Dodgy also cover I'm on my way which came out as a bside.
Guest Posted December 14, 2007 Posted December 14, 2007 Yes most are just sightings on a night out but Shane, Sean, Steve Davis, some of Primal Scream, Paul Weller and a couple of others are big Northern / soul fans. Armchair fans

Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted December 14, 2007 Posted December 14, 2007 The chap who plays (or maybe played, if he's not in it anymore) 'Bob Hope' in 'Emmerdale' is known to collect, and goes to dances. I saw him at the Jackie Ross/Syl Johnson show in Wakefield a couple of years back so I can back his claims up with personal evidence! Away from soul, the former Cricketer Derek Pringle has a vast reggae collection. I often bumped into him in shops like "Reggae Revive" in the early 90s, buying obscure mid 70s roots tunes...
Ady Croasdell Posted December 14, 2007 Posted December 14, 2007 Steve Furst aka Lenny Beige one of the support actors in Little Britain and the gingerish geezer in the Orange ads has been a regular for years.
Guest in town Mikey Posted December 14, 2007 Posted December 14, 2007 Not trying to be funny, but how many of these bods that 'popped in' were genuine afficiandos? And how many were just there for a late drink or to see what all the fuss is about? For example I am reliably informed by someone who knows her that Anna Ford was never into northern, despite being "photo'd" in The Casino. Same thing with Freddie Starr I think. All these indie / punk band members though? As an aside I was watching a programme on London last night in the "ITV versus Eastenders" slot and that horrible weird geek that does the tax adverts was warbling on about the 100 Club. Mentioned it's jazz routes and it then having a new lease of life for punk / indie. No mention of it holding northern nights for nearly 30 years typical! That a pertenent point. Dale Winton was asked by a tabloid, in one of those 20 questions things What is your most prized possesion? He answered his collection of Northern Soul originals. Its a pity he only (seemed to) came along to some of the Rocket allniters. I'm sure he'd have enjoyed all of the other night London was offereing at that time. Who is the guy out of the Orange adverts, and some comedy shows? he was a regular at the 100 just as I was moving out of London. i bore evryone down here silly saying 'he's a good dancer you know. Used to sit on the stage at the 100 next to us.'

Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted December 14, 2007 Posted December 14, 2007 Nope Ken - Steve Davis has been to Yarmouth weekenders and also pitched up at the Smersh bar one night when I was on..... He also went to at least two early Alex Lowes weekenders that I can recall seeing him at, possibly more. Mind you, he didn't half take up a lot of room at the record bars with that armchair...
Guest Byrney Posted December 14, 2007 Posted December 14, 2007 I've seen Steve out in the late eighties/early nineties.....didn't he used to part own a record shop in manchester at one time? Think he's been into for years; used to see him at Thorne late 80s
Guest highlander Posted December 14, 2007 Posted December 14, 2007 The film maker and record producer Ian levine was a big fan until 1975
Cheapsiderecords Posted December 14, 2007 Posted December 14, 2007 Steve Davis also had an interest in the Mag Voices From The Shadows, in fact I believe he saved it from going under. Rod, about time you resurrected this mag!!!
Barry Posted December 15, 2007 Posted December 15, 2007 Corinne Drewery of 'Swing Out Sister' - Real NS girl. I don't think that you can write Anna Ford off as 'someone who was filming'. And Steve Davis, given his wedge, turned a lot of it over to buying Real Soul Music...so don't have a pop just cos he wasn't off his tits on the dancefloor at your local niter - it is about You and not what you want to purvey to others, after all (As Big Sam once said). Kevin Rowland, I feel also it meant a lot to. An amount of the posts I have read seem to be posts about famous people that have just recognised Northern - they don't really count - They don't - I bought a Culture Club record once , but I don't really hope that because of that I will be held up on a CC message board as someone who was prevalent in keeping old BG in dresses. Is Stu Mc more true to NS tyhan KR because he has the option to spread the word over the Radio - I'm not sure. It's about how YOU see it, live with it...and ultimaltely use it to live your life. Nothing to do with your fame.
Barry Posted December 15, 2007 Posted December 15, 2007 PS 'Breaking Down The Walls Of Heartache' ...as someone who has released vinyl and sees that each release you make (each costing you money) has only two stabs at making it - to cover a Stone Cold Dancefloor Favourite like that....must have meant something. Big up KR!
Professorturnups Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 you mean...coronation street and emmerdale aren't real Wasn't Chris Waddle into Northern at one time? When Chris Waddle moved from Newcastle to Spurs he made the comment in a magazine that he was into N.Soul but wouldn't hear any in London! Les Ferdinand has quite a collection too, I've been tpld Mark C

Guest WPaulVanDyk Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 well Pete Waterman is a fan and everyone else you mention but you also forget Love Affair i believe fans well Steve Ellis anyway they recorded some covers of songs i believe one being 60 minutes of your love and suprised no one mentioned Edwyn Collins who had written A Girl Like you about Wigan Casino and something. He had a single out that had patches on as the cover
Barry Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 well Pete Waterman is a fan and everyone else you mention but you also forget Love Affair i believe fans well Steve Ellis anyway they recorded some covers of songs i believe one being 60 minutes of your love and suprised no one mentioned Edwyn Collins who had written A Girl Like you about Wigan Casino and something. He had a single out that had patches on as the cover I know Pete and worked for him for 8 years but I must tell you that he he gets trolleyed out on TV shows regarding Northern and Motown every time... He knows FA. And I know he won't mind me saying that.
Barry Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 Edwyn Collins out Winehoused 'Winehouse' by ten years - a great production.
Steve G Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 well Pete Waterman is a fan In the 70s he ran a mobile round the Coventry area playing soul, wrote a few articles about the (then new) Philly Sound, and then popped up in a documentary a few years ago about NS talking about miners holding hands as they danced at Wigan - must confess I never saw that going on . This to me makes him a one time fan. Of course I don't know what he has in his living room by the record player, and it may well be some soulful delights......but these days Pete is more interested in model railways, and runs a company that makes them. I am sure some of those lads on the northern railways circuit could fill in the blanks - Steve M, Sean etc?
BrianB Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 I might need some help on this, but I remember seeing an article somewhere, about a top flight goalkeeper, (Might have been with Forest?). He was photographed with his wife and a collection of 45s and LPs. All of them Motown or Northern. Anyone else remember?
Guest martyn Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 (edited) It doesn't really surprise me Malc as I doubt that Ms Jones herself attaches a lot of importance to her Uptown recordings. Some of these artists can't even remember cutting these tracks or are even a little dismissive of them. A good example is Garnett Mimms in TSWONS, 'it was one of those Ragavoy things' & even Marvin Gaye, who apparently didn't want to spend the rest of his life 'shaking his ass', looking for witnesses. When you're Marvin Gaye & have something to say, I can sort of understand that. But then again, it has to be said that these two were established artists & not also rans. If I'm not wrong, Bolan was a mod who later took too much acid got consumed by all that wizards, elves & goblins crap. The night Gloria appeared at St.Ives I didn't go & Bolan was rumoured to have played drums, but I think it's only a rumour. Can anyone confirm that? Not true mate,he just stood at the stage side & watched.Gonzalez were her backing band..........Thats if it was him at all ,at the time I thought it was just some weird roadie stood there until a mate told me it was in fact Bolan Edited December 17, 2007 by martyn
Modernsoulsucks Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 it was "Bonehead", the drummer from Oasis who bought NS 45s. Didn't have a clue who he was until someone told me. Also the lead singer with B52's collects. He spent quite a bit on cheapies one dull afternoon ROD
Crumb Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 Edwyn Collins who had written A Girl Like you about Wigan Casino and something. He had a single out that had patches on as the cover He covered Psychadelic Soul, didn't do too bad a job of it either from what I can remember

Big up KR! He's been down to NS do's in Brighton a few times, never stays that long though, maybe our dos are cr*p! Think he quite likes the music, he asked me to play The Elgins - 'Heaven must have sent you' at one Do, think i remember him saying it was his fave track. Simon P.S. We had Patsy Palmer in at a do in the Hanbury in Brighton a couple of years back, she only stayed half an hour though!
Guest Simon Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Love Affair i believe fans well Steve Ellis anyway they recorded some covers of songs i believe one being 60 minutes of your love and suprised no one mentioned I know Steve (fellow Brightonian) very well, he doesn't go to NS dos but does like 6ts Soul music pretty much across the board, he spends a lot of his time recording still, really nice chap. 22ndsoul Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 Saw a load of corrie cast at Brighouse three or four years ago including Peter Barlow.
Guest JJMMWGDuPree Posted December 21, 2007 Posted December 21, 2007 In this months Q magazine the lead singer states that the NS compilation LP "Out on the floor" as being his all time favourite LP as "Northern Soul might have some sad lyrics but it's inspiring and uplifting music that lefts me evertime" (I'm paraphrasing here). The lead singer of what? I think we should be told...
Guest bazabod_downunder Posted December 23, 2007 Posted December 23, 2007 isnt this meant to be real people, not characters in soapland Aren't they real people?....I'm shocked.....does this mean they are all Soap Box Soulies? I once read an article that the late Ian Curtis of manchester band Joy Division was a fan, 'apparently' the track on the Still LP called The Kill is their version of Keep On Keeping On by NF Porter....its sounds f#*k all like it. As for Paul Daniels being a fan.....he's reportedly been heard telling his wife 'You'll like this, but not a lot' KTF Baz
Soul Shrews Posted December 23, 2007 Posted December 23, 2007 (edited) Been on here before bazabod-downunder, Richard Searling and John Anderson produced a Joy Division track using the bass line from "Keep On Keepin' On" don't remember the name of the Joy Division track tho Cheers Paul Edited December 23, 2007 by soul shrews
Guest bazabod_downunder Posted December 24, 2007 Posted December 24, 2007 Dunno about it being on here before, but 'The Kill' (keep on keeping on, hybrid version) was produced by Martin Hannet & as Ian Curtis died in May 1980 with the album being released very soon thereafter I would think it very unlikely that RS had anyting to do with it.....unless of course this was way after Ian Curtis hung himself on 'yet another' Joy Division 'Let's make money out of him 'cause he's dead' album. KTF Baz
Guest JoeMoran Posted December 24, 2007 Posted December 24, 2007 Bronagh Gallagher (The Commitments, Star wars TPM, Pulp Fiction) is very much into Soul Music and was a regular at the irish soul clubs some years back - Remember Rob Thomas and his crew getting loads of photos taken with her when they met her. Havent seen her about in years though....
ImberBoy Posted December 24, 2007 Posted December 24, 2007 I was at the Casino with Steven Hawkin when he dived over the balcony.
