hehe "The Vinyl Countdown" ... thanks, now i cant get that really annoying synth run out of my head.

Good article tho. you know, the shops up here are the complete opposite of some listed here. Here in Seattle, the shop owners are very hip to ebay and will refuse to sell you a record if they plan on putting it on the bay for fear that they wouldnt make as much selling to someone walking in that they would online. It can get real annoying when you find something in a local shop that you are willing to drop the money on and the owner looks it up in manship and then lets you know that "he doesnt think he could sell it" and you see it online the following week.

Whats the point in having a shop then really?

Also, ive been going to one shop up here every weekend for a year, and the guy is sitting on a ton of 45s but he wont even let me look at them for fear i find something "big" before he can price them or put them up for auction.

ive got the money, im there to spend it! what gives?!

L.a.'s got the same plight....

Here's a recent article summing it up, w/ some thoughts from yours truly...

I had the same experience a few times this year...practice like this can be really frustrating, I agree. I looks like some people run record shops nowadays just waiting for some ignorant soul to walk in and SELL records, not to BUY them...believe me, I know a few blokes who will admit they do....

Although there are still the real passionate sellers with enough pride and honesty to run their stores like it should be done.

One truely admirable shop I can advise is located in Paris;

OLDIES BUT GOODIES

7, Rue Filles du Calvaire - 75003

Paris

the guy behind the counter may be old and grumpy at times but at least he's helpful and has the goodies....

last time I've checked he brought out hundreds and hundreds of minty 45's....all for 5 eur each! I found stuff like Dukays, The Ikettes, Hank Marr rarities et al

good records at fair prices

and a great selection to choose from. And all this without the paranoia of greedy sellers and without the net and price books.

We need more shops like this imo

The shop in Norwich had a Rocksteady 45 on Caltone on his wall @ £60.....he got no takers, he then decided to put it on ebay....you guessed it, he got £125!

Couldn't agree more Ken. Last time I called in there were already two other Soulies there, and another turned up whilst we were chatting. Max made everyone a coffee, and then we all stood outside for a smoke and a chat. You don't get that sort of service in any other type of shop.

Our local record shop closed last year and for years we collected b4 cd and

ordered cds when they where required.

sad to say the internet and downloading have killed of the independent forever.

especially in the outback

City centre or off centre sites may stay

but fewer and fewer.

shame

They might be closing we have to try and support the ones that are still around and to me it's not about just a shop for soul music but i think it's about a general music shop because if you know that they sell say dance, pop, rock, metal, punk, indie, easy listning, country, jazz, world, reggae, rock 'n' roll, soul, northern etc why worry at least they can have Northern soul for us to browse.

The ethics of the record shop and the steely backbone that they gave to many a scene have sadly gone, don't lament it, there's no helping to be done anymore.

As they said "Punks dead (but we're still dying)!"...no, it's definately dead and so are record shops.

Nowadays, musically, It's just a free for all, winner takes all...!

That particular technology based outcome - the death of the record shop that is - has brought about a musically direction free society for me - seeds were sown there, ideas were bounced about, opinions were swapped with people who cared enough and weren't scared enough to go through the initiation process - those who know what I'm talking about will know.

Shame.

But there's always the message boards ay!?

The reason why Rob arrives late at venues , is that he drives at a speed akin to a kerb crawler :D ......
