Guest outonthefloor Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 A PLEA TO ALL YOU PROMOTERS OUT THERE....... PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DONT ADVERTISE YOUR DO'S AS ......7.30 (or whatever) TILL LATE !!! Unless I'm missin something and everyone knows what that means I find it totally frustrating. I'm looking around for venues to go to and I like to go to a few new ones every so often. I'm not afraid to drive a few hours for a good nite out but the finish time plays a big part in my decision on where i go. I'll drive 2 hours for a solunite that finishes at 2.00 but it may not be worth it for a 12.00 finish. Then again if there is a niter close by then i might decide to do the soul nite n head off to the niter afterwards. Am I the only one who finds this a pain?? Helen XXXX

Zed1 Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 (edited) agree; normally "till Late" does not mean late, that we are accustomed to, probably means 12 Agreed..... Perhaps there should be a 'Glossery of Terms' available with regards to Flyers, ie... 'Till Late' = 12pm. 'Across the board' = same old. 'Top Dj line up' = You've never heard of any of them. 'Large wooden Dance floor' = might well have been in 1927 when it was fitted. 'Large well lit Car park' = 2 miles away next to the burnt out Nova. 'Friendly atmosphere' = the Locals from the bar join in the dancing for the last hour to take the p*ss.. Edited January 2, 2008 by Teapot

Totally agree Helen, as I have two hour's to get to any soul do, I want to know what time it end's I dont want to travel 2 hrs, get there at 10.00 then have to leave 12-1.00 and then drive back home another two hrs, not worth it. I agree with Tabs' and "ignore it" Willie

Helen XXXX I know exectly what you mean on this one, never more dissapointing when you have chosen a venue for the first time, drive a couple of hours only to find the bar shuts at midnight. Or as you say if there is a do on that finishes early i.e. 12 you can always plan to go on somewhere after if you want to, without having to leave while the night is in full swing. I know Martin hasn't put a finish on Blue SKies for the 11th but I think as it is a small pub do and starts very early (6pm) this is acceptable and I only hope it finishes earlier this time as I have a party to go to on the Saturday , rolled out at 2am last time, it ws a very long night and trying to drag Martin off the decks and out of the door proved a little bit of a problem and we weren't the last to leave, the "suits" were still partying Our local Pub NYE do was advertised as "till late" again only a small pub do and it is usually the same crowd every year and the bar will stay open as long as people are drinking on NYE and it would be impossible to put a finish time on this because if you put a finish time of say 2am and the crowd thin out they would find it difficult to shut the bar earlier.............but it's never happened yet . Guest Bearsy Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 the posh bit Jokling aside though, advertising of an event is for me a very important issue and if im not sure i get in contact with the promoter and if i hear what i like i have the choice then but if i hear nothing then there is no choice, Dont take nothing for granted whats on the flyer always double check if there is a lot of travelling involved i know i do, there you go Bearsys first tip of 2008 nothing posh in Gillingham Helen

Thats what i mean tho...in this thread we already have a couple of varying assumptions as to what 'late' implies. Sometimes when i pm promoters n ask them what time the do ends they say 12 but we never get outa there till at least 1.00!! etc etc... I have been pursuaded by this in the past only to find that the last tune is played at 12.00, the lights go up n then people just stand around talkin for about 40 mins while the DJ's pack up!!! so yeah they dont get out till 1 but ...well u know.... I don't think its unreasonable to ask promoters to put a finish time on their flyers/Ads. and then put a qualifying comment after it. Its interesting that some people have said they wouldnt even bother if the flyer just says 'late' so surely putting some kinda finish time would be to the promoters advantage? Helen XXXX

Helen XXXX YOU ARE BANG ON THE NAIL THERE GIRL! Pete Griffin and I have been experiencing this ourselves recently. We put our local event on for no other reason than to keep the fire burning in our little town. For our local Soul fans and Scooter boys (and Girls). When it is a local thing with just all your mates (till late) will always do the job. The problem IS when folk make the effort to come and see what your up to (from far and wide) and then the evening finishes at midnight..............THATS NOT FAIR! We have realised this in the last couple of months with our Soul n Ska nights in Deeside. And that is why we are looking for a local venue that will keep us happy until at least 02:00 (hopefully later?) Just when the place is getting busy......the bloody place closes? And you are right, organisers should put the right times on their promotion! Then everyone knows the situation! "LATE" is just not a good enough description! Pete and I will find a venue in Deeside that suits our needs for our local thing (later bar, later dance etc)......But you are - BANG ON!!! Good point.....well made! PEACE

Spacehopper Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 i also think late means about 12....and the fact that a lot of people wont bother is probably the reason why promoters use it instead of the time !!

Helen XXXX Throughout my endeavours as a promoter , I have intentionly steered clear of using " till late " on advertising , as I know it can - and will - mislead the punters that the night will go on until the early hours of the following morning , when it will finish between at either 11.30 PM or midnight , and more often than not , will be 11.30 PM ...... The only places that should advertise the term " till late " should be mini - markets and local convinience stores ...... Malc Burton Edited January 3, 2008 by Malc Burton
Dave Morris Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 Bournemouth Uni goes on til 2am.Last orders around 1.30/1.40.Would never advertise "til late".In fact at our last one in december we started bit earlier thanks to Moldie getting here before 7.30. Dave.

You've forgot 'Fantastic sound system' = a couple of clapped out decks on a trestle table 'Resonably priced beer' = fugging expensive 'Best facilities in town' = ripped seats & sticky carpet KTF Baz WHO SAID OPTIMISM WAS DEAD . Late usually means in terms of the bar closing time where i come from. But then again do Northern punters drink enough to care when the bar closes?.Its all about the music int it?.I would have thought if a nite closed around 12/12.30 it would be ideal to then move on to the many, many events all around the country that finish later, therefore gettin the ultimate fix.Not everyone has the time or inclination to do all niters every weekend
Reg Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 I'm always peeved when the music stops at midnight, the bar shuts and the lights come on.....until the next morning when I'm relieved I didn't stop out any later The 2am finishes are always the worst for me However, for some reason I tend to pace myself far better at an all niter...whenever I go to Broughton Wings for example (which does have an early finish but also does make that very clear on fliers etc) I always seem to cram in more wine than Floyd on a good day

Mark B Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 till late 12.00pm bar closes 11.00pm late 12.00pm very late 2.00am/3.00am mini niter 4.00am nighter 7.00am some maybe 8.00am well thats my take on it. i find it annoying that nighters start at 8.00/9.00pm these days they should start at 12.00pm and go till 8.00am like they used too. mark
Joefromupnorth Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 First time ive aired this view in public so to speak , what really peeves me is the 7:30/8:00 start to a soul night. We always try to make the start to get a worthwile number of hours in.....sometimes having driven for two or more hours. Sadly its an hour or so later before a place has anyone in,maybe everyone thinks "nobody will be in until 9:00" !!! then, and does anyone agree with me here , ive heard some great sets played the first hour or so...and many times ive heard this said " they should have been on later"........usually someone who the promoter/s maybe don't see as good enough to make way for later on when " they " need to be at the decks. Those late in have missed the set and maybe something a little different to what will be played in the peak hours , then with a place just really getting going the same crowd almost to a man/woman are starting to make their way home again......they must have had three hours at most !!!!.........was it worth making the effort to come out ???..this happened at a soul night i had'nt been to before over christmas and a couple of hours almost drive to it , finnish time was billed as 1:30 and by 12:30 the place was all but deserted !!....some of these niggles had me start travelling two and three hour drives to nighters as you know you will get something out of the travel.........glad to say this malaise does'nt effect all soul nights but i think certainly the majority from what others have told me. Main reason imo is the music for most is secondary to drinking and not the other way around as it should be.......back on the thread track now lol......i do agree a finnish time should be there on any promotion to help you decide to attend or not.

Would agree Mark but your key phrase I think is "Used to"........ many people don't want to attend a full niter like they did in their younger days so a 3-4am finish is about their limit, also from the promoters point of veiw the majority of people on the scene only attend the average '8 till Late' type night and a 12pm start would exclude many of these paying punters. Great Post and spot on imo. I agree with the fact that sometimes the early sets are excellent and missed by many. You often hear Dj's say they tried out new stuff in their early spots. I'm a real 'get there early' girl as i love the first hour plenty of room on the dancefloor and a place to make 'camp', and no P**S heads!!! I know we are getting older but i do question why people would arrive at 9.00 and leave at 1.00 its a mystery to me but it's their loss. 100% agree that things were better when niters started later and i don't accept the argument that we are getting older. Of course we are but 'we' are not the only consideration, how conceited that we should change the whole scene to suit the aged!! I'm no spring chicken and i love a niter so there are some of us left and younger models snapping at our heels, Barnsley was a perfect example of a younger crowd coming through and they deserve the experiences we had. Good points made in this thread i feel, hope promoters consider them. Helen XXX
