Paul R Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 hi there could someone please tell me if april siler did a cover version of under my thumb please thanks ........... There certainly was a version of under my thumb by April Silver played around 1974/75 but I always was sceptical about whether it was real or not. Maybe a Soussan recording? IT certainly existed though. Paul

AlanB Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 (edited) It was by April Silva. I think it was a genuine record, not a tailor made, but pop rather than a soul cover of the Stones. She was linked with garage band the Brymers. Alan Edited January 11, 2008 by AlanB
Codfromderby Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 hi there could someone please tell me if april siler did a cover version of under my thumb please thanks ........... i used to have this years ago, greenish label used to be a cheapie, also not very good as i emember
Hakenig Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 I think I might have this on Commonwealth, think it's a greenish/blue label, I remember liking it okay but not necessarily thinking of it as a soul record. Never seen another copy besides mine, and only now realizing there is some soul appeal on the one side! I would be interested to know if there's a first/second press situation, as an old topic on here says that it also came out on another label (Blue Dolphin)?

Guest scratuglia Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 Soembody tried to tell me that April Stevens recorded it!
Guest Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 The oorigin of April Silva on Commonwealth has always been "cloudy". Now over 30 years later it's even cloudier. I've always considered it to be a Soussan boot? Doubtfull it was a "tailor made" or April Stevens because it's a raw production with some attitude on the vocal! Damn hard to find though! Only had two copies in the last 8 years sold them for £8 each. Info the the "Blue Dolphin" 45, would be greatly appreciated as I can't recall ever seeing one. Or any other info on this mystery 45. A scan of Blue Dolphin and details anyone?
Ady Croasdell Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 April's an interesting lady who once visited Ace Towers. She was married to the guy who had the Candix label and had tapes by Theola Kilgore and Jimmy Holiday. Her real name was Da Silva and I think was Polynesian.
Pete S Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 Missed one on ebay about a month-6 weeks ago - think I bid 45 dollars, I was second highest bidder. They used to play this a lot at Keele late 80's, thought it was a tailor made first time I heard it

AlanB Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 (edited) April's an interesting lady who once visited Ace Towers. She was married to the guy who had the Candix label and had tapes by Theola Kilgore and Jimmy Holiday. The backing band on April Silva' Under My Thumb were the Brymers who had been signed to the Diplomacy label by Bill Silva and who had several releases on that label, as did Jimmy Holiday. Their story is told in https://www.kennysinner.com/brymer-article.html ...which refers to the April Silva record but doesn't give any details. The sleeve notes of their recent compilation CD, which includes Under My Thumb, might give more info about UMT's original release. Alan Edited January 12, 2008 by AlanB

Ady Croasdell Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 Yeah Commonwealth but I see what you mean, did SS get her to cut a version or did he just buy a bunch of copies from her. I'll have to get back to you on that one.
Guest Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 Yeah Commonwealth but I see what you mean, did SS get her to cut a version or did he just buy a bunch of copies from her. I'll have to get back to you on that one. Sounds too good for a Soussan production..gritty raw and powerful. No Northern soul jingles or crass ogasn work.. but bizarrely the label resembles his style of "artwork" just need to know if it exists on another label, if not then we must assume Commonwealth is an original or did he find it on an LP or studio tape.?? "Can of worms" this one..
Gene-r Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 (edited) Had one of these on Commonwealth in the early '80s and, I do have to say, I actually regret trading it! It was only in my hands for a few months before I swapped it for an original Bob Relf on Trans-American. As John said, it's sung with attitude - and definitely in retalliation to the Stones' original (just listen to the way she stresses "HE'S under my thumb"!). Must admit, I had often wondered whether it was a tailor-made or genuine '60s cover version. Edited January 12, 2008 by Gene-R
Alan J Graham Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 The Brymers story sounds logical. Several US garage bands covered this tune (the Stones back catalogue being standard fayre), although i don't think i know of another female vocal version. I heard it at soul nights around London / Essex in the early 80's and have always prefered it to the Wayne Gibson version.

And got one as a wedding present from my wife 10 years ago when we was married.. she had problems getting hod of it, even though it was a cheap record. She said at the time a lot of dealers laughed when she asked for it.. and some hadn't heard of it.

He sold me my copy for £4!
Guest Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 (edited) Like most other "old" collectors, I've always considering and sold this 45 as a bootleg.. for £8 because of the origin was from Simon S. And I've never found a copy USA side I just found another copy in my stock this morning and on closer examination it exactly resembles the vinyl type and the label text as the MODERN label. Ironically the label colouring is pretty darn close to the 3 45s that Soussan got Modern to press the instrumental on the flips. Mary Love - Lay This, Vernon Garrett - Turn back & Jackie Day - Before it's too late. Same weird shade of Turquoise. To be honest, on feeling the COMMONWEALTH 45 it feels good, looks "right" and resembles an authentic MODERN pressings. But you know that wouldn't have stop someone using MODERN to press it. Which takes us back to the question, does this 45 exist on another label or LP track? If it doesn't we must assume it's a genuine 45, which changes the value completely. john Edited January 13, 2008 by john manship
Hakenig Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Well, I found my copy (on Commonwealth) here in the States about five years ago in a typical place amongst tons of other 45s. That alone does not make it genuine, but does suggest it might be, I would think.

Ady Good point Ady, no there were not any weird/boot 45s amongst the stuff that I am aware of so maybe it's legit.....I'm not totally convinced yet, but it sounds like a strong case. If a few other people could say they'd found a copy in a similar manner to myself it would be good to know, surely there's a few more copies around (but probably more in the UK then left here in the States)! I await the expertise of others on this board..... Steve - I will try and get a clip up in a short while. EDIT: looks like a clip is already on the site..... Edited January 15, 2008 by hakenig

bro Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 i first heard the april version at keele spun by rob smith ,sounds great out loud ! and took around 6 or 7 years to track down ,got it of butch in the end. played this out alot to a young student crowd and it went down great ,as for being a sousan boot i don't think so myself ,i thought he pressed well known things he could make a buck on ? correct me if i'm wrong. as john said the quality is loud and proud and it looks right. i think i'm right in saying that its not had that much airplay over the years and wouldn't really warrant pressing up in any quantity. as for the blue dolphin release i would love to hear from someone owning one !

That alone does not make it genuine, but does suggest it might be, I would think. This is what I wanted to hear. Because I've certainly never found a copy. SS did ship over quanity of this 45, so I just assumed it was another of his tricks, he did actually boot quite a few records before they even got plays or were know in the UK. He also did find good genuine records and sometimes in quantity. One close examination, it certainly looks to me like it was pressed by Modern, of L.A. label text, vinyl type all fit in the mould. Gotta reavaluate the 45 now, after years of selling it @ a bootleg price of £5 to £8.00 luckily I have found a copy or two whilst rummaging around in unprocessed stock. On playing it again I must say I really like it. And yes, the original Rolling Stones - Under My Thumb - off the Aftermath LP was a huge play in the early 70s, most everywhere.

bro Posted January 25, 2008 Posted January 25, 2008 (edited) I received your e-mail concerning some more info about the recording session with April Silva and The Brymers. The session with April took place in 1966 at Harmony Studios in Hollywood. As you are probably aware, April was about 18 years old and the daughter of Bill Silva (owner of Diplomacy/Commonwealth Records). After we recorded Sacrifice, I Want To Tell You, Every Moment of the day, and Make Love Not War, we were asked to develop an arrangement for "Under My Thumb" for April. She was a very cool young lady and so we layed down the instrumental track. The track has been one of my favorites over the years. I really enjoy hearing a female singing the song. Commonwealth released limited copies of the record. A wee bit of trivia for you! Have you heard the "B" side? it is called "In Cold Blood" and the backing group were good friends called The Stepping Stones. Bill Silva, Al Verrismo, and Mel Simas had a stable of groups that they managed and had them tour around the country. Maybe you have heard of some of the groups. They were: The Brymers, The Stepping Stones, April Silva, The Gaouchos, Gear One, and The Kilts. When on the road we should frequently play the same venues, etc.. All of the groups were from California. It was a great time and a crazy time. Many of our friends later became associated with groups who recorded gold records. For example, a small four piece group from our area use tom open for us. they were called The Sullies. The drummer, Steve Perry, later joined Candy then "Journey." Another friend was from Visalia and had a group called Tom Johnson and the Implicits. He later help form The Doobie Brothers. The list goes on, but as you can see there was an explosion of great music. dick lee BRYMERS.bmp APRIL_SILVA.bmp Edited January 25, 2008 by bro

I seem to recall in that heady Wigan period (by which I mean '74), it was a highly rated and considered more soulful version for those who weren't too keen on Wayne Gibson - I only personally met anyone who played the Stones ONLY because they hadn't got a copy of WG. I was about 17 then, so my recollection may well be defective on that point, as many pop records were regularly programmed, and it wasn't considered unusual. Come to think of it they still are! I am also fairly certain that April Silva was mentioned in the "Playing sounds like;" ads for the Casino at that time. Thanks for the namecheck Rob! RB
