Northern Soul Uk Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 (edited) Just pulled out and Ep compiled by 'Coldcut' and it has a track on by Otis Clay called 'The only way is up', It's a real modern Northern dancer, very Meccaesque, anyone know of it or anything about it? Just noticed that it is on Manship's list for $350 about £175ish. Must be reasonably obscure. Edited November 15, 2007 by steveluigi

Sean Hampsey Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 This great Otis Clay 45 was the biggest record on the scene, for about 3 months, circa 1982. Still a Top Choon! Sean

Sean Hampsey Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 Yes... and at Clifton Hall if I remember correctly!! Howard You do, Howard.... you do! Happy days... when quality New Release-Soul was played as a matter of course at a Northern AllNighter!
Northern Soul Uk Posted November 15, 2007 Author Posted November 15, 2007 (edited) IS THIS THE ONE---https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jwidh-uCiQYes that's the one, top tune even if Yazz did mess it up, why can't the be original insted of ripping off other peoples music, and that goes for most of the dance music scene today, not Northern though. There's no originality anymore, that's why Northern is so pure, all original. Edited November 15, 2007 by steveluigi
John Reed Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 Latimore did a great slowed down version on his Only Way Is Up Malaco LP from 91.
Simon T Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 This great Otis Clay 45 was the biggest record on the scene, for about 3 months, circa 1982. Still a Top Choon! Sean Didn't you used to introduce it as 'the main man from Chicago'? Was it only big for three month because they all wore out after half a dozen plays? Except for brand new copies, all the ones I've had cut up badly. Also, came out on an LP, slightly longer too.
Guest Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 Yazz and the platic population reached number 1 for 5 weeks in 1988 by destroying this classic. gary May not have been a very good version of the song but George Jackson who wrote it made a VERY tidy sum of money out of it so it ain't all bad. Derek

Derek Ironic that, in the sam,e way as we were talking about Tom Tom Washington a few weeks ago and how he made a lot out of Phil Collins. Every cloud etc.

I think I probably did, Simon. Still tend to announce records by Geography (even though he came from Mississippi - he was (and is) still a Chicago Soul Man to me). You're dead right on the dodgy styrene too! Still a quality item though, despite the hiss!

Not in the slightest obscure, massive record all the way through the 80's (Are you just being modest Mr Hampsey with your 3 months comment) great record. And yes the George Jackson version is equally renowned ampng the soul fans on here surely!
Barry Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 Pure Rotherham - mind the cue burn though, styrene. AAAAWESOME!!
Sean Hampsey Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 Not in the slightest obscure, massive record all the way through the 80's (Are you just being modest Mr Hampsey with your 3 months comment) great record. I'm sure you know how modest I am Jock! The flipside's not bad either (Special Kind Of Love). Brother Patrick prefered to play that side at Rotherham... until I told him I'd had it for years on UK President!
Barry Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 JJ Caillier Otis Clay Oscar Perry The Pockets Charles Johnson Machine Curtis ZZ & Co ...and then it was 8 o'clock with silver and copper in your pocket, a million miles from home but it didn't really matter (I love rose tinted specs). What was the cafe called with the juke box full of Northern that we used to go in following?

Think it would have been 81, Eddie, but you could be right. It was certainly at the time when the casino was on the way out and Rotherham was... very appropriately.... on the way up! Also, Top track Bobby King. Some luvverly stuff on that LP! A pity "If You Don't Want MY Love" never made it to a 45 though. Coulda been a monster! All the best brother Sean Edited November 16, 2007 by Sean Hampsey
