Wah wow doo doop be ddopy dooh diddle whoo whooo whooooooo eeee they don't write lyrics like that any more!

Here's the question, in my hand I have a single by Second City Sound, on the "B" side is "The Dream of Olwyn" and on the A side is A Touch Of Velvet & Sting Of Brass, but what was played on the Northernsoul scene? Mood Mosaic or Second City Sound??

I know one version was played at the Wheel in 1967 and it was also a Wigan Casino sound. I must admit that it is one of my all time favorites and I never get tired of hearing its haunting melancholy tune, I love it.

A Touch Of Velvet & Sting Of Brass - Second City Sound

Mood Mosaic - A Touch Of Velvet A Sting Of Brass

Mods, please don't freekin move this just coz it has a media clip on.......

Hi to every one I met at Blackpool and hi to every one I met at Middleton and mods please don't move this coz I mentioned a venue.

Can't answer your question as i only know it by Mood Mosaic,

But nice memories of getting ready for school every morning with it on the 'wireless' as Tony Blackburns theme tune on radio 1 biggrin.gif

Dave was the Tony thing Mood Mosaic?

No, some 60's pop instrumental. Pete Smith is your man he just seems to know these things.

I was to young for this when it was first played, but as I remeber it, it was the Mood Mosaic version first played. But then some peeps realised there was the other version and it was easier to get, so it was played as well.

Wasn't some kind of ultra fast horn instrumental where he used to intersperse a couple of 'woofs' from his dog Arnold LOL....... biggrin.gif

Well its not often i'm right and i'm wrong again it seems, and it means i've got it wrong for nearly 40 yrs, shattered now sad.gif

Can't believe I'm doing this at 11.17pm on a sunday but........

BEEFEATERS - Johnny Dankworth and his Orchestra Fontana H512 (1964) / Fontana TF 267395 (re-issue). The version used by Blackburn was slowed down to include a dubbed Arnold the dog. The track was also the theme tune of Redifussion TV's Search for a Star

DAVE LEE TRAVIS (Caroline North & South)A TOUCH OF VELVET, A STING OF BRASS - Mood Mosaic Columbia DB7801 (April 1966) "Mood Mosaic" was actually writer, producer and Orchestra leader Mark Wirtz, who was responsible for Keith West's 1967 hit "Excerpt from a Teenage Opera

In fact there a whole site just about DJ theme tunes see link, how sad is this

MOOD MOSAIC "A Touch Of Velvet, A Sting Of Brass" (one time Dave Lee Travis Radio Caroline Theme tune, and also the theme from Germany's "Beat Club" TV show)

Dave Lee Travis "DLT," as he was known, joined Caroline South in September 1965 where he took over the Lunchtime Show and became "your dinner spinner." His show started with the sound of Big Ben chiming followed by A Touch Of Velvet, A Sting Of Brass by Mood Mosaic.

Still need to know were "Second city sound" fits in?

PS those were the days Radio 1 playing northern soul. Stuart Henry, used to feature a tune a day at lunch time. Remember dancing round the workshop one luch time when he played Al Wilson-Help me, when it came out on Disco Demand

And Emperor Rosko was good on Northern too. I saw him once @ Brighton Locarno when I was 17 on holiday and he played "I've Been Hurt" for me. I was dead impressed, mainly 'cos he turned up on his Harley Davidson with a blonde behind him, rode right through the venue, up a ramp to the stage, parked up, grabbed the mike and said "Brighton, Are You Ready To Rock!"

Great gig and not a bloody laptop in sight LOL...... laugh.gif

Theme Tune from The German TV

>>> BEAT CLUB <<<

on which Dave Lee Travis was one of the Hosts.

Somewhere between Show 8 & 45 If you click on the story part 2.

You can also listen to the Theme Tune. by Mood Mosaic, on the first page.

I have the Second City Sound on Major Minor

which was from a Bargain Bin outside a Shop in Doncaster.

They were Nearly all the Major Minor Label in the Bargain Bin.

& at the time in the 70's

I only Managed a Columbia Re-Issue of Mood Mosaic.

I'll have to dig my copies out for another listen.

Seem to remember 2, possibly 3 volumes of the Emporer Rosko Roadshow on Atlantic.

Usual Atlantic staples + Rosko intro's - or did i imagine this!

There's a third version of A Touch Of Velvet by Sounds Orchestral on Pye or Piccadilly.

I'm with you all in remembering it from the radio (I thought it was Radio Luxemburg!) but it was never a Wigan 'top' sound in the true sense of the word, it was played by Dave Evison in his oldies spot and got reactivated because of that and even bootlegged.

'The Penguin Breakdown' kin brilliant.............. my bessy mate plays this every time he phones me!!!! Luvs it

Simon,

See the avatar's not changed but like you said to me at Middleton it makes people stop you to ask if it's you, so you meet new people all the time, also it frightens old ladies & keeps kids away from open fires :sleep3: .

Sorry gone off at a tangent as usual, get your mate to play you the flip of "Penguin Breakdown" that just as good & the main reason I rang, t'was the "Mood Mosiac's" that I remember being played & seem to remember it played at Cleethorpes a lot, no doubt it will have originated from another venue but thats what I remember from early/mid 70's, which is quite good cos I can't remember much more from that decade  .Remember "Sounds Orchestra" version on Pye Int being issued but both other versions we're just copies IMVHO.

See you out & about but not Earl till next year, take care & be safe,

Spot. shades.gif

ps. Gail (wife) says thanks for the compliment (attractive lady stopped me on stairs & asked was I Imberboy?) in your last Earl of Donny comment.

Thanks mike, that clip is Mood Mosaic...... Can any one sling the two versions up on here so we can compare?

I have tried many times to force vinyl into my CD Rom tray but it always seams to snap!

Spot and Gail I will be at The Ritz Nighter on Saturday Night hope to see you there. Yours Imberboy and yes I am keeping the "Axe Murderer" picture lol.

Pete Smith, Pete can you help with the two music clips or even the three??

Just to add my 2 pen'th(or what ever!). It was definately DLT for Mood Mosaic. Also Stuart henry used the start of "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy"(A side of "Quitter") Williams & Watson as a type of Jingle.

OR was it Rosco?

Who was it that used "All For You" Earl Van Dyke? Possibly Johnnie Walker.

I have - writing credit is J. Ferdy.

The Mood Mosaic version is arranged and produced by Mark Wirtz.

Mark Wirtz - the man behind Excerpt from a Teenage Opera ("Grocer Jack" for those old enough to remember) credited to singer Keith West.

Wirtz was a bit of an oddball French pop genius and the whole Teenage Opera project was ditched by EMI. I think it was to do with budget constraints and the follow up single not doing as well as "Excerpt...".

Damn fantastic arranger in my book

I am really surprised that no one actually ever mixed all 3 versions subtly together at the height of Imber.

I always like mixing Jackie Edwards with Wynder K Frog or is it the other way round. Obviously less subtle inst into vocal. What a Mod Mosiac mix work on the 45?

What other subtle DJ mixes are out there?

I have a new Accountant just started working for me last week. Apparently grew up with Ian Levine.

Absolutely - did you ever hear "He's our dear old weatherman" by Mark Wirtz? Has all the grocer jack trademarks but a bit more of an edge to it as well as numerous weird special effects, a fabulous piece of late 60's psych/whimsy...
