Ficklefingers Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 (edited) Flip is 'I'll be waiting" yes? Which was also the flip to the Claire Records release, which has the far superior (IMO) 'Love Plays Funny Games' on t'other side! Don't understand how this doesn't attract a price tag the same as the Resist 45? I've only seen three copies in the past 15 years!! Wheras I've seen four copies of 'Black Wings..' - two of which were acetates. Comments welcomed... Edited December 31, 2007 by FickleFingers

There was a handfull of copies of "Love plays funny games" that went through eBay in the last eighteen months... all mint all from the same seller.

pikeys dog Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 Don't suppose you got a link? would be interested to follow it up... Cheers, Fingers The auction page would have expired by now. It was a UK seller from the South (possibly Brighton) who had sourced them in the US, old store stock and they sold for around the £300 mark. He sold at least three through eBay, and had at least two more as I was offered one as an under-bidder (about the third down the list of bidders). I declined as he was very vague about how many copies he had when asked, so I put two and two together and came up with a 50 count box. He may have only had the 5, but i wasn't willing to risk a Dream Team situation.

Personally feel that, even if only a 25 count for eg, price should really have been more around the 150 mark. In the wider scheme of the collectors market place even a 50 count could soon be 'devoured' and the price tag be seen to settle to a more reflective amount... say around the 200/225 mark. Always rated this 45 and felt it was never given the exposure deserved... maybe time to get it on the decks again
Soulcarp Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 sorry for butting in' i recall about ten years ago rumours were that some one was in canada and recalls seeing about 30 in a deals shop all sign iv'e tryed to watch these filter through to no avail

Chalky Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 (edited) don't think he is am i alone in thinking this is complete over-rated. it's not crap but.... like you say Dave, not a crap record but not a great record either. The 70's version is crap though! Edited January 3, 2008 by chalky
Mark Bicknell Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 As I don't play Ebay anymore infact the last time I sold anything on there would have been March/April/May 2006? just to clear up a couple of points....lol Bigd66soul here...lol firstly it was a little longer than a year ago possibly closer to two or maybe even three years ago that I sold this, when I asked around the general opinion was that it was a rare record and two grand was the suggested asking price? I think I offered it 'set sale' at the two grand first asking price? then maybe £1500.00 however I actually ended up selling it for £1300.00 directly to a collector not a bad return on a record I paid £50.00 for around 1990/91 from Bradford based DJ/Collector Nigel Parker, swings and slides this record collecting lark, prices move, increase, decrease etc. hope this helps and good luck to whoever wins this one from Pat, two decent R'n'B sides but one I don't miss anymore as I moved away from that R'n'B hard edge sound a bit back and put the money into other tunes. Regards - Mark Bicknell.

Dave Rimmer Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 am i alone in thinking this is complete over-rated. it's not crap but.... No you're not. It is crap, it's Country Blues and should never, ever, ever have even been shown to a pair of decks, never mind played on them. Some records you love with a passion, others you hate..............this is one I hate

Some records you love with a passion, others you hate..............this is one I hate I am with you on this , Dave ...... Everyone to their own taste : If a person likes the record - fine ; if they do not - fine : I do not ...... If I had come across the record prior to its' " exposure " , I would have given it a wide berth , simply assuming it to be a country record by the name of the artist , and the title , and would have disgarded it , as it was not a record of the sort I was looking for ..... BLOODY GREAT 45............IMO BRING BACK THE 80S Yes it was a Gary Spencer spin, I sold him it in the 80s after finding it in L.A. We have recently sold both of the discussed Hayes Cotton titles. "Black Wings" we got £1134 @ auction for 03/05 "Games" we sold for £400 in 04/07 Both 45s have a very individual style which I like..

I've got lost somewhere here, are the negative comments about 'Black Wings..' or 'Love Plays..'???????????????

good angel Posted January 4, 2008 Author Posted January 4, 2008 Any body know what price,Hayes Cotton made, last look it was £1460? Kev
Robin S Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 Yes it was a Gary Spencer spin, I sold him it in the 80s after finding it in L.A. Surely also a big Keb record at Stafford..always reminds me of Loz Bennett - she used to love this.
Chalky Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 whatever any of us think about Black Wings it is great northern (I'm not fond of the record too much myself) and it does fill the floor every time it's played

Marc Forrest Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 whatever any of us think about Black Wings it is great northern (I'm not fond of the record too much myself) and it does fill the floor every time it's played Thanks for that Chalky...couldn`t hold my breath anylonger A fab 45 IMO. Don`t play it out anylonger myself as I think it had its day and is now back to the "rest room" but how someone who intends to like BLACK music can say this ain`t a Soul / Black music 45 really strikes me. However you can`t argue about taste thats for sure.
Marc Forrest Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 so I put two and two together and came up with a 50 count box. He may have only had the 5, but i wasn't willing to risk a Dream Team situation. Fully understand as I was a victim of that dreamteam situation myself back in the days (thanks again by the way..) but even a 50 count box would have hardly made it a "dreamteam situation"...just think about how many Jackie Days we have seen since that West Coast find several years ago. Did it affect the price ? No. Marc
Marc Forrest Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 Which was also the flip to the Claire Records release, which has the far superior (IMO) 'Love Plays Funny Games' on t'other side! Comments welcomed... Both flipsides are different mixes. Having both 45s I must say I tend to like the Resist take a bit more. Marc
Realpeoplesmusic Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 I'm not a massive fan of Hayes Cotton - Black Wings but i did hear Micheal Robinson play a garage type version of this off an acetate which was awesome, I'm not a massive garage fan myself but this was quality, anyone else heard it?

Yes, as it was once for sale on here by a fellow soulsourcer (btw I am still waiting for that CD ). Its nice but in now way better than the original IMHO. But still one would think how they came to record it..

Not seen many of these but what I have seen were acetates. A guy called Jim Randle from the Manifesto Soul Club had one in his sales box for it seemed like an eternity. Dunno if he ever sold it though. Not seen him for a long time..

I had one, my mate Pete Griffin on here had one and we don't know who had the third. The guy actually selling them was alerted to the thread on here and actually came on confirming he'd bought a collection and there were 3 copies only and not a boxful. Perhaps one of the mods can dig out the said thread? Personally I like both records! Rich
pow wow mik Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 There were 3 copies only,. I had one, my mate Pete Griffin on here had one and we don't know who had the third. me! eventually anyway. My favourite is 'I'll be waiting' personally, but i heard a different mix of 'love plays...' on an acetate that I thought was a lot better than the Claire version. i dont like the Resist 45 but Michael robinson played a different version of 'black wings' nye in London that was belting, but maybe a bit garage sounding for soul tastes.

Hi Mik, That's the acetate that I offered for sale on here some time ago, evryone that hears it says it's great but there wasn't a lot of interest when I was flogging it! Adam.

Adam. well if it's the one i heard i wouldn't have been interested because although the 'love plays..' version is better, the 'i'll be waiting' side had no drums on it, or they were very very low in the mix. but if you prefer the 'love plays' side it was better imo.
