One of the things I always liked about the scene was that it was always a bit underground & slightly cool.

Dance competitions posted up in You Tube like the one below are ruining it!

https://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=0w1RiX8JbCg&...feature=related

Viewed one way its hilarious, in another way its a bad joke.

All thats missing from that circus ring is the promoter to come in dressed as a ring master and a clowns car

Parp parp.

I've always hated them. Invariably fixed and the best dancers never win. Mind you more often the best dancers don't enter.

always thought the dancing to a tune was a personal expression ......rather than the "look at meee look at meee" attitude of this lot (even if one of the dancers is a member on here )

Gotta agree that I've never been a big fan of them & consider them to be intrusive at any soul event, we do usually have a dance competition at our national weekender here in Australia but it's over 3 days & it's not in the same format as it's not a dance off. Whichever state holds the event has 3 or more judges who then decide the best male & female dancer, also it's not necessarily the best dancer either just the ones who put their heart & soul into their dancing over the weekend, this works much better for us.

I actually was the Adelaide 2002 national weekender winner & I would have never entered a dance off.

As for the girl dancer, she's off on one big style...lol

Thats what i hate about the soul scene........proof why dance comps should be banned... :D

I've just watched it again just to make sure I wasn't imagining what I saw  and part 2 and 3 just to really make sure

Tricks, acrobatics or whatever you want to call them are well and good, if done right and in step with the music but when just done willy nilly to try and make someone look good (allegedly) they look ridiculous. Some of them should be thrown off the Tower.

And who picks the music for dance comps? they always choose the worst records possible! :D

Ban 'em!!!

Me too. Its the theatrical equivalent of a car crash.

that's why i feel they should not be banned!!!

they should also NOT be taken as a guide to who is the 'best dancer' because we all dance how we feel, and that's good enough for us so who gives a shyte what others think but..........

it is pure entertainment, either admiring someones personal interpritation of the music or..... having a good bloody laugh!!!!

lets face it, she was funny and it has given loads of people a good laugh (those who don't take it serious!).... just saying :D

this reminds me of ian levines sister, does anyone remember her going to blackpool mecca? she went a couple of times and when she hit the floor it was like theyed plugged her in to 25,000 volts :D

Was gonna say ban e'm but now iv'e seen the Blackpool video featuring Billy Elliott & Bet Lynch I think every event should have one every month.

Get Richard Searling on the Strictly Come Dancing panel for the next series.

Who gives a flying f**k who is a 'better' dancer than anyone else, except the saddo that wins? Invariably, as has been stated earlier, its only the knobheads who think they can dance, who enter anyhow. Reminds me of all the talentless no hopers that embarrass themselves on the Xfactor, thinking they can sing! The really good dancers never set foot near a dancing comp: Chris Holmes, York, is one of the best dancers I have ever seen, no fancy tricks and acrobatics, just immaculate footwork and timing, perfectly sycronized to the tempo and style of tune. You can watch him for hours, and never work out how he does it. he seems to never repeat a step, yet there must be some 'formula' he dances to. 35yrs later, I've not cracked it yet. Now that's a dancer!

I've always wondered this myself Chalky.

If they have to have them at all... wouldn't one 'up'... one 'mid'... and one 'in between' tempo record be more of a judge of who can dance and can not?

My reckoning is that a good dancer should be able to dance to any tempo record... and not just the 100mph stuff.

Although whether this lot can even dance to that is a matter of opinion.

Can you imagine Goldilocks trying to dance to the likes of Buddy Smith or the Magnetics 'Count the Days'...

Why oh Why !

As a skinny 16 year old I used to throw my self everywhere, soon learned how fookin stupid it was wanker.gif

Love watching Jazz Dance Comp's but they are a little different.

Always thought they spoiled the night on our side of things and was not fair on the other paying customers always killed around an hour

I think the height of dancing competitions for me , was when Dave Godin judged the one at the first " Harlem Shuffle " Sean Hampsey and I staged in Rotherham , back in 1987 ......

I told Dave five minutes before it was held that he was to judge it .....

The language Dave directed to me is unprintable ......

So you didn't laugh then?

If she's 'brave enough to dance her own style in front of several hundred northern soul fans'... then a few old fogeys laughing at her efforts won't bother her in the slightest.

Although to say she was 'dancing' is being more than a little kind.

No doubt I look as bad as that every Friday and Saturday night... but without the blonde hair... or the camera.

I thought they were " Bridgets " that she had got on ......

I will have to check again  ......

Anyway , this sort of dancing is a disgrace : You simply would have not been allowed to jig around in this manner in the Tower Ballroom in my day ......

A little off thread sorry !

I mentioned the jazzdances on a thread previously.....IDJ, Brothers in Jazz, Floor technicians...great dancers and it was a serious dance scene. I used to go to Dingwalls and the Blue note etc in thelate 80's early 90's. They actually dance TO the music...unlike the lot in the Blackpool comp!

Dance Competitions on the Northern scene should be stopped now...very, very sad to watch! As for the music, very, very sad to hear!ha!

trying to free the tight thong that is obviously chaffin' on her piles

Dawn surely as it's musical it wouldn't be a thong but a G-string? And by the look of it, it's well wedged up the old "Double G Clef", now that'll bring a tear to your eye & make you throw yourself around like a firecracker in a tin trying to disengage it from you Apollo docking port :D , if you know what I mean?? Ooh, the thoughts just sent a shiver up me spine & made me squirm in me seat. wacko.gif

Take care, be safe & remember "Bridget Jones big knickers" for dancing ladies,

Spot. :D

ps. Trev, calm down, you'll blow a gasket or implode & we're only just into Jan m8, remember it's only a poxy dance comp.

and did the guy in the black vest kill all the ants in the end? laugh.gif

He was good, wish I could still move my feet that fast, would be a close call between him and the lad in the red top as to who was the best.

i think she is brilliant :shades: - You cant say in one breathe people should be able to express themselves to the music as they wish, and then slag them off for doing so in the other. She was obviously enjoying herself and made people laugh at the same time - so all good thumbsup.gif . I always enjoy watching dance competitions but I can imagine that peole who take the scene, dancing etc too seriously would frown on them.
