Hammie Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 This is a 70's boot alright.... Another punter who's going to show his collector mates his 'rare' ebay acquisition only for there to be embarrasing silence and the nodding of heads. What p*sses me off mostly about this is the fact that some of these ebay sellers believe they are selling the real article or have they also been conned in the past when they bought these 'originals'. I have sometimes contacted sellers like this in similar situations and giving them the benefit of the doubt, have informed them as to wether they were aware that the record they were selling was a boot and sadly a majority of the time I've been told to mind my own business. This is really frustrating because you know some unfortunate is eventually going to be very dissapointed as in this case. Records I've seen for sale as 'originals' like this that I can remember :- John & the Wierdest (not correct deadwax markings) Gloria Jones - Tainted Love WDJ Styrene copy (but did not have promotion copy not for sale on label) The Ellingtons (Castle label silver with blue text) Judy street (styrene) Luther Ingram (HIB orange 70's re-release) Connie Clark (Styrene but with a lighter yellow paper label and much wider deadwax runout area) Candi Staton (Unity not correct deadwax markings) Tomangoes (Styrene) and (70's Vinyl with no nashville matrix) Trips (Soulville not correct deadwax markings) and the list goes on... You can even see some of these blunders if you look in 'Popsike'
Prophonics 2029 Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Have done, perfectly kosher Shrine thingy Tone are you saying different The guy won Billy Arnel & the Shrine record so don't he know Billy is a boot so don't he know his arse from his elbow.. Are you with me.

Ste Henderson Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Misguided, naive or conned, defo conned and if I was the buyer I would be asking for a refund as it is an obvious BOOT and the seller listed it as an original, how can these ebay sellers get away with it? lack of knowledge or out and out conman? slightly off topic but the same applies to people selling vinyl carvers of rare original records they are just taking the piss and should be banned from ebay but there is also some gullible fools who will buy them.. Rant Over Steve
John A Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 i'm kinda of the opinion that if these buyers are dumb enough to spend big money without the knowledge to back it up then they deserve to get ripped off.Dont get me wrong, the seller is way out of line listing it as an original..But buyers SHOULD KNOW!
Dean Posted January 11, 2008 Author Posted January 11, 2008 This is a 70's boot alright.... You can even see some of these blunders if you look in 'Popsike' I think with some there's room for doubt, John & Weirdest for example, some boots of this don't you have to hold 'em up to the light to check the colour opaque. I've been caught out in the past and was very thankful to rivolino2 for an email once. I watched a Johnny Hampton - Not MY Girl go through a few days ago for about £150 - £160, wasn't sure about that either, either a bargain or someone ripped off. I don't recall that one claiming to be an orig which this one boldly did, and the Johnny Hampton was listed as the other side which I think raises suspicion like -"oh I don't know what I'm selling". I was initially curious because this appeared obvious and wondered if I was missing something. I did send a message to the high bidder with about an hour to go out of compasion but didn't hear anything. I know it's not unusual but there does seem to be more money than sense. I'm off to get that box of 70's boots from under the bed now. Dean
pikeys dog Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 The seller is in the U.S. so there's every chance he's unaware of what an original looks like... If they don't have the boot guide, and only have Manships price guide to guage prices by then they are bound to make mistakes.
Modernsoulsucks Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 I saw that Hampton 45 and did wonder why it wasn't attracting higher bids so I assumed that some guys had contacted seller and requested matrix details to confirm "Nashville" stamp or absence thereof. There was this identical bootleg going around at one time so hard to tell from the picture if original but it does look like mine [with the Nashville stamp] and I got my copy from N.C too on a buying trip years ago. Someone may have got a bargain if everybody was like me and couldn't be arsed to contact seller. ROD
