Funky Si
All you say about Maconie is true, though (imo) he is still more soulful than CC. As previously stated he was from Wigan and went to Wigan amongst other Northern venues. As an NME journalist obviously he developed other musical tastes. He is a huge fan of the Smiths. I think you're just bigging him up because of his funkyness Si. Seriously though, I can't see him championing the finer points of the Fascinators, but who knows.. Hey some 'All Singing All Dancing" is better than none. As most folk will probably be jollying it up NYE, the real debate (perhaps) will happen after his show. Lastly, not a huge fan of the guy personally, but good luck to him and I hope it goes well. Fair enough! Its the funk that gets me listening to CC, not the chance to hear the finest rare soul .... That's why I hang around on Soul Source, after all. So thanks to you & all the other regular posters on here for the fantastic tunes you have introduced me to this year. Cunnie
Well, what can I say. Listened to Craig's show last night & he beat Stuart Marconies shows by a country mile. Got to say that SM is a far better DJ but CC has obviously got a far better ear & passion for the music & it showed. Also gave some very good info on all the tracks played & kept it interesting. Actually listening to a BBC stream of Craig's last Funk & Soul show as I type this & he's just played Flowers - For Real followed by Lamont Dozier's version of Going Back To My Roots so he obviously knows his stuff. Guest TONY ROUNCE
A very good and pleasingly varied playlist IMO - and not just because of the amount of Ace and Kent releases featured - striking a good balance between the relatively underplayed and the bleeding obvious. Well done that man... Link to comment Social source share

chrissie
Listened to the show yesterday afternoon while nursing my hangover....thought he did a great job and it was a very listenable show The constnt KR/Goldsoul plugging was a little irritating but apart from that it did what it said on the tin QoFxx Link to comment Social source share
Richard
What I was told then , that the playlist was NOT compiled by CC , but by a well - known and reputable figure on the scene ...... Actually this happens all the time on TV and Radio, very few who work in those industries actually present a show on a subject they love. At least CC/his producer/researcher had the forsight to research for the show, could have ended up with the very worst of Northern Soul Link to comment Social source share
Guest
Well, what can I say. Listened to Craig's show last night & he beat Stuart Marconies shows by a country mile. Got to say that SM is a far better DJ but CC has obviously got a far better ear & passion for the music & it showed. Also gave some very good info on all the tracks played & kept it interesting. Actually listening to a BBC stream of Craig's last Funk & Soul show as I type this & he's just played Flowers - For Real followed by Lamont Dozier's version of Going Back To My Roots so he obviously knows his stuff. Below is the playlist of the ASADAN show from last night copied from the BBC website. Guest Darks
I received a telephone call back end of last night , from an well known scene figure , wishing me HNY , and in the course of the following conversation , I was asked if I had heard CC show ..... It must be apparant to most people that CC has assistance from researchers/mates. Most big network broadcasters do or in the case of some radio stations have computer generated play lists. I've listened to CC for a few years now since obtainig a DAB radio. Whilst some of the new funk instramental's are not to my taste he always plays intresting soul stuff you don't expect to hear. Recent examples are Lee McDonald "I'll do anything for you" remix and Mario Biondi "This is what you are". as well as the recent reissue things such as the Main Ingredient and Barbara and the Browns. Anyone who plays anything by the Main Ingredient will always have my support in a fist fight . At the end of the day CC plays good music and thats all I ask. Guest ScooterNik
After falling in through the door at around 1.30 I thought I'd better give it a listen so I could try and defend it the day after..... No need, job done, but could have doen with less of the 'coming in at number 96 in the top 500....' though. Well done Mr Charles. Link to comment Social source share

Guest WPaulVanDyk
He did a good job and put Stuart Maconie to shame. But even if he didn't compile the list he played it. Surely any DJ who has been given a song list might sit and say i hate a lot of these i can't play them. or they just do to please us. he does a good job on radio 6 too so i see no wrong Link to comment Social source share
Mark Bicknell
I think some of you are missing the point here, as a form of entertainment the show was good for what it was, as for Mr Charles being a true blue Northern Soul fan and collector then he's simply not and I would suggest if he was asked he would confirm that. Speaking from someone who has been around radio for a good few years now I wonder if you realise how difficult it is to present a show? and how much work goes into it? ok my show's come across as being slung together and they often are but I record and produce myself, one thing that does get me through and other's who present on the specialist stations is a passion and knowledge of the subject and the music, pretty much any professional actor, presenter or media type could string a show together of some broadcastable quality given a script and a producer and I think this is the case with Craig Charles, the music was good, his presentation was first class but where it fell down for me were the links and it was very obvious to me that he was reading the information rather than actually knowing anything about it first hand, nothing wrong with that as it padded the show out, pretty much all mainstream radio is scripted it has to be it's the way they work however the edge specialist stations have is the freedom to let the presenters express themselves with a non scripted approach and a free hand to play what they want having faith in the presenters, knowledge, passion, collection etc. Very easy to big up the scene and the music with links saying this is worth a grand, two grand etc. quote the record labels etc. but a very different thing to actually understand the feeling of owning such records and being part of the scene. Mr Charles is however a professional actor/entertainer and he and others at the BBC and other companies perhaps have the edge over the specialist stations in terms of presentation and application of presenting first class quality radio but they lack any real passion, understanding of the subject, yes they may include it on their shows and yes they may have a genuine like of the music but the rare/northern soul scene is as we all know a very complex animal and to really do it justice you need to let the people who know it's workings, history etc. to be in control and perhaps given the chance to present such a show? as a few hours entertainment Craig Charles did the scene proud on New Years Eve but I wager all the tracks were taken from CD and not from his own personal collection but it was still fantastic to hear Elbie Parker, Earl Jackson, Jimmie Raye etc. played on BBC national radio so well done to Mr Charles I say. As it's already been said here fantastic for Northern Soul to be even played on mainstream radio and the BBC at that, he played numerous requests so people it would seem responded to the show in advance of the broadcast, I would imagine that the audience was pretty impressive...so how about a national weekly specialist show BBC? Regards - Mark Bicknell. Link to comment Social source share
Guest WPaulVanDyk
How about who could fill in his boots for Stuart Maconie if they had to. Would anyone new be of use. i mean i would love to get a job on Radio as a DJ and what if it was me who was coming to do a show on Radio 2 which is take over Stuart Maconie i am sure most people would moan and wonder wh. But if you can play the music and sure talk about what you know or if not tell them it's from the liner notes inside the cd. I wonder if it was the BBC Liabary providing the cd's or maybe Craig Charles had some collection of CD's to use. Link to comment Social source share
