We used to have Soul nites at Rochdale Town Hall many moons ago a fantatic venue steeped in history,

it was rumoured that one Adolf Hitler wanted to take it down brick by brick and take it to Germany!( that was if he won the war )

It is still used for functions and has a fantastic maple dance floor..

Not on about Chambers Salmon( Chambers was underneath the town hall and circa 73 was used as a soul/ska venue, it was stopped being used as there was only one entrance/exit health and safety problems, no alchohol, its currently being used for storage.)

I was talking about the main hall, huge dance floor, very ornate with stained glass windows and old oil paintings everywhere, if memory serves me right we had a few soul nights there cant remember off the top of my head who promoted it I think it was John Grant early eighties,

Does anybody else on here remember it Col Taylor perhaps, I remember going with Chris Barker R.I.P

but senile dementia has set in

Hi Stevie,

Your almost right on the Hitler information he did identify Rochdale Town Hall as a site to preserve but he actually was only interested in the stained glass windows not the overall building.

Sorry , back to the soul.

Vernons soul stag do. Shit spin attempt in the street even by my standards. Good line about shit promoter/band not coming.

Mel Torme - Coming home baby

Billy Butler - Right track

Al Wilson - The Snake

Stevie Wonder - Nothings too good for my baby

Every time you turn the telly on its Northern bloody Soul.

As Henry Lumpkin predicted 'Soul is taking over'

Its about time it went underground again, or we will end up with another revival.:shades::thumbup:

Merry Xmas

PS, cant wait to hear the tunes selected for Verns reception. Walking down a one way (Coronation) street.

I agree Northern Soul was at its best underground yes.gif

I reckon Vernon must have been at Brighouse last night as folk queued around the block to get in - its about 3 years ago since I saw a queue at Brighouse - I bet Vernon's a right mover out on the floor he may be better saving himself for "The World NS Dance Competitiion at Blackpool" :D

Merry Christmas everyone laugh.gif

When Liz McDonald hears how good Rochdale was I bet she wants a slice of the action, tries her hand at promoting and starts a night in Weatherfield same night and music policy as Rochdale

Did anyone see the episode where Vernon was sitting in his car 'drumming' on the steering wheel to wendy rene's bar b q?

This from the corrie blog from a few weeks back...

Derek the (married) drayman asks Liz out on a date. As Vernon's took himself off to the Rochdale Northern Soul Record Collective, Liz is alone and abandoned so takes Derek up on his offer. When Derek comes back to collect Liz, Vernon's returned from his jaunt: "Who needs Northern Soul when I've got Northern heart?" he smooches to Liz, which probably meant that the do had been cancelled. Derek's face drops, almost as much as Liz's cleavage has done, when he realises his date with Liz is off. Never mind, he can go home to his wife and cheer her up instead, perhaps he can ask her why she doesn't understand him.

Still have to look away at the sight of fizz in her parka or on that god awful twist n go!
