Steve G Posted March 19, 2005 Posted March 19, 2005 Am planning to go to New York for the first time can anyone recommend any good dealers/second hand shops for funk and soul....addresses and info would be greatly appreciated cheers link Not anymore - you'll have more fun sitting on the end of the platform at Penn Central watching the trains roll out The shops in Greenwich are to be avoided - records are more expensive than here, and if you show any interest whatsoever in anything they immediately think it's worth a lot of money....Downstairs Records used to be good for browsing, but now gone, in my first two visits of 2005 to the "Apple" I tried to find it again, but it's gone. Around 4th Avenue on the East Side there's a couple of places last time I was down in that part of town late last year....best thing is to look in Yellow Pages and see what looks interesting, and is NOT located in Greenwich Village....

Are you sure its gone? This was a great place for finding goodies years ago! They still have a web page so I would be suprised if the actual shop premises has closed down, where would they put all that stock? regards Paul

If it still around it must have moved again....
Guest Posted March 20, 2005 Posted March 20, 2005 Have to disagree. There are still plenty of good places in NYC to find good funk & soul (and of course disco!!). THE SOUND LIBRARY is arguably the best 2nd hand shop in Manhattan. Frequented by the Hip-Hop crowd, they stock lots of original soul, funk, jazz & latin LPs. Not many 7"s though. Can be pricey, but I've found some great bits there over the years. ACADEMY RECORDS. Good selection of stuff in this 2nd hand store. I picked up a 12" booty of Tommy Stewart's "Bump & Hustle Music" last year for $4. All sorts of stuff in here. Lots of other stores, but many tend to focus on disco, so may not be your bag. Have at the link below - it has details of the two shops above, and many more. https://www.recordcollectorsguild.org/recor...s/new_york.html A
Guest Posted March 20, 2005 Posted March 20, 2005 Oh - forgot to add.......a trip into Brooklyn could be worthwhile, as there are (apparently) quite a few lesser known spots that can turn up some good bits. I'd try yell.com and search in Brooklyn. A

A link I've been going to NY regularly in the last few months - mainly for a day or two at a time, which has meant not a lot of time for record hunting; but I have to say I haven't been finding anything at all of late....certainly no Slyvia Striplin albums! Perhaps I am getting jaded....

A link Cheers, I think that's vaguely the sort of area I was eluding to in my original response....as I did find a couple of shops down that way late last year. Do you agree on Grenwich? - the last time I went there I was in a shop and the guy detected my accent and snapped "no northern soul" without working out what I might be looking for. He was in the process of selling "Fish ain't biting" on 7" to some heavy Def Jam type DJ guys for $50 or something ludicrous. At that point I made my excuses and left.

A lot of the stores in the East Village are more specialised to modern Black music - disco, funk, soul, hip-hop, jazz, latin, reggae. If you can appreciate stuff outside the typical Northern/Modern Soul boundaries as well, I'm sure you will find something good. As I tend to go for a lot of disco, it's great for me. Saying that though, I buy anything decent - soul, funk, latin, jazz, hip-hop, house and even rock. BTW, here's a link to The Sound Library's website: https://www.soundlibraryrecords.com/ Andrew
jocko Posted March 20, 2005 Posted March 20, 2005 (edited) I've been going to NY regularly in the last few months - mainly for a day or two at a time, which has meant not a lot of time for record hunting; but I have to say I haven't been finding anything at all of late....certainly no Slyvia Striplin albums! Perhaps I am getting jaded.... link No not jaded just you have most soul records known to man I believe! I have only been to NY a couple of times and I thought it was good for albums etc, yes pricy but then the day of cheap records is almost over I think we agree. I found that for a little bit less than you would pay here you would return with a decent amount, although you are right in that you are not going to get the big 70's albums as Americans are now chasing them. I also had the comment "no NorthernSoul" here, inoldies museum, but again if you are prepared ehre you will gert some nice general soul stuff (ballads etc). For West Village I assume you mean around Bleeker St etc, which I actually thought was okay, again pricy but enough interesting items. For disco 12" (the real stuff not the Bee Gees etc ) I think NY is good but you then have to compete with local collectors (Dance Tracks etc) but for Prelude/Salsoul type stuff it is there if you look around. I did have a couple of adresses in Brooklyn for shops allegedly full of soul but was told in our hotel not to go around these areas. Who knows. Even if you dont get records its not a bad place to be hangin out is it! Cheers Jock Edited March 20, 2005 by jocko
Boogaloo Posted March 20, 2005 Posted March 20, 2005 Hi For my pennysworth, if you're happy just hunting New York is great. Some of my recommendations have already been mentioned, Bleeker St and around that area. Lots of little stores around lower east side 13th/2nd. Picked up a few nice bits of Northern last year and plenty of Jazz/Motown/Latin. Two tips: Don't tell anyone you're into Northern Soul as they are wise to the prices - 'gospel soul' works great for me. Keep looking. You never know who's just sold/bought a new collection - happens all the time and you might be in the right place at the right time. Was in San Francisco when a guy came in with a box of mint RCA demos!!! Good luck Warren
Guest Posted March 20, 2005 Posted March 20, 2005 a friend mentioned house of oldies and colony to me but unless theres anything better ill stick to those two as he said they were quite good with wants lists etc.......unless hes already cleaned them out!!!!

The funny thing about "no northern soul" was that it was assumed that was what I wanted merely because I spoke with a London accent.
Ernie Andrews Posted March 21, 2005 Posted March 21, 2005 Iwas in New York for First Time February- They all have Manships guide under the counter so It doesnt matter what you say you are looking for they still check. I diid get a few pieces but nothing spectacular apart from Ann Perry orig Ohio Players LP- I got about 20 12" and Lps Did get a Esther williams twelve inch- You gotta let me show you which goes for a fair bit these days. House of oldies is expensive but you will pick up some good lps there/ Academy records is good for LPs but very lttle singles although they have a shop in Brooklyn I didnt get to. Apparantly the best way to get some stuff is to wander the streets looking for garage sales( i got a fablous Joe Simon lp with a wondeful track called "Dreamin" for $5 or their is a big fair in April sometime. Bleeker Street is probably the best area and in the same street as House of oldies their a modern soul shop but the power went when I was there so couldnt listen to anything. Good Luck great place to meet people. I had a fabulous week there
Guest lifeandsoul Posted March 21, 2005 Posted March 21, 2005 There is a record fair from time to time at the Holiday Inn on something like 50th between broadway and maybe 8th. I've been a couple of times and managed to pick up a few things, mainly albums cheap. There's a flea market at the weekends on 6th Avenue I think somewhere around 20th - if you're lucky you might find something there. I picked up a pile of 45's one time, nothing mega but for example some Colossus stuff, Jean Dushon, gene Chandler on Chess or Cadet or one of those, some Jackie Wilson. Condition though was a problem on some of it, some perfect as always. Sorry precise details of location are a bit sketchy I might have some more details at home.
Guest lifeandsoul Posted March 21, 2005 Posted March 21, 2005 Oh almost forgot. It would be remiss of me not to mention Bondy's Records, 38 Park Row (near Brooklyn Bridge/Pace University) for new Independent Soul product, if thats your thing.
Guest Posted March 21, 2005 Posted March 21, 2005 There's a place on Essex and Delancey run by a guy named King George, an old school Hip Hop guy. Great LPs and usually a big selection of 45s too. It seems to be pretty overlooked by most that know NY. If you go make sure it is some time after 1 as he opens kinda late. You can take the J, M, or Z to Essex and should be able to spot it as you come out of the subway. Unless he's changed it his sign is something like "Vinyl Wanted" written on it, kinda ghetto. I agree on the Sound Library as a recommendation, its a great spot and usually a good deal too.
Guest Posted March 22, 2005 Posted March 22, 2005 cheers guys hopefully some of these places will turn up something good!

Guest Posted March 22, 2005 Posted March 22, 2005 There's also an annual record fair, run by WFMU (I think) every November. A monster of a fair, all the heavyweight dealers go to this one. Mind you, not much use for March/April......
