Wow BettyBrooks - Funky Funky just went for £480 pounds!! on JMs!

My question is, what fools are paying this sort of money. Steve Thomas broke the tune about 3/4 years ago, it got hammered and that was that....sold mine for £130.

Same with Lenny Williams - I couldn,t Find Nobody, apparently it sold for £700 on Manships...Again, sold mine for £150 (more than its worth! )

Are these people who dont get out and only shop on JM's site? Or millionaires who dont care about hiking ALL the prices up?

Just a couple facts, no offence intended

Firstly it Betty Brooks not Harris

Second; Steve Thomas's copy of Betty Brooks - came from me, he bought it 08/06/04 and paid a small fraction of what it sold for last night.

The guy who won it last night (a top DJ) and the other bidders I know and respect. And we were expecting £100-ish for it. So they went way over the top, does that make them mad, i don't think so.

Wouldn't you consider it far more "mad" to watch Chubby Checker or Changing Scene selling in front of you in £400's and not bid?

The copy of Lenny Williams on auction sold for £421 not £700 (again the winner not a fool but a top DJ)

Why wasn't there a thread of "MANSHIP'S MAD" when Steve Thomas bought his copy of Betty Brooks @ £25 or £50 or whatever i listed it at..

John, Im in no way saying you are mad mate! All you do is sell them, its up to people what THEY pay. Im just trying to get my head around the prices that some people pay on records, that to me , are easy enough to find! Or Not Rare.

Sorry about the Lenny Williams, that must be an urban myth thats circulating. BUT, I dont feel you should take it as an insult when I question WHY buyers are pushing prices up to ridiculous levels! I was asking a general question, not having a dig! Also, I NEVER see some of these so called TOP DJ's looking through sales boxes, certainly not mine. Where things like Betty and Lenny and Sity and James and more, lingered for a LONG time........It just seems that sometimes they are fed by your site (not your problem or fault) rather than their own curiosity. Just an observation.

Wasn't taking it as an insult mate, it puzzles me why there are not more collectors saying the opposite and talking about "Chubby Checker, Changing Scene etc etc were less than 1/2 price on finishing bids"

I know what your saying, because sometimes we are also shocked at the prices achieved.. or equally shocked at the under achieving titles also.

There are few SAFE predictions on the scene now. And, yes, i have been shocked by tunes that go too cheaply aswell.

If the buyer bought it for the instro flip he messed up, that backing track was used on several 45's and there's a far better version by Zuma on Maridene

AND THE 2 VERSIONS ON LE CAM BY BERRY STREET STATION, AND THE VOCAL "RUBY "ON STONE AIN,T BAD EITHER

Ey up Paul/John how's it going?

Decided to join this thread because twas I who relieved you of your Lenny Williams (at Sheridans I believe?) for 150 quid and am not tempted to sell despite the current level of interest. What's it really worth? - no point going there obviously because we all know its demand-driven. I was equally surprised (and pissed) that Chubby escaped me for lass than half the recognised market value, although I did manage to get one soon after on eBay for less than that off a bloke who had it described as "early rock".

Conclusion - there are plenty of buyers who, if they happen to be cashed up at the time (or all the time) are prepared to totally disregard market levels to get what they want. Same reason why shite paintings go for squillions at Sothebys.

Its all a good crack though eh?

Cheers...........Pete

IMHO WE ALL MUST BE MAD TO A CERTAIN DEGREE TO DJ OR BUY THESE RECORD ANYWAY. JUST BECAUSE A TOP DJ PAYS AGAIN IMHO OVER THE ODDS TO GET CERTAIN 45'S IN THEIR BOXES DOESNT MAKE THEM ANYMORE INSANE THAN THE REST OF US :unsure: .

Hi Paul, couldn't agree more, i have many mailing lists sent to me, plus i also use the internet, and the times i see records getting bidded on and won via various auction sites and the prices they go for amazes me, because i have many a time found the self same record (condition aswell) at a vastly lower price. I guess some people are either lazy or really have not given the time and thought to producing a network for their buying needs.
