Guest Adam G Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 His version of "Old man river" is something else . Ive heard "What have I done" played at the Orwell and other venues it sounds awsome on a big system.
jocko Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Anyone got a copy of his No Girl for sale, havent really done the online searches for it so been lazy here and hoping to get it for a good price on here (remember I am a tight git! ) And slightly off topic anyone ever see the version by the Showmen these days, or even better have a sound clip of it. Not sure how rare this turned out to be, one of the many fine plays back in the day from the ever sauve Mr Dean Anderson!
KevH Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 the other side if "Summertime", "to love ,to love",is absolutley awesome,,,KEV.

Guest Mark Holmes Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 His version of Summertime is one of my all time favorites. Used to work with a woman here in the US whose oldest sister actually dated Billy back in the day.
Sunnysoul Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 Old timers tell me that Billy Stewart appeared at the Twisted Wheel on several occasions (before his tragic death in 1969) and he was a big big favourite with the Wheel crowd and the early soul scene.
Prophonics 2029 Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 I posted a track of his on hear a few weeks ago No Girl Chess.

Guest soulmaguk Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 Just pulled out "Sitting In The Park" and gave it a spin for the first time in years. Superb tune! Just my sitting in the park for a stinkin' fiver 'shit'.. only had a month.
Guest Pete Griffin Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 Look back and smile top tune https://www.soulclub.org/stream/Billy_Stewa...&_Smile.ram or type in Billy Stewart in soul club site.
Guest edsuede Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 His version of "Old man river" is something else . Ive heard "What have I done" played at the Orwell and other venues it sounds awsome on a big system. For me, it's the flip - 'Everyday I have the blues' - great intro and awesome vocals Really gets under your skin after a few plays
Guest soulmaguk Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 Just listening to Billy Stewart - Count Me Out. Check out a record by the The Commands - Hey It's Love if you can www.soulclub.org sounds like Billy Stewart to me.
Paul McKay Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 The instrumental "Scramble" is pretty good - well worth looking out for.
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 (edited) His version of Summertime is one of my all time favorites. Funny that - it's one of the worst records I've ever heard, little more a collection of vocal exercises that's completely devoid of any soul. I'd have to put it on a par with snother soul-less collection of vocal exercises, Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You"... Fortunately, it has a brilliant B side, and - apart from his other manglings of standards - just about all of Billy Stewart's records are absolutely magnificent. I particularly love "Strange Feeling" and "Reap What you Sow", but I'll happily listen to any of them except "Secret Love" and the godawful "Summertime"... Edited November 15, 2007 by TONY ROUNCE

I personally don't like summertime that much, but I think a large percentage of the American population would disagree with you, as it was his biggest hit, or at least is the one that still gets played on the radio, next to sitting in the park.
Guest Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 Just listening to Billy Stewart - Count Me Out. Check out a record by the The Commands - Hey It's Love if you can www.soulclub.org sounds like Billy Stewart to me. "Count Me Out" is a great one from him, IMO. Would like to hear it played in DDA room etc. Don't see it for sale very often, even though it won't be very expensive, its one of the harder Billy Stewarts to find!

jocko Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 Jock are you saying the Showmen did No girl? Yes, but not the main act Showmen that you are thinking of probably. I will try and find more info and post up. I bought the Biily Stewart off Ady Pierce and there are a couple still on Gemm.

Interesting comments Tony, Jackie Wilson was another soul man that delighted in performing vocal gymnastics throughout his delivery, and Minnie Ripperton of course in the 70's. I take it you're not a fan of that sort of thing, a performer showing off of their vocal range ?
