Phew, Where did that year go?

Exactly 12 months since we did the last 'Top Tips' thread... so here we go again!

Here's your opportunity to tip the tunes in your box for future greatness over the next year... or simply list any number that you'd like to recommend to other Soul Sourcers.

You might be a DJ with that tasty unplayed, unknown, hardly played or semi-known stuck in the back of your box that you'd love to play... but haven't yet got around to it.

You might be a collector, sitting on a tune that you know, if it got into the right hands, could become massive in the next 12 months.

It could be an LP track that, for whatever reason, has never been given the recognition it deserves.

It might be a tasty 'B' side that, given the right exposure, might just become a monster!

No need to post sound clips. Just let us know what you've got that you think deserves a plug in the coming year!

As a quick lookback, the Top Tips for 2007 will appear on the next post.

So come on. Look at your box and let's have your top tip (or tips) for 2008.

Thanks for taking the time to dig up last year's tips Sean.

Some interesting reading.

Just looking at my 3 tips.

1, Boss Man - You're Taking Too Long - Don't think I heard it played once but still convinced it will have it's day. Quality 60's Soul by non other than Kenny Gamble under a pseudonym I believe.

2, Satisfaction Unlimited - Don't change The Subject - Turned into a monster on the Crossover scene & was even deemed worthy of an inclusion on the Sean Robbins Sunday Soul Selection compilation.

3, Jackie Moore - Do Ya, Got What It Takes - Your old Clifton Hall spin that I tipped for a revival. Did hear it played a few times in the last 12 months & not just by you & me

Right then, onto this year.

1, Jimmy Jackson - Footsteps In The Shadows - Buddah.

Got 70's Northern monster wrote all over it & can still be picked up for under £10.

Just watch it go & then put another 0 on the price. Buy it now.

2, L.T.D. - Never Get Enough Of Your Love - A&M.

Another forgotten 70's gem & also still around for under a tenner. Just so nice.

3, The Creators - Just You & Me - RCA.

Expect to pay more than £10 for this one as it ain't that easy to pick up & demand seems to be rising. Noticed Dave & Bri Pinches are including it it thier spots just lately. Who put you onto that guy's :D

4, Dazzle - You Dazzle Me - De Lite.

The 'left field' choice. Totally mad Boogie track from 1979 that got a few play's by Sam & Arthur around it's release in 1979. Every time I play it out it always seems to attract interest.

Also in demand with the Euro Boogie collectors so not that easy to get now & the price seems to be climbing.

Posted

Played this out myself Baz a couple of times about 2 years ago.... had mixed interest....

Didn't realise it was going up in value or that it was becoming hard to come by....

seems to be Mark had nowt but good feedback re this disc ,saw a battered one on ebay go forover 60us,hope it still is quite acesssible TO BE HONEST,think its a great tune myself.

Just love these tunes

JANICE SADDLER & JAMMERS - MY BABY'S COMING HOME TO STAY

LONNIE YOUNGBLOOD - SWEET SWEET TOOTIE

BOTH ON THE EAST COAST SOUL CONECTION CD RELEASED IN 2007

POSSIBLY 2 TUNES OF INTEREST

Posted (edited)

Great Thread! I recently discovered some of my old notebooks going back to the 70's, where I used to make 'tips' of what I thought would be future biggies... as well as noting who was playing what & where, along with various other snippets of info etc - all interesting stuff, and prompts me to throw a couple of toons into this arena:

21st Century 'Shadow Of A Memory' (Noel)

I know Arthur is currently spinning his alternate version acetate of Minnie Jones (which I feel is better than her issued cut on Sugar) but this, for me, has more substance and, I feel, would have more appeal on the dancefloor.

21st Century 'Coming Right Back' (Noel)

Flip to the above track, and couldn't be more of a contrast! A great tune in the style of traditional 'Northern Soul'. Stomper from start to finish! From the first instrumental bars, through the distinctive vocals and into the chorus it just grabs you and moves you along nicely in tandem with the infectious beat. Certainly one for the dancefloor.

Jimmy Phillips 'She Belongs To Me' (Bumps)

A truly masterful and infectious slab of class R'n'B. I rate this so highly!!

Deon Jackson 'Nursery Rhyme' (Atco LP)

Another R'n'B tune that automatically attracts attention and drags you onto the floor to partake in the delights of it's awesome production, with all you could want from a brilliant dancing record. Lyrics are somewhat 'nonsical' so this could never attract a huge price tag. Although I play it off the album I believe it did find a 45 release on Atlantic.

Anthony & Delsonics 'I Never Had A Girl' (Emerge)

This is the flip to their brilliant 'Every Time', and is a more 'full-on' tune. Actually the official 'A' side, it's driven from start to finish by a blend of brass and drums with a guitar/drum instrumental break. The music is over ridden by the vocalist telling us how pleased he is with his gal, which contribute to complete this 45 being a dancer's delight.

Well, that's something for you all to chew on...

On the cheapie front I'm going to be pushing - Cash McCall - I'm in danger - Checker and on the rare side Mel Williams - You Groove my mind - Chipper (has the same backing as Johnny Barnes - Nothing without your love, if you know that ). I also think that Lee Williams and the Cymbals - A Girl from a country town - Rapda is going to pick up increased plays and value!

Lets see!

Beverley & Duane -Glad I got you.........Kicks thier rare one into touch, with NS dancefloor appeal.

Ike Strong - Since i Lost My Baby..........Sacriledge to some, soulful perfection to others..gonna go tho' for sure.

leroy clofer 'mr. big man' (rosemont) picked up one myself cheap on ebay early last year, a small quantity then turned up but they were literally snapped up in a few hours, mostly by funk collectors but i still think this has potential to appeal to the soul crowd, and according to adam leaver it went down a storm in the soul or nothing room on NYE :P
