i've just started reading young gifted and black the history of trojan records by michael de koningh and in there the following information was published edited abit to save space

in 1960 buster left coxsons employment to set up his own sound system

blah blah blah

the object was to play records which would get the crowd moving , the more exclusive the sound the more likely it was to gain the support of the crowd , coxton dodd was playing coxsons hop and coxsons shuffle.

these were actually us r&b discs whos labels had been blanked by willis jackson (later for gator ) and harold land ( san diego bounce)

these downbeat exclusives kept rivals at bay , with no indication of the real title even if you could get cllose enough to see it the others would have to find more exclusive sounds to fight back

so it seems people were covering up old us records on the other side of the world where they probably havent heard the term northern soul
