Guest
ARE YOU SPEECHLESS COS YOU LIKE CRAIG OR BECAUSE YOU WISH STUART WAS DOING IT?? CHRIS No ..... What I meant by being speechless , was that I was rendered so , by the " job description " lavished on CC by the Radio Times , and the statement of " the pick of Northern Soul PARTY tracks " ...... I have a bad feeling that this term " Party " will catch on in some circles because of this , with future advertusing for venues bearing the sub - heading " featuring the best in Oldies , Motown , Rarities , Crossover , Modern and Party " ...... As for SM , I have time for him as a broadcaster and presenter ; his work on the " A S , A D , A N " programmes in the past was highly creditable ...... Pete Eccles
What gets sadder by the day is more and more folk concerning themselves with what others may like or dislike, if for any reason anybody doesn't want to wear spencers, or doesn't want to listen to a particular music genre, or doesn't want to buy/read any particular book, or doesn't want to tune in to a particular radio show (of which i have no interest) then the solution is simple ....................................... Guest
I have become a big fan of Craig because he champions all black music and his show is so entertaining. He also includes live recordings of acts which is brilliant - Gwen MCrae was a recent visitor to the Beeb studios - how many shows does that happen on!!!??? You never know what he is going to play from deep to funk to Northern to new recordings which is what I enjoy. He is also a big supporter of Ace/Kent. He really shocked me when he played a track off the Willie Walker & Butanes CD which I issued a few years back - and I didn't even send him a copy!!! He also did a cracking show on Liverpool's Mardi Gras club - air brushed out of Northern Soul history LOL - which included interviews with DJ's and some of the local acts who played alongside the US greats who would then go down the road to play the Twisted Wheel or vice versa. Guest rachel
Having listened to Craig Charles' BBC6 Music show, I think he may actually have more of an idea than Stuart Maconie, although "specialist" does make him sound like an "expert" which I would perhaps dispute. Can remember when I was first getting into 'Northern', setting a tape to record ASADAN on New Year's EVe - got home about halfway through it and checked that it was recording, to be confronted with 'Inky Dinky Wang Dang Doo' and some awful instrumental whose name escapes me at the moment.. nearly put me off for life Link to comment Social source share

Richard
I agree, hang Craig Charles from the nearest tree for having the front to host a programme on national radio playing soul music. How dare he have the cheek to encourage the editor of the Radio Times to describe him as an "specialist" in a musical field he cannot honestly know as much about as all of us on here combined. Perhaps the editor should have said "No nothing Craig Charles presents a night of crappy old Soul music", that would get the punters tuned in Can't believe that some of you are taking the piss out of a show that may just get a few extra punters through the door at your soul nights. And at a time when vitually everyone is saying attendances are down and what will save Northern Soul in the future, surely a programme that presents Northern Soul to a wider audience should be encouraged not lambasted. Funky Si
Craig Charles show on Radio 6 is one of the best music shows on the BBC at the moment, so what better to put on at 1am on News Years Day. I don't suppose he'll be trying to break any new discoveries though. So, my question to all you top DJs out there is what would your first three be if you had the chance to do Craig's show for him? Remember, there are about 50,000 parties tuning in to your show so they can all have a bit of a dance. In every one of them there are a couple of people bragging to their mates that they "used to go to Wigan" and going on about a record they used to have that's now worth "at least a grand". Is it the ultimate chance to put all those divvies in their places, or do you go for three ultimate crowd pleasers and your one chance in a lifetime to put a million people on their feet, moving to the tune you chose? Craig Charles is clearly a bit of a bad boy, but his show is consistently good, and he has interviews on his show too... This year alone, he has had interviews with the Average White Band, Cymande, Marlena Shaw, Ian Wright, Gwen Macrae, Mavis Staples, Cyril Neville, Isaac Hayes, Tito Lopez, George Clinton, Keb Darge, and Bernard "Pretty" Purdie. He certainly isn't a chin stroker though. Anyway, I know there's a lot of Maconie-ites out there, but how can you support a man who has a prog-rock show as his main output on Radio? And just look at his BBC CV - Stuart Maconie BBC page If he is such a big Northern Soul fan, why doesn't he mention it? Kraftwerk???? Nick Drake???? Russ Abbott???????????? Not exactly the choicest cuts of rare Detroit soul of the mid- to late- 60s is it ..... Mind you Craig's CV doesn't exactly ooze NS credentials either I suppose .... Craig Charles BBC page. At least he didn't pack his Xmas show with Stockhausen and Steeleye Span though .... and his show from last Friday is well worth a listen - the first thing he mentions in his review of the year is what a great one it has been for Kent, and he even plays a bit of rare soul. Simsy
While it is of course very flattering to be mistaken for Craig Charles, he is not me. All you say about Maconie is true, though (imo) he is still more soulful than CC. As previously stated he was from Wigan and went to Wigan amongst other Northern venues. As an NME journalist obviously he developed other musical tastes. He is a huge fan of the Smiths. I think you're just bigging him up because of his funkyness Si. Seriously though, I can't see him championing the finer points of the Fascinators, but who knows.. Hey some 'All Singing All Dancing" is better than none. As most folk will probably be jollying it up NYE, the real debate (perhaps) will happen after his show. Lastly, not a huge fan of the guy personally, but good luck to him and I hope it goes well. Link to comment Social source share
