Billboard hot 100, bubbling under and R & B chart books and as far as i go there was hundreds of Northern soul songs that charted. They just had some idea of what they brought hopefully charted. But here are some which i not sure have been mentioned star next to song indicates R & B hit as much as hot 100 Sam cooke - Sugar dumpling* Otis Redding - Love Man* Gloria Taylor - You Gotta Pay The Price* Darrell Banks - Open The Door To Your Heart* Robert Parker - Barefootin* The Impressions - You've Been Cheating* Candy and the Kisses - the 81* The Capitols - Cool Jerk* Sam and Dave - Soothe Me* The Fascinations - Girls Are Out to Get You* There is also no listing of any Dean Parrish hits and many other artists who had Northern soul hits even though they seemed popular
Sebastian Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Considering how gritty the tune is, one of the most suprising tunes that charted on the Billboard pop list is Jimmy Robbins "I Can't Please You" on Jerhart. It made #131 on the POP chart and #21 on the r&b chart.
