Guest
The inclusion and acknowledgement in the programme , of the influence of NS into the culture of dancing , was given in my estimation , a more creditable treatment - and understanding - of " what " the genre was all about , than it has had previously in documentaries of a similar nature ........ Interesting to see the still photographs with Arthur Fenn and Clarky in them ...... 30 plus years on , and Arthur still looks the same ...... Barry
I think we are the only scene that have ever actually properly danced in the truest sense of the word, don't you think Malc? Dictionary defintion: to move one's feet or body, or both, rhythmically in a pattern of steps, esp. to the accompaniment of music. Look at the defining genres over the years - you have the Reggae/Ska clockwork movements, the Rock 'n' Roll hop or reliance on a partner thing that they had, The Mod/Mersey Beat/60's Pop thing (Shing a Ling etc), Rock (??), punk (right!? ), House (...and people had lost the basics by this time). A quality Soulie dancing is still to this day awe inspiring, I know you know, I'm not teaching you how to suck eggs - I'm just taking the opportunity to revel in the way we dance. I have taken many a newbie out over the years and they have found it jaw-dropping, which it is. The only inbreds that take the piss are the usual uneducated, insecure, jealousy riddled expendables. Back on subject the "Dance" series has been very good. Surely you did not expect any musical documentary programme such as " LMIHP " not to feature the spoutings of Dutch Elms ? ...... A good programme overall , but sadly spoilt for me , by the b******s that man speaks ...... If the Queen was to give knighthoods for services to bull***t , Dutch would receive one without a doubt ...... Guest
Northern dancing is descended from The Lindy Hoppers..The greatest expressionists of all time.. The Lindy Hop evolved in the U.S. in the late 1920s and the early 1930s , and was an " organic " fusion of many musical styles that were allied to dances that were popular during those times , predominately jazz, tap and charleston ...... The are many characteristic similarities between Lindy Hoppers and the dancers on the NS scene ...... paultp
Just watched this on the BBC player and as people say, much of it is rehashed from previous documentaries. Russ's lucosade comment is priceless though. One of the reasons that there isn't much footage of Wigan is because (I think) it was only filmed once. From people that were there at the time most I've met claim to have been on the balcony shouting for the lights to be turned off. Does anyone now regret not being on the floor while the filming was going on? Just interested, not taking the p*ss or anything. Cheers Paul Link to comment Social source share

Think you are right......... I was there for the 'This England' filming, but also remember a nite around a year or so later where the lights stayed on for the first hour-ish.......no idea why though?... From memory live acts around then were... Edwin (of course), Martha Reeves, Jnr Walker, The Showstoppers, Ann Peebles and IIRC Tommy Hunt, unless it had something to do with the above?.. Also I seem to recall 'Sad-Cafe' playing live prior to a Niter starting, and thier 'Gig' over-running, but again if this was the reason for the above I don't remember. I remember watching "This England" with my parents when it was aired - how embarrassing was that? Very similar experience but watched it with Eddie Hubbard when it was first aired. Like a lot of people I didn't want it filmed in the first place. With hindsight it is the only footage available, to my knowledge, so not neccessarily a bad thing in that respect.
