Originally known as the no-hit Supremes because of a series of flops, they only made it big with the Holland-Dozier-Holland classic Where Did Our Love Go, after the Marvelettes' lead singer Gladys Horton dismissed the song as "garbage". It was the first of 12 number 1's, making the Supremes the top-selling band of the 1960's. Stone looks at how their success coincided with the civil rights movement and provided black American women with a new, positive image. 1 of 3 programmes
