Not forgetting our own Stuart Cosgrove (Director of Programmes Ch4).

Saw Budgie at a King Georges Hall night in Blackburn a couple of years ago wearing the same leopard skin 3 peice suit. Had a chat with him about his time at the Wolves, decent bloke. After a few pints his 3 peice became a one peice and he was dancin around like a loon in just the trousers.

Not this thread again;

Bill Oddie was a real blues fan ,and was one of the first 100 members of the first Twisted Wheel in Manchester (whilst at uni there)

Fizz out of Coronation St. wears clothes provided by the props dept,(hence the Wigan badges)--Curly Watts WORE THEM ON THE SHOW MANY YEARS AGO!

Craig Charles who plays the taxi driver is a huge fan and really into Maxine Brown and Barbara Lynn

Dale Winton has always admitted he loves Northern

The guy who lpayed the Tall chap in the play-"Once upon a time in Wigan"(first version b4 they changed actors) saw him at the Wheel about 4 yrs ago --had a good natter.

Eric Knowles-the Antique bod --spoke about collecting Northern Soul on telly many times

Judy Finnegan(wher,s me bra gone!!) said she first saw Rod Stewart live at the Twisted Wheel b4 he was famous--so maybe??

Famous Scottish soccer pundit Stuart Cosgrove was an ex-staff writer for Black Echoes and regularly does radio shows

Anna Ford ONLY attended the Casino once as a 17 yr old trainnee journo for the Manchester Evening News and said she did not see what all the fuss was about.

Alan Hansen has a fair Motown and Deep soul collection,Ex-Coventry City star -Mickey Ginn has a superb 70s 80,s collection of imports and is good buddies with Solar Radio,s Shaun Robbins

Ex Bradford Bulls Player Paul Medley has had many Northern and Crossover cassettes done by me

Mark Lamarr--good across the board taste in 50,s60,s but has a liking for Northern

Can.t remember anymore --off the top of my head!!

WHEN I LIVED IN SOUTHAMPTON, MUCH TRAVELED GOALKEEPER JOHN BURRIDGE USED TO TURN UP REGULARLY AT LOCAL SOUL NITES

He was my partner for a while, complete nut case! As well as leopard skin suit he also had a black leather 'Right Said Fred' ensemble and a yellow Showaddywaddy number! So's not to draw attention to himself

In March 2003 I was part of a massive push with US and British forces as we moved in on Iraq's second-largest city Basra.

After days of heavy fighting and some of the most exiting times of my life we broke through and I found my self, along with many others, fortifying The Basra Palace for use as a head quarters.

For a while we all went a bit "mental chicken oriental" smashing the place up like mad men but after a short time we calmed down and took a real look at the Palace.

In one of the bed rooms I found at least three hundred records from Motown to Atlantic and on close inspection I saw Stormy by the Supremes on Whitestorm and the M.V.P's Turning my heartbeat up!

I tried to find out who's records these belonged to and the word on the street was that they belonged to Uday Hussein who is Saddam Hussein's eldest son and a Northernsoul fanatic due to his university time in England.

I asked if I could keep some of the records but it was very much frowned upon to take any thing as we where losing the PR battle and no one wanted to be accused of looting.

was there a drifters ive got sand in my shoes??? on atlantic.

Yes, marc Almond. I knew him before he did tainted love, as he was actually the cloakroom attendant at 'The Leeds Warehouse', he WAS into the Northern tunes. Also can't believe that no one has mentioned Tony Blackburn (big fan of anything black music orientated) and used to do a wicked show on 'Real' radio in Leeds. Marc Bolan MUST have been a fan being married to Gloria Jones.

Saw Sham 69's Jimmy Pursey in Hanley cop shop once & he claimed he'd been to Wigan, don't think he was very impressed though.

Thats probable. He went to Woking Centre Halls mid/late 70s.

I met him a couple of times & he was a solid bloke.

Quite a few people from Woking made the trip to Wigan.

Paul Weller also lived in Woking.

My mate Dave Grigglestone was always popping round his house for this n that.

I couldn't see what all the fuss was about.

Just dug this out, it is an Iraqi musician called Ilham Al Madfai, you can see him here singing The Drifter "Ray Pollard". Obviously the lyrics are all in Arabic and the sound has been changed ever so slightly but for those with even the basics of the Shi'ite dialect can hear the distinct "Drifter", for those who can't, well you'll just have to take my word for it as I would never lie to you.

If he had been , it certainly did not influence his musical output from the time of being married to her .....

MB covering " Come Go With Me " or " Tainted Love " ......

That I would have like to have heard .....

It doesn't really surprise me Malc as I doubt that Ms Jones herself attaches a lot of importance to her Uptown recordings.

Some of these artists can't even remember cutting these tracks or are even a little dismissive of them. A good example is Garnett Mimms in TSWONS, 'it was one of those Ragavoy things'

& even Marvin Gaye, who apparently didn't want to spend the rest of his life 'shaking his ass', looking for witnesses.

When you're Marvin Gaye & have something to say, I can sort of understand that.

But then again, it has to be said that these two were established artists & not also rans.

If I'm not wrong, Bolan was a mod who later took too much acid got consumed by all that wizards, elves & goblins crap. The night Gloria appeared at St.Ives I didn't go & Bolan was rumoured to have played drums, but I think it's only a rumour. Can anyone confirm that?

Correct ....

Marc Feld ( he became Bolan in 1967 ) flirted with being a mod around 1964 , but changed his " image " shortly after that , to emulate the look of such singers as Bob Dylan and Donovan were sporting around that period ......

I think that's doing him a disservice. Marc Feld was a Mod long before it became a mainstream thing. There's an article written in 1962 (he would be about 15) published in "Town" magazine where he and a couple of fellow modernists are interviewed about sartorial matters. He expresses concern that the movement was beginning to reach the high street and that people that had previously ridiculed his look were beginning to dress like him. By 63-64 he'd long stopped being a Mod and was pursuing a musical career.

Please accept my apologies , as it was not intended to do MB a disservice ....

Following your reply / comments , I have read my original posting again , and found that I omitted a word , which , if I had been more careful when typing , would have more sense of the context of / for my statement .....

What I should have typed was " flirted with being a mod until around 1964 " ......

There are likely to be more names than have been mentioned , but they will probably not admit to it , in case it harms their credibility .......

Look what happened to Sean Hampsey , Steve Mannion and myself when we did  .......

Shane McGowan was the 100 Club cloakroom attendant and loved the music and came to dos regularly. Same with the Alarm and trash group the Stingrays. Tony Smith saw a Sex Pistol, Roisin Murphy comes down occasionally and Kenny were big in the 70s.

Didn't the Gallagher Brothers (Noel & Liam), attend on a couple of occassions, circa '93!?!

Wouldn't have spoken to him anyway.......I'd rather go rabbit hunting with Elmer Fudd than spend time with him.

I've met him a few times, a spot on fellah IMO.

He's also Djing with Eddie Pillar at festival in Summer playing Northern

Smith saw a Sex Pistol

Actually there were 2, Cook & Jones plus they had "Helen of

Troy" with them, also down the 100 I had Charlie Harper of the UK Subs cornered at the bar, Buzzcocks have been and back in the 80's, Wham + entourage turned up squirting water pistols, blowing whistles + George M challenging Keb to a dance off, shortly before he was kicked out, good days

Jon Moss, later of Culture Club, was a frequent attendee in the early days. Used to come to West Hampstead, was at that niter on the other side of Oxford St (after the New Romantic evening bash, remember that?) and propped the bar up with Shane at 100 Club.(He was drummer for Nips for a while around that time too). He loved the music & vibe, with his initiation being W.Hampstead, totally understandable!

Sean Ryder of Happy Mondays was into Northern and a programme about him last year had Northern being played in the background. Also does anyone know if Joy Division had any links to the scene I know Richard Searling was involved with them and they used the guitar riff from Keep on Keeping on on an early track.

John Budgie Burridge used to frequent Blackpool Mecca in the early 70's and I have seen him at Blackburn and Lowton last year. He does not drink and never has done but he really is still a lunatic and has bizarre dress sense now.

I thought it was Karl somebody from the Fall, who used to go?

"Marc's record collection was eclectic to say the least. Although well acquainted with the swirling vortex of faceless artists who found unlikely success on the dancefloors of Wigan Casino, Blackpool Mecca & the Torch in Stoke On Trent, Northern soul failed to permeate his collection"

That's a good one I would have bored people with if I could have remembered it, he must have been with those prats who came down from the Dirtbox. Who threw him out?

Sean McCluskey from the Joboxers was a 100 Club regular and DJed there too.

Not trying to be funny, but how many of these bods that 'popped in' were genuine afficiandos? And how many were just there for a late drink or to see what all the fuss is about?

For example I am reliably informed by someone who knows her that Anna Ford was never into northern, despite being "photo'd" in The Casino. Same thing with Freddie Starr I think.

All these indie / punk band members though?

As an aside I was watching a programme on London last night in the "ITV versus Eastenders" slot and that horrible weird geek that does the tax adverts was warbling on about the 100 Club. Mentioned it's jazz routes and it then having a new lease of life for punk / indie. No mention of it holding northern nights for nearly 30 years  typical!

Yes most are just sightings on a night out but Shane, Sean, Steve Davis, some of Primal Scream, Paul Weller and a couple of others are big Northern / soul fans.
