Guest Posted March 16, 2005 Posted March 16, 2005 Has anyone got the TOTP footage of Wigan's Chosen Few on video or know the identity of the dancers and what happened to them
Paul R Posted March 16, 2005 Posted March 16, 2005 "Kipper" Rimmer from Newton Le Willows and Anne Rogers from Standish/Shevington, were difinitely in it. There were some "auditions on one of the weekday sessions at the Casino, I think it was on a Wednesday night. Little did anyone know what an attrocity it would become. After Tony Blackburn on TOTP introduced them "performing a new dance called the Footsee" many of the dancers stayed away from the allnighters.
Pete S Posted March 16, 2005 Posted March 16, 2005 As far as I know, nobody has that footage and when the BBC ran all their TOTP's in 93-95 on UK Gold, that one never aired. Jethro and a couple of the Dudley lads were on it I think.
Guest nubes Posted March 16, 2005 Posted March 16, 2005 Yeh Jethro was also on it for certain. link I heard that the BBC disposed of all the footage, bit sad really when one thinks that this was the first exposure of Northern soul dancing outsides the confines of the soul scene, i am not saying tthis was right, so put your guns down ok. just that it gave an insight to an alternative world during the mid70s and turned this then starry eyed teenager into a northern soul die hard. Del x link At the time it aired, I was an apprentice at Southport, but had to go to Liverpool once a week for day release. There were some scouse lunatics around at Tech and when the lads on my course told one of the maniacs that I could do the Footsee, he insisted that I did it. I didn't loose my bottle though, I was not going to degrade myself without the aid of pharmaceuticals for any scouse inbred! and I didn't get a pasting . The fact that it was also a Monday, so I was probably on a major downer didn't help though. Paul
Guest ShaneH Posted March 16, 2005 Posted March 16, 2005 If I am right there was a time when the BBC re-used a lot of the archives. In other words re-cycled the tape. I may be wrong but lots of TV gems went this way including John Lennon on Michael Parkinson. Was it something to do with the belief that the 'tape' would age and be rendered useless eventually hence the recylcing. Perhaps someone give the facts on here as my memory isnt what it was. Shane
Billywhizz Posted March 16, 2005 Posted March 16, 2005 Yeh Jethro was also on it for certain. link Also Dave Goldworths knowing as Goldie spoke to him at the Marrs last year. Billy

Paul link No, magnetic tape became very expensive in the early 70's so they started a procedure of wiping of practically all entertainment programs which they deemed wouldn't have been of historical value. For instance, I have a reel to reel recording of a Top Of The Pops from 1967 which my ex wife did as a child, it features Pink Floyd doing See Emily Play, this doesn't exist anywhere at the BBC. Almost all of the 60's and early 70's top of the pops have gone forever.

Paul R Posted March 17, 2005 Posted March 17, 2005 AYYYLAD WHOAYEWCALLINANINBREDDD link Sorry, but at Clarence St Tech there were a fair share of knuckledraggers and for a Southport Woollyback it could get a bit dangerous at times. Sorry for any offence to well adjusted individuals from the pool. Anyway, "Footsee Yeh, de de de de" etc
Iancsloft Posted March 17, 2005 Posted March 17, 2005 Tom Mercer from Hindley Green Wigan was also one of the dancers and has been in hiding ever since

I've got about 12 hours of old TOTP which I edited down from probably 50 episodes, mainly punk/new wave stuff 77-82, oh and The Tams doing Hey Girl Don't Bother Me when one of the members gets snatched off the stage half way through for forgetting what he's supposed to be doing

Mike Posted March 17, 2005 Posted March 17, 2005 When 'Love On a Mountain Top' was in the charts didn't the TOTP footage show Robert Knight at Wigan ? Guest Posted March 17, 2005 Posted March 17, 2005 have a dodgy memory of it being a film of him messing around some white building on a mountain compete with a fountain link No, included scenes from what appeared to be a live gig, with crowd scenes, I think in black and white. Thats why I wondered if it was shot at Wigan. But if PeteS says no, I must be wrong.

Godzilla Posted March 17, 2005 Posted March 17, 2005 (edited) My mum bought me a "Star Jumper" after seeing Wigan's Ovation on TOTP saying "this is what they all wear at that place you go to isn't it?". Managed to swop it for a barathea blazer thank God! Godz Edited March 17, 2005 by Godzilla

Simon T Posted March 17, 2005 Posted March 17, 2005 dodgy memory but reckon some substance in it , Apparently is the 'substance' that makes your memory dodgy! Talking of dancers, in every documentry that's about Northern, there's always a clip from Wigan of a black lad dancing (yellow top, black bags & thin white belt) any one know who he is?
Guest nubes Posted March 17, 2005 Posted March 17, 2005 ============ what happened to the girl in the laundry form this england??? link ==== All i know Mark, that her name was Christine and she was from Leigh,Manchester.I remember watching her when i first started going to Wigan, she was a awesome dancer,i still remember watching her dance : to Ten Miles High absolutely magic, Del xx

Guest Soulboychester Posted March 19, 2005 Posted March 19, 2005 Has anyone got the TOTP footage of Wigan's Chosen Few on video or know the identity of the dancers and what happened to them link I am sure a clip of Footsee was used on "Never Mind The Buzzcoks" guess who they are in the "line up" section, it was on about 6 months ago - so I'm sure there will be something floating around. Have read that the longterm goals of the BBC (apart from making shit tv) is to make available all airings of comedy, music, drama programmes either through internet or on demand tv whenever the technology is relevant - when this happens remains to be seen
Guest Posted March 31, 2005 Posted March 31, 2005 The promo for love on a mountain top was broadcast on Sky about 4 years ago on the now defunk RTL (Irish TV) Channel on a show called Larry Gogan's hour. It featured an eclectic mix of music videos and performances one of which was 'Love on a mountain top'. I taped this and adjusted the low volume (due probably the the price paid for airtime). So I now have a perfect copy in sound and vision. It does indeed feature Robert Knight walking around a hill, fountain and other various places with his other half. As for Footsee and all other TOTP related Northern Soul clips, the TOTP site provides eevry track ever boradcast on their database and whether or not they still have the footage. the answer from their database on Footsee is no, not in their archives.
